Necro. It's not likely, but hell, if he could come back, maybe more focussed on summons, demon mind control, other dark spells, etc, then why not. The witchdoc seems to have taken minor offensive casting and curse domains, as well as some summoning.
I doubt they'd take the paladin's role away. Doesn't matter if he's not called Paladin anymore, as long as he's the holy warrior guy/gal. Maybe this time it'd be more of a monk kind of thing, but I really doubt there'd be no holy guy.
The 2 classes I played most in D2 was Barbarian and Sorceress.
Those 2 are the ones I'm concerned and since Barbarian is already there wohoo! I just would like to see some kind of spell caster (mage, sorcerer type) which yeah I bet blizzard won't let out of this game
Remember that the Sorceress is female-only, so whatever type of spell-caster we will have, it very likely will not be the Sorceress exactly. There are plenty of other mage clans to make a class from.
Well first off, I think Blizz realizes that there must be some basics that must be included. You will have a pure melee and a pure caster ie barb and sorc respectively.
I think we can also assume that there is a ranged melee class or it will be a major part of a class.
Blizz has also spoken of trying to make everything seem new and mixing up classes a bit. I think we won't see the necro brought back in the same form, but the class will probably be split into other classes. One of them is the WD (Witch Doctor) who seems to utilize the new and improved bonewall/firewall combination of zombie wall. The WD also has summoned pets which does sort of take the roles of Druid/Necro summons.
The only part of the Necro left really is curses and raising the dead. I can see Blizz combining these aspects of the Necro with the basic paladin concept.
My only problem is trying to predict where Blizz will incorporate a shapeshifter, if they even do before an expansion.
Barbarian - pure melee
Magus - pure caster
Hunter (Ranger) - ranged physical, traps, maybe pets/shift, Assn/Amazon/Druid combo
Knight - Paladin/Necro combination of sorts. Trying to keep the name faction neutral was hard)
Witch Doctor - summoner/caster, Necro/Druid Combo
The Necro/Druid are split up over multiple classes. The Hunter type class incorporates a large portion of the zon/assn where the Druid/Necro are spread around more thinly.
Further now, I'll make a guess at some skill trees.
Magus
-fire/wind
-Ice/water
-light/earth
(I figure they'll try to mix it up so its not the same old same old. Maybe you would use ice after a water spell for increased effectiveness, I don't know. The trees will include utlility in each like an earthen armor, wind knockback, and ice prison etc)
Alot of people are saying we can't have this and can't have that because a Sorceress/Sorcerer is not unisex, so it must be a Mage or a Magus and stuff like that...
There is no confirmation Blizzard will ONLY use unisex names.
I won't be suprised to see "Sorcerer (Diablo1)/Sorceress (Diablo2)", "Rogue(Diablo1 and 2)/Ranger(Warcraft 1/2/3?/wow?)", and probally a new unknown class.
All of these names have references to all of blizzards games, and they are borrowing from their own creations. I remember a while back I said something about them borrowing stuff from Warcraft and some idiot said "OmFG TeHy Wuud NEva Do ThAt U Noob!11one" And now we can quote an employee saying it. lol..
-=-=-=-=-
I don't think there will be a Paladin, Necro, Druid, or Assasin. But we will see the last class a combo of a couple of those. Maybe a Holy Warrior from the Land of the rising sun. I don't want to say Samurai, but maybe something close to that, but way cooler.
Also what of the other classes from Diablo 2?
In Diablo 1 there was the Rogue, Warrior, and Sorcerer. The Rogue became BloodRaven, the Warrior became "The Wanderer" and the Sorcerer became the fake Horazon.
In Diablo 2 we know the Barb is THIS Barb is the new game, only with more battle exp.
Necro - Most likely still following Rathma, and may be a Valuable asset to the game.
Paladin - Could have become corrupted by destroying the soul stones, may be like Izual and need to be killed.
Sorc - Probally driven mad for power, Vizjerei are known for that sometimes, and needs to be killed or saved.
Amazon - Most likely dead, she would never go down without giving her all. She may have been first response to "The Meteor" (BTW it is NOT Diablo)
Assassin - Probally just dissappeared into the night, or was killed trying to kill the Paladin.
Druid - Became uber powerful and is fighting for good in his home area.
So here are some class predictions I have come up with.
Paladin: This prediction is based solely on the coop play that has been emphasized. What better than a party buffer and healer.
Priest: I think if they are truely making a rewarding coop play with distictive play styles a some what pure healing class may finally come into the mix. This would simply speed up the dungeon crawling. No waiting on globes.
Hunter: I really think we will see a non summoning class with a permanent pet arrive. The reason I see this as a prediction is simply the easy steal from WoW. They can have the customization options eaily based on WoW where the Hunter or the pet can be the primary damage output based on the abilities you choose.
Wants: I would like to see a rogue and a druid. I think what these classes have become in WoW would make them fun to play in Diablo. I dont really want to see the zon but there will be a need for a mage.
1: barbarian....
2: spell based character... wizard or whatever they could call it.
3: rogue, hunter... whatever ( amazon + sin)
4: for my part, I see the witch-doctor the same way as the necromancer...
5:paladin...with auras
6: Druid....Completly remade....Moostly focused on meta....bear...wolf...and why not more?
7:something completly new ...maybe like tyrael or izual used to be... some sort of arch-angels...
I think it would be interesting.
I think it would be fairly redundant if one of the five characters is a healer (such as a paladin). It would be far more useful to have something to deal damage so more health loot would drop. Apart from pots healing was never really used in Diablo since it is fast paced. The most likely scenario, one which was mentioned earlier (credit), is that the paladin will be merged with the necro to create some sort of neutral character which would be able to deal dmg and have auras and what not perhaps it will be a *darkened* pally (no chance blizzard will drop the pally all together).
I am guessing that there will be the Mage caster type (obviously considering blizzards desire to attract the maximum amt of players/fans) and a Ranger like the amazon but with melee capabilities. And I believe the last one will be a surprise that no one will see coming due to the grin on every blizzard officials face when talking about the characters (they are excited about something to do with the characters).
I am not sure a healing class would be so redundant. More DPS to kill faster to make more globes drop is understandable but you have to consider boss fights and where they want to go with those. Are boss fights gonna stay 100% of the time a 1 man farm job. I would like to see there be farm boses as well as some that require a bit more. 5 man groups to take down your not so average boss that some group heals and support with Holy DPS (considering were fighting Hells minions) could work for a coop. The thing we dont know is how far this coop idea goes. A priest can work especially a WoW priest who can also spec shadow for DPS.
Seriously though, I really hope we'll be seeing a good, solid, Paladinesque class and nothing as generic as "Fighter", "Warrior" or "Knight".
Exactly what I was talking about.
I only ever played with paladins, and I kn ow atleast 50+ people who agrre with me that the pladin was not only the best character to Farm with but also very high impact when It came to Ubers and DClone

