I'm fairly irritated with the RMAH. I spent hundreds of hours farming for my weapon, and just found out that I can upgrade it for $10.00. Since Blizzard let exploiters horde billions of gold, and gold can now be purchased with real-life currency, it makes the game impossible to play "legit." Farm for 9-12 hours to get 1 million gold (as a melee), or buy 15 million gold from a Chinese farmer for pocket change?
The choice is yours, but since gold no longer has value (depreciated by aforementioned exploiters), look at spending 1-2 months of gold farming to be able to buy a single upgrade. In the end you are competing against bots/machines, and will never be able to outfarm them. To me this is absolutely game breaking, and the only way that this game can possibly be saved is by making separate servers that do not have a RMAH.
They said hardcore was made for a specific audience and that they will not be implementing a RMAH for hardcore as it would completely ruin the overall experience.
So if you want to play on a server without inflated prices or a RMAH go play hardcore. you may like it. i've still yet to try hardcore but plan on it once i finish inferno on my barb.
Unfortunately Blizzard's official position on hardcore RMAH is more of a 'wait and see'. They have said if there is demand for it (which I interpret to be enough use of 3rd parties services), then they will also consider a RMAH for hardcore.
It would be nice to have non-RMAH option that is separated in the same way that softcore and hardcore progress is separate.
I dont get what the big deal is with people wanting to have RMAH free servers.
Diablo 3 is great for me, as I hate playing with General-Joe public as 85% of the time, you get idiots. For me I only play with my friends and it's like having our own server as in our eyes there's only 12-15 or so of us that we actually interact with.
Whatever anyone else is using/farming/exploiting etc doesn't bother nor affect me in the slightest as its as if they dont exist to me.
What I'm trying to say; you're not forced to use or interact with anyone who uses the RMAH.
e: Spelling.
Kinda the same deal regarding PvP open games, or a hostile system. A portion of the player base wants it, but Blizzard feels it is best if it is left out. They also don't want to "seperate" their fanbase. All in all, they should just do it, it isn't like anyone plays public games anyway ha.
I would like to see a character type between normal and hardcore - where both auction houses are disabled but death is not permanent.
My concern stems from my experience so far in that Normal through Hell have been trivial and Inferno Act I only moderately challenging while spending about one-tenth of my gold on upgrades from the AH. Upgrades for Act II are extremely steep which was blunt, but forced on me the way I should have been playing from the begining.
"If you don't like it don't use it." is not an ideal solution since, as with hardcore characters, multiplayer interaction between play-styles spoils it. It's hardly worth the self-control of not using the AH if a friend whom does use the AH joins the game and starts plowing through everything like a hot knife through butter. There really should be some type of distiction so that multiplayer interaction does not defeat the purpose.
I had high hopes for crafting, but even with the reductions in the cost of crafting coming I doubt the gold cost plus the work of breaking down and storing materials will be a viable alternative to the AH. I stopped crafting first tried teh AH when 12 crafts of the first rare helm rolled zero useful items for any of my characters. If there was an AH-free zone it would place a much greater emphasis on crafting and, I think, a much greater solo and multiplayer experience.
I don't see either auction houses as a problem in itself, but thier implimentation all but eliminated the classic in-game trade that would normally occur which is by far less prone to market volatility, farmers, exploits and stays far more realistic in terms of supply, demand and price. The current system of auction houses essentially gives every player access to every item that has ever dropped - the problem being that the best items are always available yet become very expensive due to the relatively low supply yet very high demand while prices on everything else, even good items, plummets since the supply pool is extremely large. When the market pool is shallower, many of the best items wouldn't even be on the market at any given time, therefore making lesser items, such as crafted ones, more valuable.
And the RMAH defiantely exacerbates the issue adding additional demand pressure from an outside resource.

LoL? Dupes didn't percolate through the D2's trades? How about trade volatility wherin users keep trying to rip each other off with unfair barters, without the pressure of competing against every other person with that same item simultaneously?
Say whatever good things about in-game trade, but as a far less efficient system, prices take longer to settle, exploited stuff still gets out there it just takes more time (hence stays concentrated with the exploiters longer), and demand is hindered by the inconvenience of trading. (I have no idea what "realistic" supply/demand is supposed to mean anyway.) "Stable" is not the word I'd use to describe it. The only thing that *might* have given that illusion is the years of no significant updates in Diablo 2 that allowed things to settle till the next dupe wave at least. D3 will get there at some point as well.
tbh, if ure farming for 9-12 hours to get 1 million gold.... Then the only one doing somthing wrong here is you :S. U can make gold faster opening chests in town for gods sake, what on earth are u doing?

Well i'm farming in act 3 doin siegebreaker runs and prob pulling in around 2mil/hour... Sometimes less sometimes more due to RNG but it evens out, ofcourse I am not a melee but theres plenty of vids out there of monks/barbs doin siege runs and no there not wearing 100 million gold worth of gear, there doing it fairly cheaply.

