Just an idea but I think it's time to put a stop to outrageous pricing on the gold AH. It's just out of hand. I've seen new legendary items up for 2 Billion gold. First of all, that won't sell because nobody that plays the game in a legit fashion could afford it. Second of all, the person that can afford it most likely doesn't need it. EPEEN is no excuse.
The average player may go to the auction house after saving up gold and buy a new weapon for 10-15 Million because it increases DPS by 2000 or add a good amount of LoH but listing a weapon for 100 Million + just because it has a socket and 40% crit dmg is ridiculous. The gap between good items and great items is way too large.
I propose that we should come together and start listing items at lower prices as a whole to bring the market down. I personally have already cleared Inferno on my Monk and leveled all 5 classes to 60 so I'm not in any rush to buy many upgrades but I know that there are a lot of people out there that need upgrades to clear inferno.
Also since I list my items at much lower prices, they sell super fast and I make a good deal of gold anyway. I know that if more people lower their prices to a reasonable level I will make less gold per item that I sell but in turn the items I buy will be less expensive so I won't need as much gold. I also know that Gems aren't going to come down since they are expensive to make but every other item should.
Lets all get together and bring the prices down!!!

Based on a few replies I feel like I should add something.
All prices in the AH are relative to similar quality items in the AH but what people don't realize is that if an item were priced way too high, it will remain in the AH unsold. Then when someone finds an item and searches the AH for an item of similar quality and says "HOLY $#!T That one is selling for 100M, I'm going to be rich!", what they don't realize is that it is still in the AH for a reason. At this point yo now have multiple items of similar quality in the AH in this range which causes people to think that everything of this quality is worth this much.
Now in the next game they find something with similar stats just lower values of it. They end up thinking, "If my Godly one is selling for 100M then this one must sell for at least 50M..." This makes lesser quality items get listed for much more. Since people used the Ferrari as an example, we can use that here if this were a real life situation.
The 2012 Ferrari 458 Italia goes for $229,825 starting MSRP. It has a Verified 0-60 time of 3.3 sec
The 2012 Nissan GT-R Primium goes for $89,950 starting MSRP and has a Verified 0-60 time of 2.8 sec.
The Nissan has a better 0-60 time and better gas mileage if that's what your into. It also has much higher torque rating at a lower RPM. All in all it outperforms the Ferrari. Now in a real life economy they don't price it to match or price it higher than the Ferrari even though it performs better.
I started gearing up my barbarian about a month ago, and have since invested somewhere in the range of 80 to 120 million gold for his current gear. The idea that "no one legit" can afford those prices is simply wrong. Plenty of people are sitting on millions (and yes, in a few cases, billions) of legitimately earned gold. Just because you cannot afford them does not mean others cannot.
Items are worth what one is willing to pay for them. In fact, I don't even know why I have to explain this, but I will anyway: you can't reasonably expect every item to be in your price range for affordability. No one would ever buy middle-of-the-pack items if they could spend the same amount on a truly elite item.
I'm not sure how you plan to bring prices down (a virtual picket of the AH or something?), but if my items are selling for 50+ million gold, you damn well bet I'm going to keep selling them for that.
Try walking into a Ferrari dealership and demand they lower prices so you can upgrade your Honda. Let me know how that goes, k?

While I generally agree with everything you have said, you have slightly missed the point. You say you spent 80-120 million gold gearing your barb, whereas the OP is complaining that a very good (not even godly) weapon alone now costs somewhere around 100 million gold. Personally I think you can get them for less if you are willing to be very patient with bidding and not seeking instant-gratification buyout-only auctions, but the OP does have a point. GAH prices for very good items have steadily risen as the top few percent of players become wealthier and wealthier, especially those that got to Inferno very quickly after launch.
It's very intimidating and overwhelming to new and very casual players, both of which have very limited options for ever making enough gold to start buying the excellent gear needed to farm efficiently enough to make enough gold to buy the excellent gear..........
EDIT: I should add, as one of those very casual (and very broke) players: any attempt to "fix" prices will fail, especially when you are talking to a small community of players on a fansite. It is what it is, so the OP, myself, and others just have to deal with it and find ways to succeed anyway.

