I think we should go with a 10x10 size for housing. 20x20 seemed like it would be a good size when Scyber and I were planning this out, but in reality, its just too big. 10x10 still allows for comfortable levels, but ultimately, the housing is for private storage.
Exactly. It's not like building a 10x10 house in the town will prevent you from building that big-ass house outside of town if you want. The point of the town is just to have a cohesive center where we can all have a small spot to store items and meet. Big projects will then have to be done outside of town. Like a 20x20 or 30x30 house if you want that.

I’m also looking into fixing a bunch of lag issues, specifically the returning blocks after mining them bug.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I thought that was a point of the town. Or city. To be a huge project. One that can't be accomplished in a few days or a week, one thats going to be huge and impressive.
If we're aiming small, why are we even making a city? I don't see what all having our stuff at the same place is of any concern. Except it makes us that much easier to grief.
When we keep hearing that the town needs to be small for practicality, then thats just it. You're building it to be practical instead of making it an impressive project like any other. Why? I'm not against some level of practicality but... especially in multiplayer, I'd think the goal was "think big". People have built gigantic stuff alone, after all.
Also, update on SMP health from his blog:
Here’s the status:
* Send attack network data: DONE
* Add the ability to attack other entities: DONE
* Implement falling damage: NOT STARTED
* Implement respawning for dead players: PARTIALLY DONE (there are bugs with the player keeping the current location in some circumstances instead )
* Make eating food regenerate health: DONE
* Send health updates to the players: DONE
The “attack entities” code is done on a general level, so you can hurt animals, monsters, boats, carts and even other players.
There are a couple of other tweaks in the next update as well:
* Fix leaves. Again: DONE
* Optimize the lighting update slowdowns: STARTED
* Make players riding carts or boats a long way receive terrain updates: DONE
* Fix the block re-spawning bug: NOT STARTED
* Add “pvp” toggle flag to the server settings: NOT STARTED.
For me, it's not just about being bigger. Its about looking good. I think we can all agree that our current map does not look good. This is with all of us creating our own buildings (supposed to be around 20x20). If this is what our residential area looked like in our new city, I would not be happy. These smaller houses, again, are just supposed to be a place to store personal items. Every player will still be able to leave the city and build whatever they want. However, the same will not be for the houses. Junction and I decided and we want to keep houses to 10x10. We also want to keep houses to a maximum of three floors. A basement, entry level and an upstairs. This should be plenty of room for their purposes.
Also, Hp should be fixed by early next week and this is when we will be resetting the map.
The few hours I’ve been able to work today, I tried getting SMP Health as complete as possible. It will be released early next week.

Don't take my words as any sort of disrespect, but I can't agree on this. I'm a bit annoyed, but so be it. The decision is made.
I don't find the current state of our city bad, building wise, except for the simple fact that it has no organization whatsoever. Just actually placing the houses next to each other in an organized fashion will go a long way to feel like a city, regardless of their size.
Junction and I both understand not everyone is going to be happy with the plans for the houses. I think while we build the city, people will at least understand where we are coming from. And again, I want to stress that everyone will be able to build whatever they want away from the city.

But again, people will just build shitty houses inside of the city limits due to the size restrictions, then build their fuckoff awesome houses outside where they have more space. Which will boil right back down to the "whenever, wherever" style of building.
And why is flat land an issue? Can we not MAKE flat land with pickaxes and shovels? We can find a fairly flat place, then just level a mountain, then go on to build our city where it used to be. Size really shouldn't be an issue, and I don't see why we have to structure this like a RL city, why must we have a designated residential area?
Should just rope off an area for industrial, mine shafts, a section for future expansion, then allocate semi-large building areas to each player. After house areas have been claimed and the foundations laid down, we build a wall around the city, leaving several extra plots for new players if we get any.
Just my nitpickings.
edit: This seems like the type of thing we should have a vote on...