I dont think anyone is using 100 million worth of gear. But you do need to spend millions on the AH to get past Act 2 as a Barb and then double that to even try Act 3.
So yes to get to where you're at you first need to farm act 1 which for me on my Barb, doing butcher runs only net me maybe 100k every 30-45 minutes.. and that's if I vendor all the blues. Because it's rare for me to get something AH worthy from doing butcher runs so I can't count on that.
Server uptime isn't free. Bandwidth isn't free either. Electricity to run those servers isn't free. Blizzard made a shitload from selling the game but to keep the game going for five or ten years when hardly anyone buys it anymore, they need a steady source of income.

Path of Exiles, and D2 would like to have a word with you. Fail logic is fail. The cost of the server maintenace and upkeep goes into the original 60+ you payed for the game. People like you only contribute to EA/Activision bullshit they think they can get away with.
Go right now and look at Path of Exiles.
f2p, and unlimited stash space. You can either pay to have more stash space using microtrans, OR you can make mule accounts. Stop being so ignorant please.
Indie and f2p games are putting the big companies (like blizz) to fucking shame.

i dont consider map packs and expansion packs equal at all. although you could argue wether the BF3 expansions are just map packs or expansions, they are really more of a hybrid things, whereas you get a lot more content via Blizz expansions opposed to CoD map packs.
but you have to realize that companies need a steady income to be able to further support a game, be it through map packs, monthly fees, microtransactions or in this case the RMAH. its not just the servers, also employees who are continuously working on the game or server stability. i guess you think that all this is way easier than it actually is.
and of course they want to make some money out of this also. which will be, to a great extend, be used to make new games. i see nothing wrong with that. blizz is a company after all and not some charity for ppl who dont know what to do with themselves.
And also, Blizzard DO actually release map packs. For free too, look at all the WoW patches.
Last Blue statement is that they don't intend to add more content to the game, the game is done and only thing left on the development table is the PvP feature, nothing more is promised.
expect new maps to come in the form of an expansion or perhaps even dlc's with bnet currency.

and now i ask you where is the difference? both the microtransactions and the RMAH are completely optional and a way to pay for servers, patches, ect.
and you cant really compare D2 to modern games.
Because you can play the entire game without paying? Its F2P, there is NO pricetag. It is NOT a pay to win model.
current AAA (joke rating now) start with a 55-60$ pricepoint. Ive spent 20$ on PoE and I have a huge stash, and i still have 10$ of my 20$ i spent for when they roll out appearance based microtrans.
Same thing with DotA 2, F2P, and they have EVERY Esport feature you could want. There is a huge difference between F2P and a AAA price tag.
1.D3 = 60$ to start, could net $ off you from using the RMAH
2.D2 = 60$ to start (I think thats what I payed for it years ago), no additional $$$
3.PoE = 0$ to start, could net $ of you from using the microtrans
All 3 live online, but... server costs and maintenance right?! WRONG.

The cost of server maintenance doesn't just magically go away. New purchases of the game, however, will eventually go away. It will at least plateau and and cease to generate any profit margins in the green. You also need to account for the player base. Diablo 3's player base probably dwarfs the player base of any of those other F2P's because of hype, popularity, and marketing. That being said, the F2P games use other schemes to make money, be it to purchase gear, unlock specific features, and sometimes to even gain an edge over the competition.
Blizzard decided to use the RMAH becuase they know the appeal that some players have for the Diablo franchise and the drive that presses them to get better gear. Blizzard also isn't ignorant to the fact that some of these same players can potentially have well-paying jobs and are willing to spend extra money on a video game. Take for example the Blizzard Store and what revenue it has created for Blizzard from WoW players, selling in-game pets or mounts, purely aesthetic and aside from the cost paid to the art team to create the item & any storage upgrades needed (hardly ever a problem), every transaction turns a profit for them.
Blizzard also knows the appeal that an auction house game can have for people. It's not a mystery that there are people who play WoW simply to cash in on tons of gold by playing the AH. The same thing will be done here except for real money, with Blizzard having a hand in every purchase made. It's how they pay their employees. It's how they fun additional elements for the games. It's how they keep the server's steady while millions of people try to play the game. And lastly, it's optional. I don't think anyone paying for items can ruin your game play. If anything, be happy that Blizzard gave you the option to make some real-life currency from a FUN video game. I've personally already made my purchase money back off 4 items I got while progressing in early Inferno acts that were pretty good for a class I don't have.
I feel the need to stress the point: RMAH is optional. You don't have to use it. Unless you play with friends who use it, then it won't affect your game play in the slightest. If you don't like it, don't use it. Don't complain.

How come I don't pay a monthly fee to play League of Legends?
I really don't understand where you guys get this mentality, and this is coming from a 28 year old man who has been paying to play online games since Ultima Online. Diablo 3 is not worthy of a subscription fee, and saying that players should have to pay to play is just ridiculous when you take into account the fact that 99% of the online games on the market do not require server/subscription fees.
If server costs were such an issue then Blizzard should at least offer an offline version. They won't even do that.
