"Can I change Gateways like in StarCraft I to play with people in other regions?
Unlike StarCraft I, there is no gateway selection to allow you to play with players in other regions. You will only be able to play against players within the same region as you."
In another Q&A.
Q. Will we be able to play with our friends on other continents like we could in StarCraft's Battle.net?
A. Currently we do not have plans to integrate friends between regions for launch. In the long run that's definitely something we'll be looking at.
Essentially, they won't even support such a feature that is as old as internet itself at launch.
I'm sorry. This is the most pathetic bullshit I have ever heard, I just had to share, I never heard about this before. If I have any friends in Europe for example, no way to play them. And of course no LAN either. And pirates will get private servers and easy LAN accross the world.
I just can't believe it. Wow... is it written that anything in gaming these days have to take 10 step back for every step forward? B.net 2.0 is looking like shit right now... I also saw there is no channel chats and such... I'm sorry, I'm just whining. This could hit D3 as well.
That is pretty dumb. I'll give them the benefit of a doubt that they have some reason for it, but even then... What if I was fluent in Chinese and wanted to play with people from China? Like, geeze... : /
This sucks. It really does. I disagree with few design choices Blizzard makes, but this is the exception. Bandwidth has exploded 3 billion times since SC1. If I have to take some latency then that's my own problem isn't it?
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

Doubt it has anything to do with technical limitations. Maybe legal/financial?
Legally there was no problem to have it in any other B.net game, even up until today. Perhaps if they want to have microtransactions or some such, but there's been no talk of that.
In any case, unless the barrier is actually technical and thus out of reach for Blizzard and free to confess they cannot accommodate it, we'll never hear the real reason.

I've never heard of that before, but I'm sure a very good reason is because the lag that would start once you start hitting 1000 miles away from each other. A couple hundred ms across an ocean is a LOT.
However, they should allow you to play non-ranked games with people that far away.

How could Blizzard do that.
Lol dude... you are overreacting -.-
Bnet 2.0 looks great. And YES THERE IS GOING TO BE NORMAL CHANNEL CHAT.
There is just no chat right now in the beta.
As far as not being able to play with people from other regions goes, i'd say its a good decision from blizz.
In wc3, all the pro players played in Asia. Sure, we had pros in Eu and UsE, some in west but the majority just played in Asia.
Blizz want to prevent these kind of things... Also, they probably want to maintain a low latency for all the players on each server.
If i play on US i get 200+ ping. Thats shit.
Anyway im still gona buy sc2, even if people think it gona suck for... technical reasons... And people, stop overreacting.. they also said they will look into these kind of things in the future etc.
Wow that is totally retarded. I've met many people from all over the world who I would very much enjoy playing with. Look how diverse this forum is. Many people here have developed relationships and played D2 together for years. Will we even be able to play D3 together or will only Americans be able to play with Americans and etc? Sucks balls.

Blizzard didn't say that the lack of chat was -beta only-. From what I understand it would stay that way, but maybe it won't.
Obviously if there's asian people on the West server, it should be easy to avoid them... what the hell does that do to you?
Removing the freedom of playing wherever you around the world is a big deal, I'm not -overreacting-, its a ridiculously retarded decision and there is nothing else to it, especially if they don't offer any sort of alternative to connect directly with someone anywhere.
They MAY rectify this in the future. Hopefully they do, but its still inexcusable. That they want people to play mostly in their zone so you don't lag people in Asia: I understand. But don't stop people from playing with their friends regardless of where they are.
And if its a technical limitation of bnet 2.0, I wonder what the hell were they thinking while making it.

Wow..Hope this dont hit Diablo3...
Yeah... with some chance, they will hold to their words and allow it later for SC2 and by that time, D3 won't even be out and when we do get that, we'll be able to play with anyone.
There is going to be an option similar to LAN but it will be a part of b.net. So yes you will be able to play with a friend from Europe if you live in America, but you wont be able to connect to the Eu realm... Well...
Legally there was no problem to have it in any other B.net game, even up until today. Perhaps if they want to have microtransactions or some such, but there's been no talk of that.

You are actually very incorrect in that phrozen. Blizzard has stated several times that they intend to have microtransactions. They are making a blizzard store similiar to the apple app store, but instead for sc2 maps. Basically they want to promote a custom map industry and make studios that publish mods.
DOTA on Wc3 was so vastly popular, that they figure if they release such a powerful editor + engine, they can make a whole new industry (and obviously take a cut of sales)

Right, they did mention that in the past. Perhaps that is the cause then.

So far the decisions they are making with Sc2 is vary poor. I mean a 2010 game without LAN? That wont prevent piracy it will instead cause more of it.

can play as if it is lan through battle.net, its no big deal. one connection can easily hold 3-4 computers playing.
and i think it will help a bit against piracy. at least those that wanted to play multiplayer without buying.
on the "region locked sc2". it only exists for the launch where the most people will be online and latencies will be higher than usual anyway. they said they'd add the option to play with different regions sometime in the future.
also on the financial part, the prices vary alot. in the States its 60$, in Europe its 60 euro (about 10 euro more expensive than it should be), in Russia its cheap shit but you got to pay extra for the multiplayer and for the rest of the world i have absolutely no idea.
it is confirmed that chat windows will be implemented, if not by launch of Starcraft II then for sure in a content patch later on. the group system works very well. the match-making system needs more people i think
they implemented chat windows and promote more use of their forums through it (can add players through the forums or through previously played maps including custom maps)
you only have to pay for maps that have things that are unique (custom models, FPS game, Uberlisk aka betty)
so dota wont be one of those for the time being (the dota they have now doesnt use custom models or anything outside of the wc3 editor on a SC2 engine)
so far no lan, however the way they made SC2 is a way they can implement more things into the game as time goes on unlike in diablo 2 and SC1 (both still have their limits but they can impliment gameplay changes at least)
What? Who said anything about paying for custom maps? I can't find anything by Blizzard stating this. It's certainly not currently the case, and if someone is stating it WILL be, I'd like a link, i.e., CITATION NEEDED.
I really hate to be all "FUCK DUDE, TRUST ME!!"
But fuck dude, trust me.
They actually said they were going to make a map marketplace, I think they called it.
If I get some time later I'll try to drudge up an article, I know it was kicking around somewhere on the Beta forums.
As for the lack of LAN, I just had a "LAN" party at a buds house last night with SCII, we just played it online instead of with LAN cables. If you have a good enough connection, it's really no different.
Granted, I still don't agree with Blizzards choice regarding LAN, but I'm, just saying, it's not the end of the world.

There's no pay model yet, and what I think he meant is that people can opt to charge for them if they wish. To do that though, they would have to go through Blizzard approval to make sure their standards are high enough. It does not mean a map will cost as soon as it has custom content. In any case, there's no pay for maps service yet.
Maps are however hosted by Blizzard, regardless of whether they're free or not. Any one account can only host, or publish as it is called, five maps at time, which are stored on Blizzard's servers.

I can just LOL at such an absurd decision... blizz seem to be failing hard with battle.net 2.0
