NOTICE: SOME INFORMATION MAY BE SPOILER (Info from SIN WAR trilogy)
I've read most, if not all of the books on my own, and I figured I'd throw some info out there.
Concerning the World Stone:
It was created by Inarus to hide sanctuary from both the High Heavens and Burning Hells. Lilith then decided that she was going to take control of the Nephalem and defeat the high heavens and hells on their own. Inarus didn't like that, Killed all of the Nephalem that he could find, and then something or other happened to Lilith, which allowed here to return later on in the series.
Stay with me.
Inarus simultaneously warped the world stone to also supress the powers of the nephalem.
Uldyssian come on the scene, Lilith comes out of hiding, finds him, and then starts to release some of the power he has.
Eventually, it is revealed that the nephalem, in sanctuary at least, can be more powerful then either demons or Angels. (that is, in sanctuary, mortals have the potential to be the most powerful, even when the others are present). Uldyssian somehow changes the structure of the world stone to better benefit mortals and less Inarus.
Big fight between heaven, hell, Uldyssian and his followers, and Inarus and his. Inarus is beat down, gets dragged off by mephisto, and the Angris Council decides that mankind can stay, but everyones memories will be wiped clean of all their powers. That way, they can discover them on their own, but there will still be influence from either side, because it is inevitable.
Now to understand the Nephalem:
The origins of mankind and the result of the hybridization of demons and angels.
Most of the First were Destroyed, but some that survived include:
Rathma (Direct Offspring from Lilith and Inarus/ also founder of Necromancers)
Bul Kathos (Uldyssian meets him too in one of the books, really cool part)
Then the Ancients
- These are all the nephalem I know of.
Then There is Trag' Oul or Trang'Oul (whichever of the 90 ways I have seen it spelled).
He is the protector of sanctuary, and his origins are totally unkown, but it is known that he is there to help keep the balance between good and evil, heaven and hell.
I'm sure i can answer most questions regarding anything here... just let me know
Great info my friend! I am going to have to pick up the books, are they good? They seem very good.
Also, if you check out the "Book of Enoch" and a few others that did not actually make it to the Bible in real life, there are storys very similar to these.
The Nephalem were fallen angel/human hybrids, they were started by Azazel, who led a group of fallen angels down to earth and bred with humans to create very powerful "giants'. One thing to note is that Azazel was very high up and one of Gods main men from what I gather.
Him and Tyreal could be correlated in some way from what I have seen and heard of both, they seem very similar. Except then Azazel is known as one of the greatest evils later on and placed by another angel in solitude/imprisoned forever. Azazel introduced weaponry and make up to humans and started there corruption...
That got God very angry.
Tyreal may very well be a Nephalem in my opinion, because he has more free will and does not follow orders as much as most angels, who take Order as their main priority. Perhaps Tyreal is a Nephalem, not corrupt as I had thought and many others had thought, but just NOT an angel altogether.
He could be a mixture/hybrid, check out the concept art and it makes even more sense... Nephalem?
The Nephalem of Jueda-christianity are nothing like the Nephalem in Diablo.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
The Nephalem of Jueda-christianity are nothing like the Nephalem in Diablo.
I'm just saying that Diablo Lore could slightly be derived from actual Religious Lore in real life... I mean Heaven and Hell do derive from them right?
Actually, that's just logical thinking: First, there's chaos, right? In chaos there's space to argue with others: Hatred (Mephisto). This soon goes very wrong, people start fighting, and wars emerge: Desctruction. Which makes people afraid: Terror.
What I want to know is:
1. Had Diablo planned to draw a powerful hero to Tristram and take possession of him to get a better body than the child's, or was it just luck for him?
2. What exactly happened to the real Summoner if the one you defeat in D2 is fake?
3. How come Tyrael could come to the mortal realm? I thought the Worldstone was supposed to keep both Demons ánd Angels out? The same goes for Diablo, Baal and Mephisto?
4. What happened to Baal's soulstone after he was defeated? Did Tyrael destroy it?
5. Where did the soulstones come from? Pieces of the Worldstone?
6. What did Mephisto plan to do in Khurast?
7. What did Diablo plan to do in Hell?
8. What purpose did Baal intend to use the corrupted Worldstone for?
9. Why did Diablo allow Marius to follow him? Maybe he thrived on Marius' terror? Actually, this would make sence. We see Marius undergoing the effects all the Prime Evils have on him: he's terryfied when he's traveling with Diablo, he's hurt when he hears Mephisto speak ("and that voice.. it was like a thousand needles in my own heart") and he gets destroyed by Baal.
These questions are very good ones!
I think diablo came by luck with the hero coming to Tristram, except him making a ruckus there would have of course causes heros to come so maybe he planned it.
And no one knows how Tyreal got to Sanctuary I don't think?
He is the ONLY ANGEL in sanctuary, makes him quite unique compared to the other angels IMO.

