Yes and no. The Worldstone ties together all of the living things of Sanctuary because all of Sanctuary was created through it (it was stolen from the High Heavens at one point for this purpose.) Inarius then tainted it so that humans would become weak (he really just wanted them all dead), falling from their former lofty power seat of being Nephalem. It was then stopped by someone, I forget who. Now that it's destroyed, who knows what could happen to humans?
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the world stone to keep Demons out of Sanctuary? I don't think the Worldstone had anything to do with human strength.
it did back then humans/mortals were the Powerful Nephalem, both Angelic and Demonic but Inarius Their creator used the worldstone to prevent the next generation of the Nephalem from developing phenomenal power (the first one was deemed a failure by Inarius and he therefore wiped them out)
hope this helps

All I want is a confirmation... WTF is up with Tyrael?!?!?!?
I heard he has been corrupted, Yay or nay?
And with 20 years passing, where are the Mage Guilds???
In my opinion it's impossible Tyreal to be corrupted or stupid from blizz side to make him one in d3 because he is the only manifestation of light fighting with heart for the humans, he is the expression of pure good in human knowledge and imagination. He is the wise, powerfull, beautiful dust of light in the see of evil over humanity. Tyreal is the ancient arch-angel protector and only hope for salvation by his holy wisdom and power. Tyreal means Light !
I heard that the Blood Raven ist actually the Rogue from D1...is that right? And also that the Horazon is the mage from D1???
Is there an explanation for this, and maybe another curiosites?
I'm not sure if there are any official explanations, but it makes sense.. They all went to fight Diablo, but those 2 got corrupted and are in places where The Wanderer/Diablo travelled..

"And the Evil that was once vanquished shall rise anew! Wrapped in the guise of man shall he walk amongst the innocent, and terror shall consume they that dwell upon the earth! The sky shall rain fire, and the seas will become as blood! The righteous shall fall before the wicked, and the lord of creation shall tremble before the burning standards of Hell!"
-Mephisto
Kudos Elfen- and great job. Fine compilation of the lore.

Perhaps they are just leaders in seperate contexts. What I like about the first Diablo manual is all the monsters it lists, it says whom they serve under. And it seemed like Baal's minions would definitely be on the frontline of any assault in an all out battle.
But yeah, I was just under the impression at least that Mephisto was the leader since he was the oldest and since Hatred seemed like the initial seed in sowing evil. But you could very well argue that it is fear or terror that comes first. Then destruction is just the inevitable after math of hatred and terror, or mopping up, so to speak.
Fear is more powerful then anything aka Terror, it's a mental state.
Being fearful can lead you to all kinds of things.
History and Psychology were my fav subjects in school.
What I feel? Tyrael destroyed the World Stone to force the Heavens to meet the burning Hells at the door and to give Sanctuary more time to prepare for the coming storm. He /is/ the defender of Sanctuary, after all.
Since the prime evils are not the rulers in Hell anymore, where did they go when they were defeated in Sanctuary in Diablo II ? If they were sent back to hell, then they probably would of been cast out of Hell again by the same Lesser evils no ?
I heard that they were banished in the the deepest abyss in hell, anyone can back that up ?

I'm thinking when we killed them in DII, they returned to hell. Now if you recall from recent lore, everyone expected hell to invade after the destruction of the world stone. But it didn't. I suspect that in the 20 years after DII, the Prime Evils clashed with the Lesser Evils to regain power. Alliances were forged, broken, etc etc, and the reigning powers finally marshalled forces to invade Sanctuary.

How many times do I have to repeat this, I should really write this down *mumble mumble*
When you kill a Prime Evil it's essence returns to the soulstone, if you destroy the soulstone it sends the essence back to the Black Abyss were it was spawned. If you do not destroy the stone, you or anyone else who happens to get a hold of the stone, can jam the stone into their head and turn into the Prime Evil taht was contained in the stone.
This has been stated by blizzard numerous times. in game by many NPCs, and pretty much anyone who took the time out to learn the lore.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
I'm sorry if this is a repost. But i figured i would post this here to shed some light on the new history of diablo. This comes from kotaku interviewing jay wilson the lead on D3. So anyways....
" Kotaku: So, Jay, what can you tell us about the storyline of Diablo III?
Jay Wilson: In the previous two games, Diablo and his two brothers, Mephisto and Baal, were the three Prime Evils of a world called Sanctuary. Where we start off in Diablo III, it’s twenty years later (after Diablo II: Lord of Destruction) and the brothers are gone, they’ve been vanquished. Essentially everyone was kind of geared for Hell to actually invade. At the end of Lord of Destruction, the Worldstone was destroyed, it left a giant crater and everyone was expecting the hordes to come pouring out of it and nothing happened. So, Deckard Cain is one of our main characters from the first two games, he’s spent the last two decades trying to find out where the last two Evils are, what they’re doing and why the invasion didn’t happen. A lot of the rest of the story focuses on Tyrael, the Angel of Justice, and what’s happened to him since that event as he was actually the angel who destroyed the world."
i think that last sentence refers to Tyrael destroying the world[stone] not the world.
I personally want and believe diablo should/will be in this game. What else would explain the absence of hell for 20 years? Hes been trying to win back hell since his banishment to hell, and im sure since his bout with the mortal heroes he is weakend, pissed and hungry for souls.

Perhaps that's why there are three heads on whatever beast is in the trailer.
Most likely no though...
Also I may just be seeing things.
