The barbarian picks up Gothic Plate... and its green... Wtf? seriously.
More dark gritty art plzzzz
but did you like the glowing axes with blue lightning bolts? lol

"[Diablo1+2] obviously had the gothic look to it, but, you they weren't, they weren't very uh, very colorful games."
"We want to take dark as an emotion, rather than an actual color art choice." -Rob Pardo
"Why the hell shouldn't it be for 'kiddies', it's a goddamn game afterall." -lethlan
While a dark, grittier more gothic-esque would be cool, the cartoon-like graphics are still uber. Idk i guess I'm tired of seeing every game using the gray shade over every texture they use in their games, and this breaks away from it, and does a great job. You know, you can change it by reformatting and re-artworking all the textures when the game releases if you like.
wever the game can be represented in other ways rather than looking like an updated WoW.
Uses the same engine as far as I can tell or more or less, the same artists.

Its just not diablo though. That is why people are upset. We love diablo 1 and 2, and we want to see its epic art style transposed into diablo 3. It doesnt have to be 'omg turn up my brightness dark' we mean dark in a more evil gritty sense. Some of the comparison photoshop edits show this well.
I agree, I myself have posted the "how it looks now", "How it should look like" image on several boards and I'm not happy with the happy-go-lucky atmosphere of the game. I'm making this post because I want to add not only to looks but physical state of the environments. We were shown the Tristram Cathedral dungeon. What we saw was an orderly and well kept environment. Where's the cathedral I saw Diablo 2? Where's the massive state of disrepair? Where's the darkness? Where's the blood on the walls, the cobwebs, the filth, the pentagrams, the freaking look that tells you this place has been abondoned by people long ago and has been taken by fucking DEMONS! Didn't see it.
I have decided to quote myself opinion from other topic, just because I love myself opinion
I also agree with the people not satisfied on the art direction chosen by Blizzard. But it's not something as simple as needing to be "darker" or something about brightness and gamma.
Is the characters textures themselves which are painted in a cartoon way, there is no normal mapping or realistic shaders on the characters and environment (exception the FX which is superb).
To be honest, and ignoring the low resolution issue, the characters from D2 have much better detail and texture.
The art direction, in general, is wondreous, I love how the pics look in the thumbnails and low res videos, but having a Barbarian with painted muscles and no normal mapping?!
I'm sure the overall problem is caused because Blizzard is so focused on making the engine running even on low-end PCs, and they have just decided to not do any sort of advanced lighting/shader interaction.
Any way, from any other perspective, I think I'm gonna love D3 and gonna buy it whether it looks a little like WoW or not.
the color and feel is a bit cartoonish, however your examples of "fixes" see TOO black and white/dark. but i do agree, the colors are a bit bright for diablo (not saying we need a lack of color, just a bit of a diff tone to them) along with the models being wow feeling.
You know, you can change it by reformatting and re-artworking all the textures when the game releases if you like.
The reason I would buy D3 is to play it not make my own game. They have been stuck on the cartoony look for a long time. If you like the cartoon style WoW or WC3 are perfect games for you. Diablo was never intended to be cartoony or as colorful. Diablo 2 was a very gothic and mature looking game. This style completely goes against that.
Seriously, Blizzard might as well have called this game "Warcraft: Hell's Gate".
"It's in my humble opinion that Diablo III can't go 3D and maintain its trademark click to kill feel... it's hard to imagine such tiny characters on screen in 3D without becoming cartoony. Picture the units in Warcraft 3—there's a reason that the chunky style works for this world—the eye can identify small units that have large, cylindrical arms and giant blocky weapons. Without the limitations of polygons—current screen resolutions combined with Blizzard's artistic talent could create a Diablo that we've only seen in our mind's eye, one that is essentially concept art imported directly into the game without the artistically-limiting technical compromises of 3D modeling."
The clunky models they show on blizzard.com/diablo3/characters/ are nothing compared to the awesome concept art they show beside them.
And on the other hand, here is an article saying why this will not happen to diablo: http://www.mikehuang.com/blog/2008/03/diablo-3-handdrawn-i-think-not.html
Basically, this would take too much time;
"Imagine hand drawing 30 frames for each of the following: getting hit, casting a spell, attacking, talking, and running and you've got just the basics -- that doesn't account for all the different directions the character could be facing, or any of the extra variations of getting hit or casting a spell you might want to include. Doing all that work by hand just to create a look doesn't make sense when you can emulate that look with much less work using 3D animation tools. Also, there are no sprite-based graphics accelerators to help optimize the drawing of pre-rendered frames, and there's a finite limit to how quickly data can be brought in through the system."
Well I'm sure there is a way to imitate the "hand drawn" look through some sort of 3d render, but I am a noob at 3D graphics, so I won't to speculate too much. Whatever the outcome, I just hope D3 gets the Dark/Grainy look we were all expecting.
I personally enjoyed the light radius. Much more realistic in a dark dungeon.
Most of the pictures, if not all, on diablo3.com are in day time. I hope they DO keep light radius for sources of light in nighttime instances or dark caves etc. If you are in a dark cave with a torch or whatever, you are not going to be able to see everything evenly.

The 3d model of characters is THE cartoonish part that we have seen so far. Blizzard needs to make serious efforts in the final release of the game since your character will be everywhere you go.
It would suck really if the game was awesome BUT you hated your character. That would definitely kill your in-game experience !
Let's take the witch doctor for example, wtf is the purple thingy on his head? Is he in some sort of Brazilian carnival or what?
Blizzard most definitely has to review its choice of colors.

Bethesda Softworks modelled tons of moves for both the first person view and 'locked rpg view' in Elder Scrolls IV.
Then why can't Blizzard do the same for merely the 'locked rpg view'?
Granted that it will take more development time and resources, but for hell's sake :D, Blizzard needs to take as much time as needed to give us a game that will not dissapoint 'old' daiblo, diablo 2 fans !
Let's cross our fingers and hope that the lords of Blizzard hear the distant prayers of its diablo fanbase.
At this stage it's look like Prince of Persia, I'm agree with you, it's look like very cartoon. I'm totally agree with your draw, send this to Blizz PLEASE!!
Sorry if my english is not perfect, I'm french =P. Very nice draw too.

Yeah i did, its a little hard to represent that in a differnt way.
However the game can be represented in other ways rather than looking like an updated WoW.

But, I do want gothic and evil... Its why I play the game
It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
It states why Diablo III should be hand drawn, and i completely agree:

Diablo I and II had always been at night for the exception of lut gholein. so the images below represent night only.
