We (should) all know by now that loot is dropped for you and you alone now - a situation for which I am eternally gratefull - watching people edge in to a boss fight at the end, stop using their skills hoping to ninja-loot the drops was depressing to say the least.
I was wondering what people felt about a system where you would see when someone picked up a rare/legendary item? The way things stand now the only way to know if someone in your party picked up something good is if they tell you. I thought having their portrait flash or in the case of a legendary named item have the item name "pop" above their head for a second or two.
(tool bar hides my text when I type for some reason)
I wouldnt want someone asking me "what did you get?" everytime I pick up a blue, but I think it would be cool to know my teammate just lucked out on a legendary.
If this had to be in the game I hope it would be an option to turn on or off. I don't care what others get, if someone keeps bugging you the /ignore function will be quite handy. It would be better if the item name "pop" animation was a big turd saying you got nothing. It might be kinda funny then.
I have no issue against you I just hate the idea.

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.
There's an option to "copy-paste" an item into the chat box for everyone else to see. I suppose if your mate lucked out, he'd definitely tell you about it.
This is better than a notification popping up as well since it gives the other player a choice since he might not want you to know what he just found.

I probably should have included the idea that it was toggleable - for both the finder and the teammate. If I dont want people asking me what I got I could turn off notifications .
Well for "legendary" items don't you still need to get them identified after they drop? A loot notification wouldn't be too useful if it just showed you someone looted a legendary ring or sword, but neither you nor them actually kno what it is yet.

To put the item in the chat window you hold the shift key and left click on the item you want to be linked to chat.
I do like the idea but only if I am with friends so my vote would be to have it with a toggle to turn it off.
I like the idea that if a legendary is looted it would tell the group. It could pop up in the chat or something like "X has looted a Legendary [item slot]" since it's not identified it should just say what item type it is, such as Chest, Fist Weapon and such.
I feel having a loot display (outside voluntarily linking the item) sort of defeats the purpose of having personalized loot, let alone the RMAH. You know people are just going to whine about how you're being selfish because you want to sell it, rather than give it to them because "it's an upgrade for my alt". This can also lead to people blacklisting you, because you upset them.
If I get an item, I shouldn't be berated or influenced into making a choice whether to keep it or trade it. Personally, I think not showing the loot prevents a lot of unneeded drama and whining.

I would think it woudl be cool to have a page on in the lobby or at login where you can go and see recent cool loot that RealID friends had gotten, but having notifications in game for other peoples' loot... please no.
Let's consider that Legendaries will not be more powerful than perfectly randomized Rares by design...so it's cooler to get a perfect Rare but it wouldn't feasible for them to detect that you've looted a perfect one for your current build.
The most important reasons have already been covered.
I remember in Dungeon Siege II whenever a unique/set item would drop it would make a resounding boom when it hit the ground, clearly indentifying itself. I was always so excited to hear that sound.

I don't see why this would happen. I would never give up something that is an upgrade for someone's alt since that doesn't even make sense to do. Plus they can't know its an upgrade to their alt to begin with, since the legendary won't be identified so you can't even see the stats on it when it drops.

This doesn't sound like a bad idea, a monster dies and if a legendary is dropped everyone hears this iconic sound that a legendary was dropped but by who is anyone's guess.
And as far as blacklisting goes there will be millions of players so if a couple of people don't want to party with me because I don't link my loot, it'll be no sweat off my back. I will just leave the game and find another one.

Not everyone is logical. This wouldn't likely be an issue in a private game but anything in the game that is bad enough that people can only avoid it by not playing public games is just asking for the inevitable illogical people to annoy you. It doesn't matter that you may have the option to boot, it's another annoyance to police. If someone wants people to know that badly that they got a great item, I'm sure nothing would stop them from spamming channels with the item link (even WITH this feature enabled).

IMO, what Illythia said would happen inevitability:
Option A (no notification): Party of three goes through a a few quests, a few places, along the way one person gets a Legendary. No one knows the wiser. Only way if they got to sell it and at that point, it's a 50/50 chance the other two people will see it in the AH or RMAH or not because it's already bought out.
Option B (notification): Same party goes in, Legendary drops. At this point since they ARE VERY LOW drop rates and INTENDED to be badass; you'll whined up being asked to link for all to see. From this point I see several things happeneing:
-"Give me it, it's a upgrade for me, it'd not even of your class!" All be it noobish in saying, there will be noobs. I doudt you'll see many of these people though.
- "Hmmm, that's really cool" Every Legendary Should be cool and have a sense of awe to it, I think everyone will do this.
- "Hmmm, that's really cool"...How much you want for it?!" Like this never happened in WOW, I believe you'll see a fair amount of this.
-"Your a jerk for not giving it to me, because I can use it! *Blacklist*" I saved this one for last because, it WILL happen, but I feel it's not something to base the decision of Pop-up or no pop up, character's profile lighting up, or a rainbow to pop out the receiving character's ass.
The bigger point is not "It's not a decent idea" but having people ask you about it, slows down the game. The loot is per PLAYER, NOT GROUP. In a way, while not being a dick and saying, "It was meant for me/it's MY drop". Your character just got lucky...period and remeber, you OR the other's may not be able to even use it!
So to some up, it not a bad idea, but with the way the loot works, with the points from Illythia; I don't see a functional positive for this, other then adding a cool factor, which the Legendary dropping should be in the first place.
For me I don't care eitherway, I would just want the notification to brag that I got one(!) Becuase you can't really trust linking assuming you can relink what others had linked to you.
Are you really going to miss a Legendary drop while playing a Diablo game that you need a notification? You're undeserving of the honour!!!
Oh, you mean, Legendary notification for when someone else gains one? No, seriously. Anything that tells others anything about my drops is unwelcome in my book. Yes, even a toggle, since people won't take that into account and will demand that you toggle it on, trolling and uncooperation ensues in 50% of the games you randomly join.