You said you spent 80 - 120 million for his gear..... That isn't 100 million on 1 item like I am talking about. If you upgraded 12 pieces for 120 million that averages 10 million a piece. That doesn't include gems you may have purchased so you aren't spending 50 to 100 million per piece either. 10 million a piece isn't unreasonable if the gear warrants it but as an example, the Skull Grasp ring that I am wearing on my Monk. I was lucky enough to find it but when I searched the AH for one with similar stats they were going for 300 Million. It's an awesome piece of equipment but 300 million for 1 piece of gear is crazy.
Sounds great, BUT the problem runs much deeper than the effect the visitors of Diablofans could have, I think.
Only 116 people took part in the Boston Tea Party.
The Boston Tea Party didn't win the war, it only ignited the flame. Also, silly comparison...
Prices will even out eventually. People can post ridiculous prices if they like, they simply won't sell. When they don't sell the price will be lowered, if it wasn't lowered enough... well, around and around we go. Of course prices are inflated right now, it's the shiny new thing. It will fade.
The sad thing is, topics like these get created because of a legitment problem. However, players who are either new to the game or don't play as often see this topic and reinstates this opinion and it affects their gameplay. The day of patch 1.0.4 I bought my WD a complete set a gear for 4 million, 1 million was spent on a 959 dps weapon. I am now working my way through Act 3 with relative ease.
Some builds, may require 10 million gold per piece to function properly. I just tend to shy away from such builds and look for ways to cut corners.
However, this doesn't work for others. Reinforced opinions from others by seeing topics and discussions like these only fuel the fire. I hope that more people explain that you don't need perfectly itemized equipment to get through the game.
Dude, that's like complaining that a Ferrari cost $500k and should be lowered to affordable levels....It's a free market, people can charge what they want. Eventually the prices will come down to equilibrium levels.
You don't need an end game 100m+ weapon to faceroll Inferno. So it isn't about "needing" anymore. Now it's about "wanting." And wanting nice stuff will always be expensive.
I'm so tired of seeing people complain about this. As someone with great gear I have nothing to spend my money on than the top of the line gear. That being said, the upgrades are always quite expensive. That is why the VERY top of the line gear is worth so much. Don't claim that the new legendary (Manticore with 2 sockets and high crit damage) isn't much more than a 2k dps upgrade. That upgrade would be massive. 15-20k more damage to someone with excellent gear. With great gear (high crit on a DH), the crit damage improves damage that much more.
As far as weapons go, I just posted a couple weapons up today that I had previously purchased for 50-75million each for lower than 30million. I was lucky and found a new 1h axe this morning with 966.4 Damage, over 100 strength, 97% crit, and a socket - thus I'm selling off the old one. I'm sorry but what do you want? My weapon that allowed my WW barb to stomp through Act 3 for 25million is too much for you? That one is on you then. As someone who made all their gold legitimately, mostly via crafting and looting, I am tired of this complaint.
I do not understand where you expect gold to go. Gold has no large removal in our economy. AH cuts are hardly enough. Not enough when you factor in repair costs which casuals complained about so much that they reduced them AGAIN. So considering that gold never leaves the economy, and that items never leave the economy, the only result can be high prices for the top tier items as the best players spend a lot in order to obtain them, and a trickle down item flow when they give their hand me downs to the next tier of players and so forth until bad players get good items for pennies compared to their original values.
tldr: Auction house is functioning normally. Not everyone should get the best gear.
RE: 100m for total gear vs. 100m for a single item - As I said, you cannot expect items to all fall in a perfect price range for purchase. Items that are truly rare will demand an outlying price range. This is the nature of all markets and economies. This isn't even econ101 stuff, it's basic logic.
Certainly there will be players who put up an item that isn't even close to what its realistic potential value is, but those are actually pretty few and far between, and at a minimum they will self-correct very quickly (because wasting 10% of your sell space is dumb).
I'm not claiming to be an expert at the D3 market valuation bit, but being in an upper eschelon of gear, I can say I'm pretty well versed in what sells for how much (in a ballpark figure); I've sold several items for double digit millions, up to over 50 million for a single item. There's a reason those items go for that much, regardless of how many people bemoan the fact (how many have you found with those stats, or even close to those stats, eh?).
Eventually those prices will come down, or you'll sell enough stuff to buy one, or a combination of both. Either way, complaining about it won't fix the problem. It's a free market, it fixes itself.

