I've noticed from the gameplay trailer that there's no light radius.
The light radius was one of the most important mechanics for setting the dark mood and atmosphere in the previous Diablo games. It also adds a sense of danger because you don't know what's around the next corner, or what's behind the door.
Maybe they haven't added it because its one of those features that gets put in near the end of the development cycle, but it NEEDS to be in D3.
There is light radius, the shadows on the enemies even angle outwards from this light radius. Its just that the environment as it is is simply not dark enough for it to really be noticeable, when the character walks through some dark sections without the neon green lighting it looks really pretty awesome though. However I haven't been able to ascertain whether or not the light radius is blocked by walls etc and if it affects viewing of upcoming enemies, maybe you have some thoughts on that Murderface?
If you look closely you will see that there is a light radius. I think they added the green lighting so you could see the dungeon in the trailer.
Well after reviewing the video, I noticed that areas around the barb are slightly lighter than those far away. However at certain times, its impossible to tell, for example at 7:00 and 8:00.
At any rate, throughout the whole video, everything on screen is very visable, and the point of the light radius is to darken areas that are further away from your character, and what I saw in the video certainly doesn't do this.
Hmm yea light radius was ok.. but in the end I just increased gamma to see where I was running in D2. Sure a baba with glowing axes will glow some light as well so it is somewhat realistic I just hope it won't be so black and white as in D2.
Light radius in D2 felt pretty much artificial to me and in many areas it didn't affect much. If you have played with the 640x480 resolution.. that is what increases your heartbeat. You seriously can't see whats coming untill they are right next to u. I bet they have many ways to make the game scary hopefully better than Light Radius so it won't have to be so major deal.
There is light radius. Just very little. I am proud to say that I have map-hacked in D2 because of the horrible light radius (and for efficiency). Who knows? Maybe the game-play trailer had characters with max light radius because of rigged items.
look at 8:30-8:38 (notice the dark corner of the wall that the doorway is in as he walks past)
Also notice that there is only green light where there are lit torches.
Yeah, I did notice there was a slight light radius. But at 9:03 or at the very beginning, and many points throughout the video, the entire screen is completely lighted, I'm not sure, why the light radius is only sometimes on.
In either case, its nowhere near as prevalent as the previous games, you can always see whats up ahead, I don't think its doing its job.

Well I guess if the enviroment light is bright enough you can't see a difference in your characters glow and the enviroment glow.
I personally wasn't a too big of a fan of the light radius, I would be content is D3 didn't have one altogether. It is kinda fun not knowing what is around the corner, but more often than not I just found it annoying not being able to decipher my surroundings.
A light radius is really going to be pointless with a new revamped 3D engine and lighting system. What blizzard should be focusing on is how to use a static and dynamic real timing lighting system to give dungeons and areas of their game their own feel and ambiance.
I think the light radius was an interesting feature but I do not think it would work too well in Diablo 3.
There are a lot more details and stuff to see in Diablo 3 compared to the first two games. Having a light radius in Diablo 3 might make it harder to see and appreciate all the work they put into the dungeons.
And I personally would not want a lot of useless stuff using up my computer's resources if I can't even see it making the game run slower.
I think what they might do in Diablo 3 is make it where your character's light radius will be affected by the environment's light, such as the sun, torches, candles and possibly spells or powerups.
So if you go into a dungeon and go deep enough and you come across rooms with no candles or torches all you will have to go on will be your own light radius thus making the dark areas have a nice scary atmosphere. In this way I think light radius would be nice in Diablo 3.

That sums up how I feel about it. Using it from time to time for a specific gameplay purpose, not unlike DII.
Use your imagination, and imagine having real 3D environments and real dynamic lighting, and then imagine using those two together to pretty much create any mood, and atmosphere. The real power behind this is that you could be slaughtering tons of enemies and all of a sudden a you hear a defining roar, the candles or lights go out and then all of a sudden its almost pitch black with just the moon seeping in to provide ambiance.. a short while later a warm orangery red glow emanates from a crack in a wall of the dungeon and you are taken by surprised as the wall bursts open and you are engulfed in see of flame and bone, as the hellish hordes descend upon you lit by the fires of hell its self.
Now if blizzard is smart this is the kind of stuff I expect to see in this game. I don't want a light radius around me at all times, I want to be scared and want random events like what I described above to happen. These sort of events are a very possible likely hood.

What does everyone else think about the issue?
We cannot be sure of what graphics setting was used in the demo, nor the video card type or setting, nor how much of it was brightened so that it would show up better in a demo.
Why don't we wait for more demos, or perhaps a technical graphics programmer from Blizzard can answer these in an upcoming interview.

Petitions are bogus and invalid, when anyone can sign up multiple times using fake names. The end result is that valid concerns fail to get heard, when drowned out like this.
yes there is light radius.. but think of it this way.. if the light radius was the same as D2.. the whole graphic change would become irrelevant.. the fact that i can see the BG and huge things walking around in it is awesome.. in d2 and d1 you had light radius cuz the whole bg was pretty lame..
