Is a BoP/BoE style economy really the wisest choice for a none-mmo rpg? Sure wow has a more robust trade economy but it has significant downsides. The problem with a gold based economy system such as WoWs is that the gold system is designed as a quick medium of exchange for a huge variety of goods, from weapons to armor, to potions, to plans, to pets, to food, to worthless doohickies. In the MMO setting it's fine, in a regular rpg, it's a hassle. Any WoW player recognizes how much of a grind getting gold can be. Quite a few high level items are completely unattainable without several days of gold grinding. Constant, repetitive daily quest in Sunwell, hours of running around fields looking for ore to sell, ect are all the driving force of the player economy. That's ok for WoW, but for a regular rpg, lots of players would likely want a focus other than gold farming.
Also WoW has implemented an efficient auction house system that allows a few hundred players to quickly exchange goods quickly and efficiently. There's no such system in Diablo II and one would likely be needed to deal with currency exchanges in III. It's so much easier to simply trade items, than to advertise/hope for a buyer of an item you have, sell it for currency, then turn around and start asking for someone to sell what you want for a price you want.
Inflation might do more harm to players than good. There will always be business moguls in any game that features any sort of economy. The cost of high quality items will be high, in all likely hood high enough that the item won't be affordable without either grinding or saving for a while. This controls the item flow somewhat, but by only limiting high priced items to people willing to put in hard grinds for the cash. But the side effect always seems to be those less devoted to financial pursuits in many mmo's find themselves more and more strapped for cash as levels progress. In alot of ways this makes many mmo task simulated work designed to simply save up enough gold to buy an item so you can have slightly more fun. Sure finally getting the item is fun, but gold grinds are just tolerable in mmo's. Requiring such a system in a game like Diablo just doesn't sound right. And honestly seeing item values deflated in a non-mmo doesn't bother me in the least bit, accessibility to a wider audience is more important.
I'm certain they will not have an auction house in Diablo III. The games are not connected, and you cannot choose which server your game is created on.... I don't think it would be a plausible idea for an auction house.
So I agree with you. And I think you know as well as I do that MMO style drops will not be implemented.
If anything I believe it will be Guild-Wars style drops. Guild Wars was created by *gasp* what was left of Blizzard North! And by the looks of it, they are taking a leaf out of their book. Everybody can SEE the drops, but they are grayed out for everybody but who it drops for.
But as far as BoE/BoP, the furthest I can see this going is binding to your account. This would make much more sense and wouldn't be a hassle. BoP/BoE is understandable in an MMO environment because you don't toss your characters away as quickly as one would in a Diablo scenario.
Unless they are planning on players to have character longevity, (meaning that when we create a character, they will be your main for 90% of what you do, etc), then BoP and BoE would be a hassle that would become aggravating.
How will BoE and possibly BoP effect muling? What if my character does have an array of items that they use, say a pvp set, a leveling set, and a mf set (for arguments sake since we dont know if mf will exist). Would I be able to store these on mules and they just can't equip them?
I hope they just allow you to store masses and masses of items in your chest or something similar.

yes i saw your bit about bla bla bla no spam but i disagree with you 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000% i really cant say anything more than the following: which is that diablo is a game of trading very rare items. you cant do that if ur the only one who can use it

So you want the realms swarmed with people who only wear purchased items? Okay.... Have a nice time with another potentially great Diablo game but without any economy. That's not something I will fall for again. What's the point to farm for items day and night when somebody can pay a few bucks and get perfect godly gear in 15 minutes. There's nothing that makes you different from those noobs when you play with them.
I definately would not like the BoP/BoE system, if i get tired of a character/mess up the character and want to trade the stuff off of it and make a different character that uses different stuff instead, My items would have no value. Also, yes BoP/BoE does not promote free trade/ free market. In the real world, when a company buys equipment, thier equipment is not bound to that company, they can sell it when they need to upgrade to help cover the costs of the new equipment.
The people who would have bought the old equipment would not get it to better their company.. now the two companies are worse off... which in turn messes up the economy.
Why would you want to transfer your items when you can just do the same bosses with your other char and get the same items?
Also, free market? I don't know if d2legit.com is the free market you talk about.
Unless they made items AT LEAST bound to your entire account, after a few months there will be so many items around that they will have no value what so ever. And everyone will be buying them from loot sites just like it happened with D2. That's the fun for you?

Thats why some of us said a bind on account might be better, therefore your other characters could use it if it was a "universal" item. Also Blizzard already stated they plan on making it easier to transfer item between characters, I think the best idea would be a account stash that can be accessed by all of your characters while in game.
Titan Quest did this pretty good; What I don't realise is why they're kept small. There's really no reason for ALL stashes NOT to be shared across all characters, with lots and lots of space.
I have not played Titan Quest therefore was unaware of that. I disagree that the stash should be huge, that would just promote item hording, but having enough space in the stash is a good idea. Just not too much. If that makes sense.
A BoE system could work. It wouldn't necessarily mean people had to roll (God effin' forbid) but once you wear it you can't trade it. BoP on the other hand should be banned forever since you might find, as in LoD, an amulet with +2 sorc [and other random GOSU Godlike stats] which you wouldn't be able to give your own sorc or trade for something else that you might need, and instead sell it for 130k gold which you would lose if you die once...
I'm guessing you didn't read my post, either. I even said there would still be obvious items that would become a part of a trade, but if you want this to become another Diablo 2 economy, then I guess that's your right to say so, but it doesn't mean it's a bad idea if you want a major flaw in the game. You don't want gold to have value, do you?
actualy i dont want gold to have value. Diablo players are smart enough to set their own currencies wether its hex's or soj's
boe and bop items would ruin the game. Diablo and WoW are different types of games and i dont know how many people will have to tell you that for you to believe it.
maybe something sort of like an AH would be usefull where you could post up items that you wish to trade and suggest offers and such instead of joining as many trade games as possible or using jsp.

I appreciate all the hard work that has been put into this game and it looks amazing. it just doesnt look diablo, it looks like diablocraft.

First you criticize another poster for an idea that is in WoW, then you make a suggestion for the game that is also in WoW. How is that logical?

I am not saying that either idea is bad but how could one idea be bad because D3 is not Wow, yet another idea that is in WoW ok?
I personally wouldn't mind some type of BOE system on select items like I previously suggested but think an improved and easier way to trade will solve this issue much better.
personally, I enjoyed being able to turn over my obsolete gear to my low level alts after I was done with it, and obviously BoE or BoP would kill that.
However I see the value in the OP's argument that not having BoE or BoP really drives down the value of a rare items.
"Diablo is a trading game, and we have no plans to change that. We don't have any inclination to make items bind to a character, or otherwise remove trading opportunities.
Will there be absolutely no items that will be bound to a character? It isn't possible to say with any certainty at this point, there might be." Bashiok
I highly doubt blizzard will use a BoP or BoE system to control the amount of items. However if they have to resort to it I would prefer they use a BoE without the BoP. I find a BoP just frustrating since it is a waste if you get a nice item you already have but cant trade it. Also I think BoE should only be used on class specific items. I guess another way to reduce the amount of circulation of a certain item is by reducing its chances of dropping or by limiting the number in circulation by making only a certain amount droppable and then making the item unattainable (a terrible idea).