had to quote this so i could even read it
Oi, yeah, that was brutal. I managed to hotkey something on my keyboard that enabled superscript. Between that and the craptastic nature of Internet Explorer and the proxy at work, it took a few minutes of hairpulling to figure out.
i for one dont see why Blizzard could not "cap"prices for items on AH,like for example weapons 25M,offhands 10M,ring 10M etc...
not only would this make a lot more people happy in getting that feeling"i can farm for 20M gold",and not like its going now....this is getting ridiculous.
I agree that prices are ridiculous, but capping prices wouldn't solve the problem. Nobody is going to sell a new legendary Skorn or a good Witching Hour for 10-25m. People would stop using the AH and would just trade items, and something like Brimstones or Star Emeralds would become the new currency. The problem is that there's no use for gold right now - and with crafting dying a quick and ugly death with the latest patch, there'll be even less gold leaving the economy. What's needed is a viable, attractive additional use for gold - adding sockets, being able to reroll a specific stat on an item, being able to 'lock in' desirable stats before crafting something... a use for gold that makes people want to have it, and makes them think "would I rather do THIS with my gold, or go to the auction house..." Until we get something like that, prices will continue to inflate, and capping prices would just make people find alternative methods of selling their items.
Just an idea but I think it's time to put a stop to outrageous pricing on the gold AH. It's just out of hand. I've seen new legendary items up for 2 Billion gold. I dropped 10 mil on a 1150 DPS 45% windforce. I see no problems with that.
You are raging like a child over a video game and pricing that is obviously not realistic. Yeah, I see the 2 billions and the 1 billions, and the even the 500 millions. Yeah, they aren't going to sell, why cry about it? What is your crying going to do other than to make other people come here crying about it and add yet another crybaby thread to these boards. Something these boards really don't need.
Economics 101. Nothing is worth more than the buyer is willing to pay. People listing shit that high are either using the AH as extra bank space, something I have done in the past, or they are stupid enough to really think it will sell. In the long run, if they are listing it to sell it they will eventually have to drop their price to a point where someone will buy it. Coming on unofficial forums QQing because you can't afford something is not going to change a thing. Its a waiting game. Within the next 3-4 weeks you will see the prices on the new legendaries drop, this is guaranteed. The longer you wait, the lower the prices will get, this is as true in D3 as it is in the real world and has been happening since release when 1k DPS blue weapons were selling for 50mil on the AH.
Sounds great, BUT the problem runs much deeper than the effect the visitors of Diablofans could have, I think.

Now imagine, just for a second, that you got the most awesome legendary weapon dropped, and thought "fuck this shit, I'm pricing it at the moon". And then either a gold-farmer or someone who spend some dollars to get billions buy it. Holy crap, suddenly from day to night you're a freaking D3 billionaire and can buy whatever you want and equip as many characters as you want
If I looted something that simply isn't on the market right now (and has almost perfect rolls), I'd definitelly put an outragerous price on it. Sure, nobody will buy it, but if someone ever does, suddenly I'm very rich
I sympathize because I am in a similar boat...but Blizz will never limit greed in the game. Society is greedy enough as it is; make it anonymous and it compounds the issue. It won't change and Blizz won't interfere. It's one of my outlying issues with the game. I don't think middle of the road gear is common enough and I think people are too greedy about that gear on the AH.
I think Blizz should manage the AH around the OP items. That worked just fine in D2 and didn't hurt the "economy". Let more of the STR 11 and 12 or hell, even 13 and 14 drop and keep 15 and 16 very rare.

There is nothing wrong with dropping 10m on a weapon. 10-15m for something like that is reasonable. What I am saying is that people listing things for 100m is ruining the AH economy. I added more to my post based on some replies that explains this a little better. Sorry if there was some confusion.
You see, that kind of thinking is the very reason why I can't buy any decent gear. If I were to find a really good drop that I wouldn't use myself or hand off to a friend, I would list it depending on price, but cap it somewhere reasonable, like 20 million gold. If I did the RMAH, I wouldn't invest anymore than $20 on any given item, and even then it is a bit much because they are digital items that have no existence outside of Diablo III.
That kind of thinking is the reason why you can't buy best of the best- it has nothing to do with landing decent gear. Saying you can't get decent because it's overpriced is such a farce. People are unhappy that they all can't have the BiS items without selling their souls. Tough. Capitalism isn't going anywhere.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd
Close thread.
If I looted something that simply isn't on the market right now (and has almost perfect rolls), I'd definitelly put an outragerous price on it. Sure, nobody will buy it, but if someone ever does, suddenly I'm very rich