Ok, from the books I can answer these questions.
2. From Legacy of Blood, Horizon and Bartuc merged in the end of the novel, and Horizon, the architect of the Arcane Sanctuary, was actually a part of it. So, after he merged with his evil brother, who knows what happened.
3. The world stone no longer prevents demons or Angels from entering. The 3 were cast there during the civil war in hell, remember? The world stone, as far as my understanding goes, just maintains a solid boundary between heaven and hell.
4. The soulstone became a moot point because...
5. it was a part of the world stone. And my theory is that the supressing capabilities of the worldstone which were implemented upon the nephalem were used similarly on the three.

That just raises even more questions. I mean, if they had merged, why the hell would there be a Warlord of Blood in Diablo 1? And a Bartuc the Bloody in LoD? There were 3 of them?
I believe that was just a mixup between the game creators and the lore. According to lore, there were the two brothers, and Bartuc was still dead during diablo 1 and it was during diablo 2 when the incident between bartuc and Horizon took place
Quote from "Ivaron" »
Yeah, they were cast down, but still how would that make a difference? They still shouldn't have been able to enter the mortal realm.. And if the World Stone just maintains a solid boundary between heaven and hell, what was the point in making it? I thought Inarius made it so Heaven couldn't come to Sanctuary and punish him.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. How are you sure they were parts of the world stone though?
It's a logical deduction, but I don't believe they said this anywhere
But yes, in that case it makes sence to assume the soul stone isn't important anymore.
Inarus just made it so it couldn't be found, not to keep them from entering. Also, it was corrupted by Uldyssian at some point, and the effects of that haven't been totally explored.
As well, eventually the heavens and hell both found sanctuary, as far as the novels go. In the end of the Veiled Prophet, the angris council decides, after letting humanity and sanctuary continue to exist, that they would try to avoid intervention with it, and let human beings make up their own minds. Now, there was some discussion between them and Mephisto, but to what extent hell would hold up its end of the bargan can clearly be seen in everything that is occuring now.
I think Tyreal is simply trying to keep a level playing field, but with the discription of the Angris council, they don't seem to look lightly on any sort of flaws or dishonor.

Well, my theory is that he disobeyed the rest of the angris council.
A few of them, including the leader, wished to wipe humans out, and considered them an abomination. But Tyrael saw something he liked and helped us out, when, as far as I remember from the books, hes wasn't supposed to.
Maybe he's been banished for interfering, and Heaven just wants mankind to be wiped out, so they offer no help at all. (their also too busy dealing with hell itself).

Well, let's break down the purpose of the world stone
1. It was initially created to hide sanctuary from heaven and hell
- This failed
2. It was utilized to suppress the abilities of the nephalem.
- From the Sin War books, we know that Uldyssian corrupted this
Now, it was during the end of the Sin War where Tyrael appealed to the Angris Council on behalf of mankind.
After watching the selfless display by Uldyssian, he was the only who seemed not bent on the destruction or the corruption of humanity.
From here he isn't mentioned in any other books until Legacy of Blood, as far as I know.
In this book he was influential in the defeat of Bartuc's armor, which can be inferred by the conversation between the protagonist and his two companions which he murdered.
From here Tyrael doesn't appear until you reach the end of Act 2, where he is preventing the release of baal.
Baal and the other two get together, you see Tyrael in hell, then not again until you defeat baal.
During none of this have I found evidence of corruption in him, other then the fact that he disobeyed the agreement by the angris council saying they would not interfere.
I think he just sympathized with our cause, and in a way sacrificed himself for our protection.
It wasn't him who planned on corrupting the world stone. That was Baal who obviously did that, and for what reason is the question we need to be asking? We need to look at the root functions of the world stone in relation to the motives of heaven and hell, and the majority of the motive that i see has been on the part of hell, while heavens nose is stuck up in the air. And during all of this, Tyrael is the only one keeping the game somewhat fair for us.

