Although a shit ton of money, figure in server costs, employee costs and about 50000000 other things.
That is true, but believe it, they still have alot of left overs after the server costs and maintenance and crap... cuz $150 mill is ALOT ALOT of money.
My god, there are a lot of retarded people in here.
Allow me to explain something:
MMPORGs require a massive server infrastructure to keep them going. This costs a large amount of money, more than the box-price of the game.
Battle.net does not run game servers. All Battle.net consists of is a bunch of glorified chat servers, with some web and DB bits to make a nice interface for setting up games. The actual games themselves are done via Peer to Peer networking, and do not require any game servers on Blizzard's end.
The conclusion? Battle.net is much, much cheaper to run than an MMPORG infrastructure, therefore not actually requiring a monthly subscription to keep the servers running. Want more content? Buy the inevitable expansion pack(s).
Why the fuck would blizzard cannibalise it's sales by insisting on a subscription model, when it simply isnt needed?
Its simple. If D3 is p2p than I will keep playing D2. Besides, the Nec PWNS the Witch Doc anyways.
Because you have played as the witch doctor, and have seen just how much the Nec pwns him, right?
Why do so many judge when the game is so far from release???
A monthly fee would be stupid. D3 is NOT an MMO, and therefore we should not have to pay monthly. A monthly fee does NOT keep out little kiddies, it keeps out people who feel that paying money per month to play a game is a waste of money.
Even without regular updates, D2 is still an excellent game. Why, then, do so many assume that D3 will not live up to it?
First, not all 10 million of those players are active right now. That 10 million figure is the total number of accounts - loads of those people stopped playing years ago. That figure also includes trial accounts, and gold farmers who set up new accounts every day...
No, those are subscriptions, and not trial account. And plus blizz doesnt give a fuck if you don't play, but if you have a subscription you have to pay anyways. Unless your account is frozen then you dont pay ofc. But out of those 10 mill ppl, all those accounts are active.

truth, thank you migs and yeah they will be making money off the large amounts of game purchases alone, people will still play WoW because it is the king of the mmo's.
people have probably said this, but I will say it anyay: WoW makes blizzard enough money to maintain the reformed bnet and keep d3 up-to-date without a monthly fee. I cant say what blizzard will do, but I imagine they will keep bnet a free service even with the changes when d3 is out.

