Edit: If you have three blocks deep, yes that works too, but then the loot doesn't flow from that third block. In my example, where the cobblestone wall begins, pushes them down and the next block keeps them underwater.
Also, just trapped some Creepers in this setup too. They don't seem to float...
Oh, I see. The only thing is if you do it my way, you can get all of the drops to funnel into one square so you dont have to walk around to pick everything up. Not a big deal though. Either way we will have this around our main wall.

PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I don't quite know about the water. If we have the three block thick wall that allows us to go through the interior of the wall, then you would have to have a deeper water well, and if we use redstone under the wall to open the gates, the water would have to be deeper still...
I still don't get the point of a loot moat. If you have torches on the wall, you would have to lure the mobs to the moat, which in that time you could of just killed the dang thing outright and moved on to the next thing your doing. And, I say again, if we have metal doors (Which we need metal doors, or otherwise there is no point of having a wall) then we have to have a redstone system under the wall to a switch that lets you open and close it. You cannot have a two block deep moat if you have 3 blocks under the wall for the redstone system.
Besides, as Airandius keeps saying, we can just make monster traps and be done with it.
With the recent discussion on houses, I had an idea. I was viewing the houses more as just a place to put personal items. Therefore they wouldn't need much space. However, I understand everyone wants to build their own structures tha would require more space.
My proposal is that we:
A.) build a bank were people can keep their personal items in. Each room/chest can be labeled with a players name and we will obviously all respect each others belongings.
B.) where the houses would have gone, we have a field of nether gates. One for each person. Through the nether gates we can travel further. Each player can go into the nether, venture a ways away from the original and build a new gate. Where ever they appear, they can build their own structure.
This will save us space in our city. The bank will create a convinient place to house personal items. The nether gates will allow us to travel to other distances quicker. Paths can be made in the nether for navigation to the other gates. People will be able to build what they want, within a certain size limit, without disturbing the room needed for the city and further expansion. I you wantto see someone elses building, you can just enter their gate, follow the path, and enter the othergate to their building.

Even if that is so, you should stop be able to create multiple gates in the nether to other areas in the regular world. Which would be even better because we would only need one original gate.

If we spread our shit out too much, it's hardly going to feel like a town.
I say we just expand to 20x20 and call it quits, that way we have more than enough room to be creative, yet we still won't be taking up much space.
And furthermore, why the hell are we worried about space on an infinite map?
Really now..

It's not necessarily space limitation as it it building time and resources. With a 20x20 house and apprimately 15 houses. Figuring you want about five blocks in between for spacing. That is a square area of over 9000 blocks. This is an area that we have to level down. Approximating an average of 5 blocks high (considering we won't be able to find this big of an area very flat) that is over 45,000 blocks we have to destroy just to create the area forthe houses. The wall around would have to be 375 squares on each side. At even three bricks high and two walls (the other two not being needed cause they are in the city) that is over 2000 blocks just for the wall.
A 20x20 house doesn't seem that bad by itself but addig enough room for everyone's house becomes a daunting task. Cutting it down to 10x10 reduces the numbe down to about 3500 blocks which lowers the excavation to about 17500 blocks. About a third of the work. And if we do the portal idea we need next to no space. And everyone can still have plenty of room to build whatever house they want.
And don't forget, houses aren't the only thing that is gong to be in the city.

I think we should go with a 10x10 size for housing. 20x20 seemed like it would be a good size when Scyber and I were planning this out, but in reality, its just too big. 10x10 still allows for comfortable levels, but ultimately, the housing is for private storage.
This is a picture of the two sizes next to each other. Although the 10x10 seems pretty small from the height the picture was taken at, its really not. You can find this area on the map pretty easily for your own outlook. The top right corner is SFJake's house and on the left is the bridge that goes to Scyber's fort.
Good news guys. We might be getting HP sooner than later according to Notch's development blog.
Today and tomorrow will be two days of solid work. I’m currently working on server-side health and some performance tweaks. It looks like I might want to rewrite (or at the very least refactor) parts of the lighting engine to get better control over it. For server-side health, the current issue is that the client is sending the wrong entity id for targets.
I’m also looking into fixing a bunch of lag issues, specifically the returning blocks after mining them bug.

Another small thing. I've been told here and there that there is a command to show who's online, something like..
/list
or
/playerlist.
None of these worked for me. Do you know anything about that? Did you somehow deactivate them in your server?

Also, I don't think it would feel like a city if it's just got a gate to some nether instead of actual houses.