Well, seeing as how you haven't really played the game, I'll try to explain this to you.
first, the town needs to be as close to our spawn point as possible. Players can use the /home command to automatically go back to town. I don't want to have to walk back and forth.
Secondly, yes. We can level an area we want to build on. However, this takes time of mind numbing mining that not many enjoy. Tearing down about 45,000 blocks just doesn't sound like fun to me and I want to have fun.
If it helps, don't think of these buildings as your house. Think of them as storage units. All we should be doing with these buildings is filling them with chests to put armor, tools, and rare ores in. It's not like you need an actual place to sleep at night.
Junction and I talked about putting it to a vote but we just saw no reason to make the 20x20 other than people just want to build bigger structures (which people will still be able to do). This would not only increase the size we need and time it would take but it would also make for longer travel for those who are in the back corner just to get some quick supplies. All increasing the buildings to 20x20 is make it harder for everyone.
Sorry if this decision upsets some people but I think it will work out once we do it in game. We have a lot more buildings to create like the elaborate town hall ~40x40, commerce buildings ~7 buildings, farms, testing facilities. And with PVP officially being implemented, the coliseum for dueling and monster fights. trust me, there will be plenty of big buildings we will get to create.

Think we could work with the landscape as much as possible to give the city a more organic feel (ie: leave some hills or shoreline)? It would reduce the amount of dirt we have to move around if we don't level everything in our way.
Alright 20x20 for houses. We will begin the new map when the update comes out. Right now, the big square idea is the one we will go with. As far as how everything will be laid out, I am thinkng we will go with airandius' layout for the most part. With HP working this should be a lot of fun.

I’m definitely going to add hardcore mode to the game where dying will destroy the world. I’m not sure how it would work in multiplayer, though.. Perhaps you could get “banned” from the server until the world resets if you die on a server running hardcore mode.
Alright guys, I am going to be shutting off the server until we get the HP update which should be tomorrow or wednesday (my comp needs a day off). When the new patch comes out, we will all be starting on a new world with the construction of our city. I will layout more detailed plans later for the start of this project.

I would suggest we use a server mod to get a whitelist for the server. This should reduce potential griefing to almost zero. As it stands now anyone could give the IP to a friend who can just join in whenever. That friend could also give the ip to another friend etc etc. If we wish to keep it within DiabloFans limits fairly well we should have a whitelist. (A list of people who can join the server, anyone who is not on the whitelist won't be able to join).
Should probably go with hMod(Hey0) http://wiki.hey0.net/Main_Page
It also comes with loads of useful features such as usergroups, motd and more.
Nice with the update, I just hope it's not full of annoying bugs

That mods looks basic enough yet has all those little features that sounds very useful to have. I support this.
alright, every player right now is set up with a user group and color/title in game. You can check the OP for colors/titles. I am also using the whitelist which restricts access to other players unless i add them. I have added everyone on the OP. If you would like to play, please let me know so I can add you to the whitelist. The server is up for now if you would like to check it out.
everybody has these commands enabled:
/help,/sethome,/home,/spawn,/me,/msg,/kit,/playerlist,/warp,/motd,/compass,/tell,/m,/who
most importantly is the /home and /sethome so you can create your own home location to warp to. /playerlist will also now allow anybody to see who else is on. As of right now, Junction and I are the only ones who can ban players and other admin commands.
Also, we still need a conductor, engineer, master explorer, traveler. If you are interested, please let me know.
Unfortunately, I will be working a lot this week and won't be able to get on much. For now, I would like if everyone would just make some smaller mines and build up some resources for our town.We should also all put the difficulty to normal.

Alright, after about 6 maps, I think I found one that will work. The server is up and running. Unfortunately, the mod with the user groups and titles does not work right now with the update but when they fix it I'll reapply it.

Outdated client!
That's what I get when I try to connect
I should have the latest update (v 1.2.3_01).
I mainly enjoy building shit and exploring caverns, so probably an explorer/spelunker.
