There have been so many attempts to try and copy the success of Diablo, and I was just wondering if Diablo 3 doesn't succeed to everyone's expectations, would the genre fall off?
Note : I'm not implying that Diablo 3 won't be successful, this was just a theory about how high everyone's expectations of Diablo 3 will be, and if it isn't successful, who else could hold a torch to what blizzard has brought and created in this genre.

The problem with TQ was it wasn't computer friendly and the Online sucked. If they had open and closed style of multiplayer with better optimization it could have been pretty damn good.
The problem with TQ is the skill system, imo. Great idea, really lousy implementation. If you had one character with a certain skillset, you've seen enough of that skillset. Which effectively reduced the number of unique characters to 4.
Not the mention the sound effects and visuals when you executed a skill were just boring. If you look at D1 and D2, much older games which were their inspiration, you can really feel like you're doing stuff and killing things when you used a skill in those games. That's completely gone in TQ. Big shame.
And there are no custom levels in TQ, so you'd have to be bored out of your mind or genuinely really intruiged by an odd good thing in the game to want to play through the whole story again. I mean, you've seen it all in one walk through.
Don't want to harsh, TQ is a good game, but it just doesn't come close to the Diablo series.
I dunno I liked all the combos of classes. But it never captured me like the Diablo series.
Though I am not a fan of the current track that Blizzard is taking with DIII, I have to agree with someone who previously said in an other topic:
"Blizzard could poop in a box and it would still sell by millions"
In a way it is true, but if DIII would fail, it would not kill the crawler genre but it would cripple it.
If Blizzard put out a bad game, people would still buy it. However I think that would hurt their future sales of subsequent games.
If they were to fail with this game, who would take up the torch? There is really no other game like this. The closest thing would in my opinion be the countless MMO's out there. This is why I am so strong in the opposition of adding wow-elements to the game.
I would say yes; because there's no other game in the genre I'd want to play, personally.

I agree for the most part but other games like NWN and DS, would still persist, though without someone to show them the ropes they would fall short of what players can expect of a good crawler.
I am 99.99% sure that Diablo III will not fail to be a success. I also highly doubt that Diablo III will not be a crappy game. Blizzard never had failed us with there games. Why would they want the fail now?

I think that the only reason Diablo II captured me over TQ was because of the atmosphere... I just loved DI and DII becuase it was dark, and the gameplay was just soooo awesome in DII.
It is very unlikely that Diablo 3 will fail because fans will go out and buy it anyway and any aspects of the game that they don't like, they'd get used to it.