Return to the roots of the game to discover what D3 truly needs to be the only new-age action-RGP since D2.
I think some people are looking to much at d1 and d2 when trying to speculate what the classes are going to be. They are trying to build a diablo that is similar in gameplay but I doubt that they will implement all of the same classes. I am almost certain that they will introduce similar characters(from d1 and d2) merged with some new and some old characters. As for the necro, I think the WD looks way more bad ass, and his skills look pretty sick as well (the only thing is that hes not as evil looking).
More of a question than a subject of debate, I must ask you where the "Sorceress is female-only" came from. Apart from the feminine title, obviously from her being.. well.. female.. I can't really find anything anywhere suggesting that they'd be female-only.
I'm sure the Blizzard, without any problems at all, could make the title different between the Sorcerer and the Sorceress. And as you said, there's more Clans than one - but is the clan of the Sorceress in D2 given away at some point, leading us to believe that they're an all-female-sorc clan?
In short, yes, the sorceress from D2 comes from a group of female-only magi. Check it out at the official website. According to the Wiki (and I think the Diablo 2 manual) the Sorceress belong to the Zann Esu clan.
The male Sorceror [sic] belonged to the Vizjerei Mage Clan.

I'm not familiar with any lore outside the games or the manuals. Could you elaborate? I know of the Vizjerei Mage Clan (naturally), and the renegade sorceress'. I've not come across another reference to a mage clan.

This is kinda what I'm hoping for, but with a completely impractical twist. Lore-wise I think it would be a massive cop-out of the Sorceror [sic] and Sorceress share the same skill tree. The Zann Esu Sorceress' are masters of elemental magic while the Vizjerei Sorcerers had a more generic spell load-out, being able to summon golems and cast Blood Star and Bone Spirit.
Since Rogues belong to the Sisters of the Sightless Eye it would also be a little lame if the male equivalent 'Ranger' had all the same skills.

Have to agree that a healing class in Diablo will be kinda redundant. Diablo has historically been a game that can be enjoyed solo as well as in a group. Even if the healer has a 'smiting' tree (a la Guild Wars) or 'shadow' (a la WoW) it means that there will be at least one whole tab dedicated to healing that will be useless when playing alone.
I also have faith that the Diablo devs also know (and have possibly experienced first hand) how boring it can be to play a healer class in an action game.

I'm going to try and say this in the calmest most rational way I can muster.
Blizzard now has 3 distinct niche game franchises:
World of Warcraft
StarCraft
Diablo
A fourth worth considering is Warcraft 3... but no-one except DotA players are giving that attention of late thanks to the SC2 and D3 announcements.
Diablo is a distinct game franchise from WoW. There are some similarities but *huge* differences. Just like Warcraft and Starcraft have some common ground but in the end are vastly different games.
All 3 these franchises have releases announced, of which WoW will probably receive Wrath of the Lich King way before SC2 and D3 see the light of day. Please go play that and leave Diablo for the Diablo fans. You don't see Warcraft fans clamouring for heroes in StarCraft 2 because they know it's sacrilege.
On top of that Blizzard have also announced that they are working on a next-gen MMO. Another reason to please let Diablo be Diablo, without healer classes or DPS.
(reading over this again I see that it's relatively difficult to read and this last section is completely off topic... <sigh> it's so difficult to stay on topic sometimes).

im looking forward to a tank-styled class (like a paladin) or something of a Paladin or warrior, if there isnt im gunna have to use the quick character and Barbarian (i like combat-oriented classes)

The necromancer was not evil, just different. If he was evil he wouldn't be fighting against demons, or Diablo for that matter...
