Let me preface with a couple of facts. First off, I have been playing D2 since the very first day it came out. Secondly, I have played each class at least through normal and 5/7 through nightmare. I play primarily single player. I understand this hinders my leveling and item drops but I just cant stand my experience being ruined by annoying people. I'm not bad with strategy for this game, what little strategy there is for a hack and slash. Lastly, I do not put in the time required to get the best gear and rune words, primarily because I don't feel this should be the focus of the game and it takes the FUN out of it.
With that said, Hell setting is hard. I have yet to beat the game on hell. I even beat it on nightmare HC. I understand it is possible and many if not most of you guys out there have. So why is it so unobtainable for me. I can assume that playing single player is my greatest handicap, but I just don't really enjoy multi. I also understand that with patience and time this game can always be beaten excluding the guardians in act V. but it always gets to a point where I get so frustrated I just don't want to play anymore. As of right now, I'm going through it with a Hammerdin in hopes that this will make the journey easier an allow me to finally say "I beat it on Hell" .
If anyone has any comments or suggestions for me it would be greatly appreciated. And if anyone else is having the same problem as me, you are not alone.
EDIT: I understand Hell is supposed to be hard and there in lies the satisfaction, but to the point where the game is no fun? Of course IMO.

I don't think it's too hard. I remember I started a private group in Diablo II where we actually did everything ourselves from scratch, and needless to say, we beat Hell and more.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
On single player its wicked hard. I've never beaten it on single player either. Nightmare is pretty easy though even on single.

On single player it can be very hard if you only focused on one element to get threw norm and nm....be a bone necro or a hammerdin and you wont have those problems
Try to level up playing same areas again and again. Use /players 8 if you are powerful enough for the area. When you are high enough you can probably handle the harder areas in hell. Also you can find more better gear by grinding the easier areas.
SIngle player Hell mode is beyond what is reasonably considered to be hard. double and yes even triple immunities.
Fire Immune, Cold Immune, Extra Strong Extra Fast, Magist Resist Aura Enchanted. Yes Ive seen creature with all of those abilities at the same time. A Sorceress cannot do any damage to it at all.
I like a challenge. But one I can do. That shit above is just insane. If you sit there spamming the one attack that does the tiniest bit of damage you will die because it will take to long. In case you havent guess the only attack that works is a hand full of Lightning skills. Yeah the 1-500 (or whatever) Damage ones. Not the good Lightning spell, thunderstorm I think it is which has a higher minimum damage.
Diablo on Hell mode has what 110,000 odd HP in Hell mode. You try standing there doing only a couple of hundred points of damage, you won't last long.
But then that's just one example and it doesn't come up very often. Most of the time you just get Fire/cold immune. but even that is a nightmare for the Sorceress.
I've finished Hell mode but that was with a Druid, Barbarian, Necromancer. I've only got to Act 5 with a Sorceress.
Paladins, well hell since only the big yeti's in Act III are magic immune you can just spam blessed hammer and slid by.

My highest ever toon is a level 77 orb sorc. This was done in single player with no help from guides. I made some stupid mistakes along the way. Despite this i managed to complete the whole game right up to and including hell level baal.

It's not really applicable, since SP forces you to play on your own, without help from any other character. And that is a pretty big disadvantage.

On Singleplayer, you'll never get the gear people point you to in guides. Runewords, excluding relatively simple ones, are out of the question. Breath of the Dying, Enigma etc. You may strike lucky and find some good uniques, but that's about it.

It is hard. Prior to patch 1.10, it was too easy for people on B.net. Why I don't exacly know, but I'm guessing the dupe economy had something to do with it, among other imbalances I'm sure. As a result, the game was ramped up in 1.10, which had the nasty side-effect of making the game excrutiatinly painful in Singleplayer for most classes.
Myself, I got to the famous Ancients with a Meteorb Sorceress before giving up last time. I'm currently playing through D2 again, trying with both A Summonancer and Bowazon. We'll see how that goes.

The key is to play with a character that:
1. Isn't item dependant. You can't get top-notch gear on SP, so the character must be able to stand their own ground. This generally rules out melee classes.
2. Must be able to deal with enemies on their own. This means that Single-element Sorcs are out of the question, unless they're lightning with could work with some luck. But even then, the Ancients will pummel you.
The Hammerdin sounds like a solid bet, if you can stand playing it. I never could, but Blesses Hammer will certainly get the job done, and isn't item dependant. Good luck

lol thers no way an orb sorc will finish hell nowadays, espically in singleplayer
anyway scyberdragon, i dabbled in singleplayer a lil bit got to hell and quit. you need awsome items or an entire day just to get thru the catacombs.
i found a decent drop mod, where it wasnt to crazy but it increased the chances of hr drops and higher lvl item drops, it wasnt rigged but it wasnt impossible. all together i found abt 5 hrs from start to finish, look into getting a drop mod.
unfortuniatley you cannot use chars you already made

