Anyone else wondering why we have seen zero evidence of some Runewords making cameos in D3? They were a huge part of LoD, so I was hoping they'd name a few items after the big ones, but it seems they are being avoided.
Yes, yes I have often wondered, staring from out my window through the desolate rains that ever fall upon the wasteland of ruinous fortune, forlorn and broken as a man might ever be; WHERE ARE MY RUNESTONES, O LORD!!! WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME THIS YOUR CRAPPIEST MECHANIC FROM DIABLO 2!!!!!!!!

I've been trying to think of that word for like two weeks now Cameo. Thank you. I was like, camera-something. Camel? No. Campbell's...Campfire...Chameleon...
I've been hoping that they'll put Enigma in as a shitty legendary item for how it completely broke the game.
I'm hoping they learned from the old runewords in D2 and implement a similar system in D3. Gives you something extra to socket. For instance socketable items that work in combos, that might be fun. But nothing as broken as the old runeword system.

runes would create another currency system regardless of how they changed the system. the result will always be the same. runes become currency rather then gold or other items. so ppl trade runes for other things and it turns in LOD all over again. fail idea then, fail idea now.
Any system that requires the player to go online to figure out is bad, i.e looking up runewords, recipes, etc. Jay Wilson mentioned this recently in regards to the new runestone system. I love what the D3 team has done with runestones and I think everyone's excited to try it out. Apparently it is the only system still under construction if you will so who knows what new developments lie ahead!

No no, you're understanding me wrong. I'm not saying bring it back in some form or another, but something that works on a similar mechanic. For example:
Let call them lodestones. So you find a blood lodestone, which grants life regeneration. Now, every lodestone that drops randomly chooses another type of lodestone to be coupled with, so let's say the bloodstone you found couples with a barbed lodestone, which requires a bloodstone. So when you equip the bloodstone and the barbstone, they lock to one another and generate a random property.
This is just a rough example, but the idea is to show you that there are other synergetic systems that can be used, which are not broken at all. At the moment gems are great, but like when D2 just came out, there were so much potential to do more with it. I love the socket mechanic and I hope they expand upon it in future content.
I think some of you are missing what the OP is trying to say. He doesn't want actual runes back, he's just wondering why there aren't any items with the same name that the runewords created..

Now THAT would be awesome! =] it totally deserves such treatment.

Oddly enough, at one point all of the runes from Diablo 2 were in the data, but I can't find them now. (See this video)

I am glad they are gone.
Haha, that would be the best addition to D3 in a long time.
A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
