I got an invite because I was lucky enough to have seen a website that sent out 500 on a random web surfing morning. I signed up and got in right away. I played once but then decided to wait until release so I could avoid any spoilers and just fully enjoy a new experience on release.
A sigil is fine, but adding something under a feat of strength will surely get them a lot of flak. I mean I understand a lot of beta testers put a lot of time and effort into playing and giving feedback and that merits thanks if blizzard wants. I don't know what an appropriate reward would be though.
I've got mixed feelings about this. I was in the beta, and got there by luck. It's not exactly a "feat of strength." But on the other hand, I have a feeling that there will be several achievements that are time limited, will only be available to a few, and that it will not be possible for anyone to get all of them.
For most people, it won't be a matter of trying to get every achievement. It's more of a system to express how you play the game, and to exhibit your history within the game. I logged a lot of hours in beta, and I definitely see it as part of my history within D3. A little momento seems harlmess to me.
Maybe I'm biased because I was in the beta, but that's my perspective on it.
Luckily I was in the beta, but WOW they are really opening themselves up to some serious flaming here...
agreed, but c'mon, by now we all know that deep down all the blizz guys are sadists.
as to OT, i agree that this is a move that seems to have limited reward for the risk, but i think the feats of strength, if i remember correctly, are separate from reg. achievements. i'd be pissed if i couldn't get a completion achievement bc of this, but i don't think that will happen.

I waited for the game the whole time, people that didn't even knew anything about this game will get it.
I think that such achievement is bullshit.
Giving it to everyone who participated to the open beta would be way better in my opinion, as it is based on the wait and an early play of the game, not on luck.
I do think that would have been better. Taking time to download and install the client, just to get in one weekend of play shows at least as much dedication as randomly being selected. Plus those people played the beta at least. Right now this feat even goes to people who won a key and didn't bother to download the client.
Of course, if they opened it to people from the open weekend the name "chosen" wouldn't make sense. Maybe they should have made it available to all beta testers and called it "Advance Scouts" or something.
As someone who never seems to catch a break with Blizzard betas and who's been a staunch supporter of all of their games and has yet to participate in any closed betas for ANY of their games, this annoys me. The feat of strength is not really a big deal, it doesn't count for anything and if I really cared about that I'd have bought the CE instead of standard. The real issue I have is an actual sigil being rewarded to closed beta players.
Don't get me wrong, while I appreciate the few people who seriously "beta tested" to help find bugs and improve the game before release, the people who had inactive accounts that were sent Beta keys but never redeemed them getting any rewards is just a slap in the face to all of us who checked our e-mails multiple times a day for months hoping to see it in our inboxes.
If they gave a FoS to all people with Beta licenses and somehow awarded the sigil to those who had certain achievements during Beta, which would prove they were actually playing, I'd have no ill-will towards this announcement, but unfortunately that's not the case.

Exactly. A FoS doesn't reward cheev points, nor does it count towards / increase any sort of completion for the game. You can still get 100% of the actual achievements and so forth in the game. FoS are just supposed to be almost impossible / incredibly hard to get.
Yea, it came down to luck. Sure it's unfair that someone didn't get chosen in the first place, but that's the damn FoS!

It would be more fair.
Agreed. While I'm not too big on achievements and such, I think that giving people a feat of strength for something they possibly didn't even use (selected people get the tag even if they never logged in) is kind of ridiculous.
This sort of thing is nothing new. Back in late 2008, shortly after the WotLK expansion for WoW was released, I remember being up late working on the level 70 -> 80 grind. Suddenly, at the exact moment the server time hit midnight, a feat of strength achievement notice popped up rewarding me for being logged in on WoW's 4th anniversary. If I remember correctly I was rewarded a pet for earning this feat of strength.
It's not like Blizzard had told us ahead of time that this feat of strength was coming, so if somebody happened to not log in at all that day, they missed out on earning it and the pet that came with it. It was a random award for something people had very little control over seeing as how they didn't know about it in advance. No, the comparison between that and this beta feat of strength is not 100% valid, but it's a similar idea. Feats of strength and rewards that come with them often have a random element that can't be avoided.
Why are you guys upset over 1 damned sigil? There are going to be so many banner customization options that I guarantee that most people who have it won't even use it. I don't even care to see what it looks like and most people won't when the game goes live. Man up and get over it.

It's just the principle.
The mere fact people were selected to participate in an unreleased game and have their hands on it, in some extent, is reward enough. Giving them extra perks that are absolutely impossible to attain for perfectionists and completionists that populate games such as this is simply unfair. It's not about any idea of an added advantage, but the principle of what they are doing after they CLEARLY stated that NOTHING from Beta carries over.

Deal with it.
It has nothing to do with this situation. Everyone was able to access the game this day and it was based more on assiduity than on anything else.
This, sir, was fair.
Having an exclusive feat of strenght and a sigil because you're just lucky isn't.
I admitted the comparison wasn't 100% valid, but saying it has nothing to do with this situation is false. You're missing the basic point that nobody knew that feat of strength was coming. Lots of people had real life things going on that day that prevented them from playing WoW, whereas if they had known that FoS was coming they would have tried to find time to log in anyway. Tons of people missed it because of random luck in that they didn't end up playing that day.
The D3 beta FoS might be more unfair than the WoW example I gave, but that was unfair too. My point was simply that this isn't exactly a new trend in Blizzard's use of feats of strength but an inherent nature of the beast. They're called feats of strength rather than simple achievements for a reason. Completionists will not be able to get them all, no matter how hard they try or how much they cry and complain.

We don't even know what it looks like yet. I bet it's uglier than the ones from the Heroes Rise site, which means no one will use it. You're right that people will forget, but if people bitch enough I bet they'll give it to everyone who open beta'd. But you can never tell these days, they kind of do what they want with some of this achievement stuff.
I foresee a post telling people to calm down because it's a purely cosmetic reward, which I kind of agree with. I might be a little annoyed if I wasn't getting it, but in the end I wouldn't mind because it doesn't give anyone an advantage. It's just 1 sigil.
I'm a little bummed as well, while at the same time happy for those who were invited and will receive this. Fortunately, I was able to rip it up attaining Overachiever on my buddy's account.
FoS and esthetics, shouldnt / dont have to be on any ''fair'' level. If you go to blizcon or anything you get like ingame pets + FoS, do you hear anyone cry about that? No. Im aware that costs real $, and the closed beta was just minimal effort and RNG, yet its just a FoS and esthetics you probably will never use if you get harder achivements anyway.

actually i was pretty pissed about the Paris invitational back in the day that gave out the Tyrael pet but never had that available at any of the US Blizzcons

Very cool, i've been in every closed beta Blizzard has had since the original WoW, and it's nice to get a little something saying I was there!