DIABLO = DEVIL its not supposed to be a nice game autostats are rediclous lack of pots is not welcome if it aint broke dont fix it! (diablo2)
I thought the engine makes the game harder based on player count?
yes, technically. But in Singleplayer, it's only you. Meaning when that Extra Fast Physical Immune/Lightning Enchanted/Aura Enchanted/ comes along, your Zealer is going to have a shitload of trouble, because he can't kill it. And no sorc buddy of his can help him out with a few well-placed Blizzards.
And it all stops at the Ancients anyways, because there's no running away to town from them.
Same goes with items. You'll find tons of shit that you won't need. Barb gear, Druid gear, Sorc gear. None of that is good if you're playing a Necromancer.

Heh, well someone could always screw around in the .txt files if that's what one want. Or, make some nice cube recipies.
2 Minor Healing Potions -> 1 Vex for example. Or whatever other rune you may wish. That certainly works with already esstablished characters. Although I would perhaps call it cheating

now i want to beat sp too, i gues a druid using huricane/tornado/bear would be a good choice?
i never made a elementalist druid so that would be fun. Or should i use armagedon? considering synergies i'd think huricane is better and safer?
A Druid would be a bit of a challenge I'd guess, though I've never taken one beyond Normal Baal.
Armageddon, last time I looked, is nigh but worthless. And you'll run into the problem of Cold Immunes, no?

there are some builds that just won't work very well anymore.. anything that relies on physical damage or a single element won't work that well or may encounter problems without godly gear.
any melee character should try not to focus on physical damage and go for crushing blow instead.. and try to get amp or decrep from gear or merc as well.
if you use crushing blow and a fast attack you can kill any boss or difficult mob reasonably fast.
(that goes for any character you can make passion runeword which isnt that expensive so a sorc or necro can zeal for instance.. but you'll need to make it in a fast weapon and use ias)
any elementalist can carry around a lower resist wand (shopped from act4 or 5 nm or act1 hell) to up their damage a lot and remove some immunity.
as for survival.. get max resists and max block whenever you can. after that try to increase your damage reduce % (found on items like rockfleece, soe, rockstopper, shaft, shako, stormshield, coa, leviathan)
try to get at least 30% damage reduce, max resists, good block and some fhr
items to meet those requriements can be found by farming areas or bosses in nm.
i play multiplayer but i solo for the first trek through the game on every reset.. it takes me maybe 2-4 days tops (on hc).
but i play a sin and they've got it pretty easy with bad gear. (i think only summon nec has it easier)
things i always do include collecting flawless gems so i can make maybe a perfect amethyst hat for strength or a 2 socket bone shield (shopped from drognan in act2) with perfect diamonds.
i always try to make lionheart armor
always try to mf for a soe and rockstopper or a shaft for damage reduce
always buy a lower resist wand
i always get a good merc and keep him well equipped.
i don't move on to another difficulty until i've got my res maxed for that difficulty (or nearly max)
i use teleport charges to get past annoying areas (like maggot lair)
erm i dont know i hope any of this helps i really don't think the difficulty level is too hard.
i actually hope they increase it in 1.13 to compensate for fixing some bugs that made the game more challenging (fe or fele for instance)

I just got past Nightmare Andy on SP with my Bowazon that uses Magic Arrow and Immolation Arrow only.
I will prove that it works, I already found a couple flaws that I will fix next time I make the same Bowazon, such as only putting points into energy till 30 stats, not 50, like I did.
I am trying a full ice sorceress with the exception of having 9 points into Warmth. Then the points go as follows:
20 Cold Mastery (I hope to get a staff that raises this even higher to help break immunes)
20 Frozen Orb (This will most likely be my main skill even though it has a cool-down time)
20 Ice Bolt (Synergy with both Frozen Orb and Blizzard)
20 Blizzard (Secondary skill mostly for bosses)
10 Ice Blast (Synergy for Blizzard)
10 Glacial Spike (Synergy for Blizzard)
1 Frost Nova (Prerequisite)
If this sorc works, then I will use her for mfing large groups and some bosses or power leveling (for a cheap price: gem or rune of choice, doesn't matter level of gem or rune as I'll take an el rune or chipped gem).

Yeah hell mode is wickedly difficult playing alone, never tried in a party setting but I went in with a Necro around level 70 and had a healthy army of skelly's and mage skelly's level 10 there abouts. They got simply picked apart and I couldn't raise them fast enough, often there weren't enough spare bodies around and I had to make a break for it.
Despite making it to the first level of the jail in the monestary, the going was so tedious and slow I started to loose interest. So I pulled out good ole Mastedex's hero editor v0.96 and bumped up the skills and points. I still had a rough go of it and found in order to get the upper hand on par with normal or nightmare mode I had to put my stats at some insane levels to plow through the levels like normal.