"You are what you are, and that is the only truth in this world."
I have the 1.12 patch. Basically it is a no-brainer... I mean - a no CD loader. From the time D2 came out I don't think one-fifth of the population was running with a CD. Running with a CD slowed down your system too damn much. What they did was release an authorized no CD loader. Until 1.12 a no CD loader was a hack, so it was illegal on bnet; but they've been out there for years. And the cinematic you get to watch before this six second download is called "Sisters to the Slaughter". It is the first cinematic on the D2 CD. So, they didn't really go to any effort on this patch. Most programmers, and they don't even have to be good programmers, could have written that one in their sleep.
I went and looked at the update listing on the bnet panel, and for a period of one year, from mid 2007 until now there were exactly two updates listed. This was several days ago. At the Arreat Summit I read an update that took place after a long term of nothing. The person making the update apologized by saying that they had been so busy with WoW that there just wasn't time.
From what I understand, the Diablo servers just kept going straight downhill after I left four years ago; and it was really, really, really bad when I quit. Bnet had recently had a hell of a time with the Nihlathak bot. The Diablo servers have to be costing them a lot of unnecessary finances since they have to work constantly to keep eliminating all the bullshit that people kept putting up on them. It isn't very funny, and it isn't very fun.
If nothing else, I'm hoping that they will at least sponsor p2p servers for those of us who would rather have a decent, peaceful gaming experience without having to deal with all the jerks out there that are taking, or have taken, Turbo Pascal and think they can use that logic to write a small worthwhile computer program (hack).
Some of the people here act as though these games don't cost anything to produce. I beg to differ. Good computer programmers make really good money. So do graphic artists. So do CEOs, Voice Actors, and so on. Patents, copyrights, trademarks - this shit's not free. Too many people here don't know jack about financial matters - including how finances are appropriated within a company or corporation.
Look at the list of credits on your D2 cd. This is not just a cost - it's an upfront cost. By the time D3 comes out, all the people listed under the credits have already been compensated for their efforts. This upfront cost is massive. Price markup from cost isn't as much as a lot of people seem to think it is, and you have to make allowances for the part of the game cost that Blizzard doesn't get. That is the percentage that goes to the retailers - those folks that manufacturing companies really rely on to dispense their products. And when the cost of maintaining the servers from all the retards with a hack, and other support functions as well, is more than the sales of the game, it becomes a financial burden. Sales from the game will only support the server for so long; and you have to go by the net profit of the game, not the entire cost you paid at the store.
Is math really that bad in public schools? English certainly is.
And I really wish everyone would quit blaming the kids for everything - it's a very wrong assertion. I had wonderful days playing with kids on bnet (when it was up). I had at least as much trouble with adults as I did with kids.
This thread is yet another reminder to me of the utter idiocy some people spew from their brains.
Let's see, benefits of Pay to Play:
1. Constant updates with new content.
2. Reduced hackers/spammers/dupers, and increased overall support
3. Servers require money for maintenance, bandwidth costs, etc. (More of a practicality than a benefit really)
Ok now let's address those issues.
1. Now where have I heard of this before...OH YEA! Valve's Team Fortress 2, Diablo II, and any number of games on the Xbox 360 and PC which give their loyal players extra incentive to keep playing, creating brand loyalty in the process, keeping people from pirating their games. For instance, Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 is getting a free update with new maps and upgrades in a little while.
Secondly, why should you prefer a subscription service to a full-on expansion pack? With a subscription service, even those who cannot afford or are unwilling to pay for it are completely banned from playing. Whereas with an expansion pack the players who do not wish to have new content, cannot afford it, or are unwilling to pay extra, can have the option NOT to purchase it. And guess what? THEY STILL GET TO PLAY.
2. Who in their right minds thinks this kind of service requires extra payment on the part of the players? Diablo II was constantly attacking hackers, dupers, and every other sort of cheating all the time. I myself was banned for map-hacking a while ago. Any company that takes it upon themselves to offer online play must take into consideration that they have a responsibilty to keep their servers clean and healthy. Valve does it, Battle.net has been doing it for years, and I see no reason why you're OFFERING to pad their wallets with an unecessary cost.
3. This alone of the things I've mentioned bears any semblence of merit. With the ever-increasing volume of players in these past few years it has become increasingly costly to maintain a healthy server with enough bandwidth to sustain so many. $5 a month might be enough to keep them up and running.
AH. But I now counter my own point. And equally effective strategy which requires absolutely zero extra payment from US, is advertisement. Just like in Diablo II, the Battle.net lobby can have ad-banners which give Blizzard a constant stream of revenue while the players are online. I would personally rather have ads clutter my space than pay a monthly fee.
But what's more, I'm ideologically opposed to monthly fees for games. I've come to accept that certain services such as Cable, Internet, Phone, etc. have a monthly fee because they require constant service, attention, and cost on the part of the company. But a game is not a service, even when it has online play. I should never have to pay again for a product I have already purchased. There has to be a limit here. If Diablo were the only game I played, even 15 dollars wouldn't be much of an expense. But it isn't. I buy 2 games a month and I play them. I play a lot of games, because that's what I do, I'm a gamer. Diablo II may be my favorite game of all time but I'll be damned if I'm giving up a game a month just so I can play one I already own. Fuck that, fuck subscriptions, and fuck the whole pay to play system.
i agree that there SHOULD be a monthly fee. not to get rid of the kids, i can care less about that. Hell, the more people playing the more money blizz would make monthly.
the reason i suggest a monthly fee is because they would be more devoted to do maintenance and updates.
sure its true, when the game comes out theyre going to be on top of things, but what about 2-3 years down the road?
look at d2, they dont "update" anything, the most they do is reset the ladder ever what, 2 times a year? botting has got out of hand, website spammers invade rooms, etc.
i believe that if there was to be a monthly fee (doesnt necessarily have to be 15 dollars) the game would be better taken care of, and in a much better state 2-3-4 years down the road, unlike diablo 2.

