I too, consider Second Life and Farmville to be in the same genre as WoW.
I also consider sled dogs and honda accords to be a peers by means of conveyance.
Edit: In before someone accuses blizzard of going after the coveted farmville audience.
ohhh two exceptions, my mistake.
second life obviously falls into its own catagory, all i did in that game was fly around and make spheres.
the same way say MMO first person shooters like stupid war rock falls into its own catagory.
i meant cookie cutout MMO-RPG's
The problem is, there is no sense in even grouping those together.
You would need to cite just how much the audience of each game overlaps. Most people don't play any "mmo." They play fantasy-rpg mmo titles like WoW, EQ, or GW. They play fps mmo titles. They play sci-fi themed mmo titles. It's like listing how many people drink caffeine without supplying the kind of beverage they're getting it from. It doesn't prove anything except the addictive properties of caffeine. You could assume that coffee, being the most popular beverage, puts a dent in the mountain dew market; but in reality that would be unlikely.
I'm not saying WoW belongs in a league of it's own (far from it these days), but you could easily make something of your list... assuming you take the time to figure out which titles are/were actual competitors.
I played the POE beta... it was bad. People rip on D3's story... man seriously the story of Path of Exile is you're exiled, crash on an island, and go up a literal path up the island. TL1 was just bad bad. It was Diablo 1 made 10+ years later. TL2 looks like Diablo 2 made 11 years later. They're so far behind on the evolution it's not even funny compared to D3.
Really, I don't see any more people hating D3 and threatening to quit than I saw every day of every week in WoW, and there's still millions subscribed to that. For every one of them, there's 100 players that don't go to forums and just play the game in their bubble and enjoy the hell out of it. Aside from them nerfing gear and specs every gd time I buy a full gear set, I'm loving the game. Bought a full +health regen set for my wizard... two days later force armor is nerfed. Bought full +attack speed gear for my barb as he's leveling with 2 handed Frenzy... nerfed. Only thing I've hated.
And that's the key. Good players adapt. The rest...do something else.
When I get sick of D3, I go to BF3, or MW3. Sometimes sex when I feel like it.
You mean when she feels like it.
lmao exactly =D
To OP; I agree specifically about torchlight 2 and PoE. TL felt like a Red Robin arcade game to me, and I just couldn't have fun. I also played the PoE beta before D3 hit, and I defiantly had more fun then TL. But you're correct I spammed one skill the entire game and chugged potions like it was D1. It was also disheartening to realize there was an average of maybe 1-2 enemy types per huge area, it was just the same mob over and over. I also didn't like skills being tied with gems, which are tied to whatever color socket happens to be on your gear. I can go on and on, but my main point is; I agree, D3 will live for a loooong time.
if not for the simple fact that there really arent a whole lot of options.
You're saying the whole reason people will keep playing Diablo III is because there aren't many other ARPG's like it?
That's like saying you're going to open a restaurant in a small town that's the only one like it around, but have shitty food. People are still not going to go there.
Who cares what kind of game it is when you get right down to it? If it's a well designed game, it's fun to play. If it's not, the interest will decline. Mediocre games are mediocre.

No, it's like being the only decent restaurant in town that everyone goes to and still bitches about because they can't even begin to fathom eating at those other places who haven't even got a table and chairs.
The implication that the ARPG market has all kinds of relevant competition was already debunked.

It's more like being the only sit-down italian restaurant in town and everyone goes because they don't want McDonald's but they sit around and bitch at the color of the draperies and the fact that they really wanted fine french cuisine but all you have is pasta. You know, like old people who are never happy about anything, ever. Think Kyle's cousin on South Park.
I personally was disappointed with the game. I would give it like a 7/10, but by no means do I think it will die anytime soon. I was also able to make ~$200 from selling my monks gear after I got bored (was able to solo inferno diablo). Part of it was I just had super high expectations. I will probably give it a look again when pvp comes out (haven't played the new patch at all). The main thing I am wondering about is how are the going to balance the pvp out with the huge gear disparities/dps. Will you just play you class with set stats but choose your skills? Otherwise I could see a ton of people just getting one shot. At the same time though people would be super pissed that gear didn't matter, so who knows.
Im a casual player. Im not a complainer. I have barely 10hrs to play per week. Ill stay with D3 simply because Im lovin' it. Coming online, slay monsters, get loot (proper or vendor ones, doesn't matter) and have a chat with friends. That's all I need for a game. Im not ragin neither Im quitting. Maybe some ppl should play a bit less and stop being cool just due to hatin'.
D3 got so much right but also got so much wrong... If they would have cloned D2 with newer graphics, upgraded security, and a few other things - D3 would be the rightful heir, but in its current state it's nowhere near D2
Some Notes:
- As someone else noted, there is no sense of ownership of your character. Stat points and rerolling characters allowed for this. It forced you to reroll if you messed up. Sure there were cookie cutter builds - you can't argue against the fact that D3 still has cookie cutter builds... It allowed you to min/max characters.
- Rerolling was FUN and EASY. You messed up a few stat points? Want to maximize your character's potential? Reroll. With rushing, you can be caught up to your friends and back on the level grind in no time. Which, by the way, the level grind was something I actually enjoyed. It gave purpose to playing while simultaneously searching for gear and upgrades.
-Lastly, the game can be straight up frustrating. Playing inferno those first few weeks, I've had 3 friends nerdrage and uninstall. Sure, that's a bit drastic, but the endgame was downright frustrating. Only those that used illegitimate tactics to progress through inferno and find those first few items are now rich with hundreds of millions of gold... sweet QA team there, Blizz. Really glad you guys "dabbled" in inferno to test your endgame content. Further proof that the game was not ready for ship. Don't really know wtf they have been doing all this time. Pretty disappointing in a company that laid off how many employees last year?
everytime an MMO comes out it's ''look this is the WoW killer'' and last time I checked, WoW is still very much alive and kicking, Diablo 3 won't die anytime soon...
@ Savages, im actually really really glad they didnt just clone D2 with new graphics, not even going to go into it
that being said, it wouldnt bother me if they did just this, modified the unbalanced skills ( get some median xl type shit going) and called it diablo 2 reborn or diablo 2.5
What do you mean?! I've killed the bastard several times over!
On topic: Diablo won't die, give it a few months to a year and there will just be the majority of solid Diablo players, most of the whiners will have gone back to wow for Mists of Pandaria, or start guild wars 2. Then we'll be left alone for our indepth discussions on build and whether we should run left as opposed to running right in the inferno diablo fight, or final boss fight in the expansion.

I just had such a sad moment when I realised that this is my priority order as well.
