Now, I'm talking about back when people used these as a currency.
My first SoJ came from a cow game I entered and was already finished.
I was running around holding alt and laying all by itself was a unique ring.
I was so excited, Cain confirmed it was the ring I was praying for.
I remember going into random "all for soj" games just to show it off.
Someone actually gave me my first SoJ. I was so happy I immediately went and got a Ballista for it. Then I was sad again since I didn't have a SoJ to buy something else.
Barely remember this but I got my first SoJ when I traded some sort of rare shield for one back in 1.09 and then had it scammed when I joined a game recruiting for a clan that told me to download a program to join their chat channel. The program was a simple macro that opened your inventory and threw all your stuff on the ground, the SoJ was probably worth 100x more than the rest of my gear but I didn't even know I think I was more upset about losing my trang gloves!
If you want to brute force it, Andariel nightmare.. or just patch back to Vanilla 1.06 and gamble it. They were sooo easy to get, I've never really understood, how they could remain THE currency, especially since they've been duped to Oblivion. But as those bad guys also dominated the market come LoD, it didn't change. And it got even worse, when Blizz reduced its legitimate availability. Like the desert would run out of sand..

It was a better currency than gold, which was way more abundant than SoJ at first. Not really even sure why exactly SoJ became the currency either, maybe because it was usable by so many builds, not really sure!

It was also a better currency than player ears or healing potions. It had it's time during vanilla, when it was easily obtainable, yet incredibly useful. But come LoD, _anything_ new would have been better, because of the fact, that masses of illegal sojs were on the market. But, those evil people, who produced them and bullied the market with them(destroying an amazing game in the process) also forced their "established" currency on the community in LoD.
It was ludicrous, who on his right mind would allow his competition such a head start? Instead of resetting the economy and rendering all those duped sojs useless, they(the normal players) insisted on keeping their little fortune they made in vanilla by keeping sojs as the currency.
I was pretty pissed at the start of LoD, when the first big items(Windforce etc) sold for ~40 -still illegal- rings. Could have been sold for potions as well. Enough ranting, you should have gotten the point by now.

Ballista was my first SoJ purchase as well, back when the pierce/guided bug was still around.
Ya, I never found a soj either. Traded for a few though in my day.

40 chipped gems for a SoJ. I dont know about anyone else, but those trades made me rich, fast when the currency was all about the SoJ. Those were the good days..
My first SoJ was actually a Mephisto's Soulstone. See, I got scammed.
lol really? I know someone who told a player you can get a SoJ by catching the chicken in town but never heard of doing a switch like that with a SoulStone that sucks. Hope your luck in the game gets better!
I played and botted for years, and never got a single SoJ.

I got my first soj from a random player who just gave it to me. I found my second SoJ from a baal run (one of many runs). I put them both on my lightning sorceress, makes me feel nostalgic.

I played for probably 2 years on Ladder and never found a single one that I can remember. I traded for them many times, just because I had such a hard time finding anyone who wanted to trade for something other than the stupid rings.
Diablo II took seven solid years of my gaming life. I didn't get my first SoJ until half way through 1.09. I traded 40 chipped gems for it. And I kept doing that until I had 40 SoJs and traded those for a 1.08 WF. Which were worth more than 40 SoJs at the time. Very shortly after the .08 WF mass dupe happened, that day where you could go into just about any game and get one for free. Then came the really really bugged stuff. Ith Quark, six socket WF and junk. And thus the good ole days were over.
Since 1.10 I have found numerous of my own SoJs and two Windforces, not that they were worth anything by this time, but still worth remembering. Somewhat unrelated but I also found a 30/40/40 ethereal Deaths Fathom on East Ladder, but traded it along with the rest of my Barb-killing Orb Sorc at the end of my DII days, for WoW gold, of all worthless things. /sigh

How about you? Assuming you played back then.
