As of what we know now gold will not be able to be traded in the expansion. Basically all your crafting costs, gem combining costs, and any other NPC costs will come from what you personally pick up. A lot of players, myself included, I'm sure will be amassing as much gold as they can before the RoS launch so that they will never be throttled by gold in their ability to craft or do other NPC related tasks. Blizzard also seems to be balancing NPC utility costs around the huge excess of gold in the economy, which seems unbalanced for newcomers to the game or anyone who plays the game at a more natural pace.
Should the game start fresh and wipe all gold with a fair amount of warning?
I have about 4 billion gold now and I still would love to see a wipe. I have spent my real life money on gold in the past, but I still would not care if I instantly lost it in the fair interest of the game.
I'm not petitioning for a wipe to happen, I'm just genuinely curious what is everyone's opinion on this I am quite curious?
Never ever going to happen, there's just no reason to piss off players like that. Gold will drop much faster in the expansion so no one is going to be set for life based on what they accumulated in Vanilla. Besides, having a disproportionately huge amount of gold doesn't get you that much, everything important has material requirements.

As I've said in the other threads...hell-to-the-NO.
I'm also saving up as much gold as I can. It's not a bad idea to do in preparation for an expansion. I mean, there are people thinking gold will be thoroughly worthless, and are probably buying up every top end piece of gear they can before the expansion. They can do that, just the same as I'm saving up all my gold for anything I might need it for.
Unlike other people I know, however, who are selling as many pieces on the AH as possible to get that gold, my 46-47 million gold that I have is all from in-game...pickups and vending. 100%. Not one single gold piece is from a sale on the AH.
So while I understand you're not petitioning for any particular wipe, you say you wouldn't mind losing your real life monetary investments "in the interest of fairness"? Thing is, if there's a gold wipe of the entire community, I lose more than just 20 or 40 bucks on gold...my TIME gets taken away and made a complete waste.
And as I've also said in other threads...if Blizzard didn't do a wipe after the Patch 1.0.8 "gold dupe" bug "in the interest of fairness", because they fully acknowledged that it'd only short-change people who earned their progress fair and square? They won't do a wipe simply because an expansion/update is coming, no matter how much better the game looks to play with those updates in place.
With all due respect...I'm really shocked that this is still coming up as an issue, even one just for conversation.

It sounds like you didn't have fun during that time, and were just making an investment. That's what you're saying when you state that "[it would be] made a complete waste". If you had fun, it wasn't a waste; if you didn't have fun, then that begs the question: why were you playing?
Agreed. This is usually my response when people worry about "losing" hardcore characters. It's about the journey..

Okay well, tell you guys what...if it's so much about the "fun of the journey," then you guys can wipe your characters and accounts. I'll be sure to watch to see if your profiles suddently become devoid of high level toons as you so long for another journey from level 1 to wherever you are now.
Here's the reall issue behind "wipes"...
Why is it okay for Blizzard to take the responsibility of wiping everyone's accounts of XP, gold, items, Paragon Levels, or anything else, but if I say to people "just launder your gold and delete your characters," that's suddenly idiotic blasphemy?
I'm not sure if you guys are aware of this aspect of the Diablo franchise, but part of the lure of these games is putting hundreds of hours into it and progressing over time. That's how it is for a lot of people. All? Certainly not. But YET AGAIN...the reason Blizzard didn't wipe everyone's accounts after Patch 1.0.8 was because a lot of people didn't cheat, didn't exploit, didn't take advantage of the bug and didn't take any shortcuts whatsoever. They didn't deserve getting their accounts wiped because they wanted to keep their progress. Blizzard respected that, and to deal with the problem, they punished the individuals who took advantage and left everyone else alone.
Literally the ONLY reasoning I've seen for people supporting a complete or incomplete wipe for when the expansion comes is because some people may have "unfair" advantages. And you know where a lot of that comes from? People who used the AH and now feel guilty. Which is funny to me. I chose to not use the AH, I don't feel guilty for amassing a good nest egg, and I don't want a wipe. People who used the AH, however, are suddenly sitting on this wealth, and the thought of just divesting oneself of it, "donating to charity," or just giving it away to strangers, is just unheard of.
Again...is this only AH users? Certainly not.
Yes, I know...some people have played self-found for a long time, and some of them don't give a crap about their progress, because "it's all about the fun of the journey." Trust me, as a self-found player, I can empathize with that line of thinking. The journey is fun. I'm not saying I'm happy being at the top either, far from it, even my Plvl 76 Monk is FAAAAAAAAAAAAR from the top...I'm still on that journey, as far as I'm concerned.
I'm also not saying any kind of wipe would get me to stop playing. I'm not one of the more conditional members of the community that says "dude, if they X, then I'm not playing anymore...seriously, I'm quitting for good if Blizzard X, I'm not joking." Hell no. If they wiped us, I'd probably just start over, like everyone else would be forced to do.
Doesn't mean I deserve to have my account forcibly wiped...especially when doing that is pretty much an option for any player right this very second.
If you guys don't care about your progress, and want to enjoy the fun of the journey, then please, delete your characters, launder your gold, and start literally from zero when the updates/expansion pack go live. That's absolutely within your rights, and it's something that I would truthfully respect quite a bit, no BS.
But I don't want a wipe, and I shouldn't have to deal with one against my will.
Sorry that I missed the previous thread, I will have to search for it.
The thing is if all gold is wiped then the price of all the NPC vendor abilities will probably go down. So anyone who "has collected a lot legitly" will probably still be better off because crafting and gem combining costs won't be as high to combat the huge excess of gold that is out there. I have a strange feeling that Blizzard will keep balancing the vendor costs in relation to those who have mounds of gold stockpiled, not those who barely have anything or who are playing fresh characters. In the long run, you'd be better off with a wipe if it meant lower vendor costs in ratio to how fast you can collect gold off monsters.
The only reason this kind of wipe would be entertained by me is because gold is already being drastically devalued by having it not be useable for trading it for items. It's basically just taking it a tiny step further and just completely devaluing it by removing it all together and starting clean for the fairness of balancing vendor costs to be more appropriate with the rate at which gold can be fairly collected by an individual in the state of the game at release. At least that is how I see it. Someone who has 1 billion+ gold will just laugh at vendor costs if they make them too low and someone who has hardly any gold or is starting anew will struggle to keep up if they make them too high. Both of those scenarios seem pretty unpalatable, even for me who is stockpiling to a great degree and would have a great advantage.
For me, it has nothing to do with fair or unfair as far as the player base is concerned, I'm more concerned about it from a game balancing perspective in relation to inflated vendor costs.
I hope when people are voting they are thinking beyond "do I want to keep my gold?"
It's interesting nonetheless to see the reaction.
Regarding the whole 'it's all about the fun of the journey' thing... It's one thing to KNOW BEFOREHAND that your character and gold could be wiped (I don't think you lose your gold in D3 Hardcore but if it was on that character in D2 you did) and it's another thing entirely if you play for keeps (just Normal Mode).
I don't think it's going to be that game breaking that everyone could have a billion+ gold at the start of the expansion. You're still going to use it to play the game (craft) and not use it to play the AH. So from that standpoint, I voted no.

It really won't be that big of a head start in my honest opinion, so I voted no, no reason to worry about it.
