I am about lvl 15 mostly dealing with goatmen and I'm noticing that if I get cornered, swarmed, or caught low on discipline I'm basically toast. It doesn't happen all that often but when it does I can't seem to kill things fast enough or have any wiggle room for error. Like in that goat town when 30 of em swarm you and one ends up being a jailor. Died three friggin times (mostly due to the jailor and getting smooshed by trash)
Meanwhile on my wizard I not only seem more durable, but can toss out much more damage, especially aoe and have room to recover from dumb mistakes. I don't think my gear is all that different between the two either with the demon hunter having the edge there. So I'm wondering if there is just a difference in their survivability or what. Also can some of the other classes take more than a couple hits before going squish? I know some bosses are built to one hit basically, but I'm talking about on just general trash. kiting while low on hatred and discipline is not exactly fun to me.
Basically I'm trying to tell if this is just the way it is. If so I'll deal and adjust. Or if some of the other classes are more durable or have more tools at their disposal to not die. or if im just sucking with my hunter. sadly all ive found to work was binding evasive fire as my main attack and rapid fire as my secondary. even then if two things get close its a shot or two and almost no health left.
Barb is obviously less squishy. I partied with a DH and they died almost every time they rushed ahead.
Obviously Wizard is more your play style, if you die less as a Wiz. My only advice for your DH is... DAMAGE. Up that damage and nothing will have time to squish you.
First: The DH isn't a tanking class. Most of it's defensive abilities are "oh shit run away" things. Still, Smoke Screen is actualy very good, vault too when used well.
Second: Unlike the wizard, DH main stats is Dexterity, Dext second bonus is dodge, while wizard's intellect second bonus is resistance. Remember that resistance is composed of both magical AND physical aspect of damage taken. So in other words, having more intellect actualy decrease damage taken.
So you probably right now end up having alot more dodge than other class like wizards (as it's your main stats), but you also miss the armor from strength and resistance (physical and magical) from Intellect.
Making you squishy when you don't dodge. So yes, having some intellect and strength is not a bad thing to consider. Obviously Dexterity remains your primary stats.
Ah I didn't even think about the stat differences. certainly explains the durability when mobs do close in on me. I enjoy the mobility of the oh hit buttons, but when those run out it gets pretty hairy. Not fitting my play style is certainly a valid point. could be the DH doesn't mesh as well with me as say the wizard. I'm not going to give up on him necessarily, but could fall to an alt position for the sake of my enjoyment
Very squishy. It's the class that asks the most of the player to avoid dying. Not saying it can't be played well to avoid dying, just that it's a lot easier as the 4 other classes.

I grew up gaming without internet forums. The entire phenomenon of being upset with a game developer makes no sense to me. No sense. I cannot imagine spending my time and energy being upset about something I choose to do for recreation.
my DH was demolishing everything until i got to belial, got one-shot 6 times in his 2nd phase, and realized i had been stacking dex, gold and magic find %100 of the time. added some +vit, and switched my quiver for a shield. took longer, but much less squishy.
oh as an after thought wouldnt monks be equally squishy since their main stat is also dex? or do they have more mitigation at their disposal? haven't really looked at their skills yet.
I'll definately play around with some of the ideas concerning DH. The meshing factor so to speak might still be an issue, but im having fun in the process so meh

But yea, i was SUPER fucking squishy from levels ~ 20 - 29, luckily I was playing coop with my buddy a monk. But it wasn't until I upgraded all my gear that I finally felt safe lol. Also apparently a 2-4 damage ring is way > a 22 dex ring lol. But having made a bunch of perfect gems so far and getting decent drops, I'm at 900 dps now and Idk if I'm squishy because multishot fucking rapes lol.
On my WD (level 40) I was getting destroyed early on in the game, but then I started stacking gear with INT and VIT on it, this gave me a large health pool, high damage, and high resistance.
I assume if you do the same but with DEX instead of INT you'll be less squishy.
I believe monks, like barbarians, have a flat damage reduction due to being a melee class. 30% if the tip on the loading screen is right.
I've been playing Monk, and I'm currently lvl 22. And even with a 30% reduction in dmg, situations when I'm surrounded by lots of mobs is still very dangerous. If I let myself get surrounded and don't do something quickly, I usually find my life dropping VERY rapidly. But yeah, the difference with you I guess is that I can usually do something about it like knockback the mobs with Lashing Tail Kick, or use Breath of Heaven to heal up etc etc...I haven't played DH very much, but in my experience in the beta, it seems the DH's method of dealing with this is to slow enemies and re-position themselves so that they're never in that situation where they get surrounded?
I don't know if any class, other than the barb, is supposed to be able to tank groups of mobs that well. Seems to me that if you let yourself be surrounded by monsters, or don't do something to get out of that situation quickly, you SHOULD expect to get killed pretty quickly,
The only time I have a chance to die is when I'm out of Discipline which is why Preparation is awesome.
Also, Smoke Screen is OP, it's like a Paladin bubble (WoW) with no cooldown. (You don't take any damage while it's on, not even AoE damage or anything)
I'm only in normal at the moment (Just killed act two's final boss with out dying once too bad the rest of my group couldn't say the same haha) And i'm in LOVE with Smoke screen. I didn't know it made you immune.
How are you feeling with smoke screen and no vault. Are you okay with out it? Do you use Shadow power?
What kind of rune are you using with Smoke screen?

So much THIS that it can be seen from outer space.
I keep hearing about how squishy DH is, but in my first play through I felt very confident in my survivability. The DH has a great tool kit for kiting while maintaining damage.
Somethings I found helpful:
run cantrips and entangling shot- you'll be near untouchable.
Use smoke bomb to avoid damage. When you are stealthed, you dodge all attacks and resist all spells.
Stack dex/vit gear, you'll get a buffer if you are hit and should still be able to blow things up.
Elemental Arrow with the lightning rune is insane aoe, use it to clear large trash packs, if you're too low, use chakram.
Entangling with the shock rune is good damage and cc, I'd recommend it until you can kite with only cantrips.
When doing a boss fight, switch to impale, it hits VERY hard.
Make sure to upgrade your weapon as often as possible, it will be a large determinant in your damage output. If you can get a drop, go for a craft or grab one from a vendor. I found a couple 1hs at about level 18 that lasted until level 24. Look around for events featuring merchants, they often have very good items for your level.

Right now, Im not saying it's best, but it sure feels like I can defend my self.
I use :
Entangling Shot with Chain
Chakram with twins
Smoke screen
vault
with the +12% damage on slowed target
can't remember last passive.
with this I was able to keep people at bay and still be able to deal ALOT of dps with Chakram.
Do these things and you should be able to succeed as well as any other class in hardcore.

That guy ate my face quite a few times also.
The DH has lots of kiting potential and tricks to keep the gap wide, use them.