Na man, for a game like WoW you actually do need monthly subscribes. And those ad-banners you talked about wouldnt do the job. You saw how many realms they have??? and they keep increasing them, because thats ALOT of servers and those servers need maintenance and upgrades and ofc constant content. Blizz knew this was going to be expensive so they created this revolutionary pay2play system. ONLY for WoW. Now D3 is a whole different game.
i agree that there SHOULD be a monthly fee. not to get rid of the kids, i can care less about that. Hell, the more people playing the more money blizz would make monthly.

just be 2 pennies =P
Dude, it doesnt matter. It's not possible for there to be a monthly fee for D3. find the post Migs posted, youll understand. And plus, blizz makes $150 mill a month, thats MORE than enough.^_^
Sorry, but i simply cannot afford this amount of money per month.
Your not taking in all the factors here. Even if i was to pay what if i don't have paypal? what if i do not have a credit card?. If it is like WoW with game Cards at every local store, in my area a store that sells Game cards are very far away and then i gotta figure out the transport fee etc to get there.
It is very annoying having to do something like this each month, when i can barely scrape up something like 15$ (in Australia its about 20$)
If i had to scrape up this money it would require me not buying as much food, or sacrificing something that could do health damage in the end. Nobody has to sacrifice their food to live on to pay for a game to play it online. As hard as it is going to be to get around 100$ to buy the game its self, im ok with that if its a 1 off thing. I simply cannot pay every month.
I'd pay a fee like 20$ for a battle net account, if it was for an unlimited time-use.
That way Blizzard get a lot of money from everyone, that money can go towards updates etc. Everyone spending money per month is just going overboard, they have WoW as their cash cow.
I really hope Blizzard does something reasonable. I understand maybe having Battle net completely free would mean no updates for games.
Except im sure many of the people here would pay a 1 off fee between 1-30$ for a "Battle net account" and have unlimited use. But monthly is just too much.
Having a monthly fee for d3 will not:
1. Keep little kids out.
2. Confirm continued updates for d3. (blizz wont let this franchise die out)
3. Keep people from hacking, botting, dupping...etc. (even wow still has this)
WoW is monthly because of the server use and maintenance.
D3 is not a mmo and doesn't need excessive amounts of server to support a mass of people running around.

You can't afford $15 a month without loss of food, how the hell do you have a computer capable of playing d3? You need roughly a $800 computer self built to play, there is no way you can afford an $800 computer but not $15 a month.

Well there could be a fee to play online, since starcraft 2 will have one (they confirmed this in a interview with the german magazine Gamestar june last year (2007). Cause they wanted money for the support from the server....:S
Since when does starcraft have servers? Pretty sure plays host the games retard.
Here's a solution... most people these days have a webcam why not incorporate that into Bnet somehow... where there is admins verifying your age via a live stream before you can enter a game... the admins would also have the power to deny you if they thought you looked like a tool.
You'll find that it's not really the age demographic which means they'll act immature. There are plently, more than you'd realise who are in their 20's and act like they are 12. Trying to keep underaged people out isn't going to solve anything.
And then look at wow, you can't really say that's updated frequently (with meaningful updates) from the end of black temple you had over a whole year before sunwell opened, a whole YEAR for a dungeon and your playing to pay, if you think you'd get quests every week you sorely mistaken how this p2p method works. You get some content every now and again, but it's far from frequent.

That is just... creepy...
Don't think so... VERY bad things would happen lol.
Also to everyone who wants P2P, for the 0920832908230th time... its on Bnet...
Very little to NO server cost... Bnet is not P2P and probably won't be ever.