And now, for the most important question: If Diablo is dead in D2, how come D3 is called.. well.. Diablo 3? Is he coming back? Did he plan all of this even further than we thought (like how being defeated in D1 only helped him out eventually, maybe the same goes for D2 although we just can't see how)? Have fun discussing that one... ^^
Well, here is the real question that needs to be answered. ARE THE THREE IMMORTAL?
If they are dead, then who then is able to match any or all of them in power?
Would the forces of hell not be overrun eventually???
Now, here's another of my numerous theories.
The soulstones were made, so that they would entierly consume and suppress anything that was not tied to sanctuary. However, the demons could manifest themselves if the stone were to come in solid contact with a resident of sanctuary. (Thus Diablo in both previous games, and Baal in Tal Rasha).
When diablo was killed in diablo one, the body of the prince showed up after big D went down, because big D was in the soulstone, not in the boy.
So, Mephisto really wasn't Mephisto, but himself projected through the transformation of a human body, and the same goes for both Diablo and Baal.
Now, once the bodies were destroyed, all the essence of the soul must have retruned to the soul stone.
Now, we remeber what happened when Baal broke his soulstone, it wasn't able to completely hold all of his essence. THIS IS KEY HERE!!!
What would have happened if Tal Rasha didn't accept the duity of taking on the stone? BAAL WOULD HAVE ESCAPED THE STONE!!!
Therefore, the smashing of the stones did not kill diablo or mephisto, neither did we when we killed their mortal forms.
Smashing the soul stones simply released their essence back out, to recoperate somewhere.

Ok Scratch that. This is what confused me. A meteor hit Mount Arreat. There is now a burning zone called "Arreat crater", Which might be a huge demon or some spawning portal or I can't even imagine. Does anyone know what this meteor was?
Oh ok and there is where they could easily build their storyline. I'm guessing all the undead and demons are coming from the portal now wide open between sanctuary and hell and diablo with them. Also I remember reading "Tristrum cathedral runs soo deep that it is said to touch hell" Maybe something will revolve around tristrum in diablo 3?
Who knows, it's been 20 years yet the barbarian doesnt really seem stronger, just new skills, and new skills are understandable seing as how old he is now. Maybe with the Tristram Cathedral we will learn more about Diablo. People are complaining about graphics and crap, but im looking forward to another epic story from Blizz..

"And the Evil that was once vanquished shall rise anew! Wrapped in the guise of man shall he walk amongst the innocent, and terror shall consume they that dwell upon the earth! The sky shall rain fire, and the seas will become as blood! The righteous shall fall before the wicked, and the lord of creation shall tremble before the burning standards of Hell!"
-Mephisto
I don't know if anyone has given it any thought but it says the following on the very main page of the Diablo 3 site: "to defend the mortal world against the rising powers of the Burning Hells – and even the failing luminaries of the High Heavens itself."
Which seems to imply the threat will come from Heaven as well. Whether this is Tyreal or something else remains to be seen. There is also concept art on Tyreal which can be taken in several ways. Especially this one : http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/_images/artwork/ss35-hires.jpg . The sketch on top looks like Tyreal doing battle with some other Angelic figure.
To me it's pretty clear that there will be strive between the forces of Heaven as well, but on which side Tyreal will be is something we can only guess at, I'm afraid.
Yeah, Tyrael had been admonished in heaven for his close involvement in mortal affairs. His destroying of the World Stone was probably the last straw. I'm excited to see where this goes.

Another question would be: what happened to the humans now that the Worldstone has been destroyed? Does it mean we'll be able to get more powerful than before?
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the world stone to keep Demons out of Sanctuary? I don't think the Worldstone had anything to do with human strength.
