Reading this part of his post, something dawned on me...one reason most are arguing about the graphics is that THEY ARE DIABLO FANS and HAVE PLAYED DIABLO. Look at it from another perspective:
As hard as it may be to believe, there are a while slew of gamers (thousands, tens or hundreds of thousands?) that have never played the game. A fair percentage have never even seen it. As an example, I polled my 9, 14, 19 year old sons, and my wife. My wife could care less, but said if she were to play either game based on looks alone, it would be Diablo 3.
My 19 year old has seen me play Diablo 2, but never played it himself. He plays war games and flight sims. He absolutely had a fit when he saw Diablo 3 trailer. " OMG dad, that is so AWESOME, when does it come out...I gotta have that!"
The two younger sons have never seen D2, but they freaked when they saw Diablo 3 and were not even impressed with D2.
And I have to admit, I played through both the early games about 5 times a piece. I haven't played either in about 3 or 4 years. I loaded up D2 when I stumbled across this site when the countdown started back in April. After the games I have been playing (and WoW ain't one of 'em, hate it) like Witcher, DDO, Oblivion and AoC, quite frankly I couldn't play it through.
Because of the graphics mainly. They just seemed...dated and old fashioned. And I consider myself a FAN of the series. I was truly psyched when there was even an inkling a new, updated version of the game was coming out.
I guess my point is this...Blizzard is trying to stay true to the franchise, as much as they can. They want to keep as many Diablo fans as they can. But there is a whole new generation or demographic of gamer they are trying to bring in to the game as well. People that are accustomed to a...for lack of a better phrase...more modern and up to date look. It is a business after all. For every hardcore Diablo fan they lose, and I hope they don'y lose any, there will be three to take their place. Like it or not, Blizzard knows what they are doing or rather, what they want to do. They aren't as successful as they are for nothing.
That argument basically states that because WoW like graphics are appealing to females (in this case your wife) young kids (in this case your two younger children) and people who never play these type of games (in this case your oldest son) Blizzard should throw what "Diablo" is in the bin and try to appeal to those demographics? Of course your kids will find d3 more exciting than d2, it looks HUGELY better visually, it just doesn't look like a Diablo sequel should.
Diablo was a successful enough without appealing to girls and young kids, and Blizzard is successful enough with WoW to not need to gender bend the diablo series. I see no reason why a d3 with similar but more "fitting" graphics would not be just as interesting.

"[Diablo1+2] obviously had the gothic look to it, but, you they weren't, they weren't very uh, very colorful games."
"We want to take dark as an emotion, rather than an actual color art choice." -Rob Pardo
"Why the hell shouldn't it be for 'kiddies', it's a goddamn game afterall." -lethlan
In my opinion, it needs more work, needs to be darker and gothic looking with more shades of gray.
Actually I don't really care about the areas' light, blue and black-dark look both fine for dungeons however I prefer black-dark as it resembles Diablo 2 far more than blue.
BUT outside areas should look far more darker!
like in this picture: http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/7807/itshouldrh5.jpg
and even more darker than that!
EDIT: Oh and of course light radius should be added, and no over-sized weapons and heads please(yes I'm talking about the witch doctor...)
As for the character design, this must be said out loud: TOO CARTOONY.
The witch doctor really looks like... trolls from WoW?Barbarian looks like some fat sumo fighter c'mon...
That is my opinion anyway, I hope Blizzard will take it into consideration.

I think the new art direction looks really good. If anything they only need to just polish the background, characters, items, weapons, etc. to have higher quality textures, etc.
I don't really get some people. You got fired up from watching few images with low quality and a pre-alpha build of D3, bravo really smart.
And you also must be blind of something if you think D3 is in any way similar to WOW. The difference is so huge even a blind man would see it.
Also did you watch the high quality gameplay demo from diablo3.com official website? -Its not even near to bright and/or cartoony as you are making it to be!
If anything the mood changes depending on what level you are at. I can't imagine someone would like a game where everything is dark. It needs to be varied and different.
So when you go in dungeon its dark, when you go to a jungle its greener, when you go in a desert its more yellowish, when you go to hell its dark and more reddish. I mean its common sense really, if every fucking level is dark then you have not played D1 and D2. Diablo series are not neraly as dark as you are making it to be!

Diablo 3 is graphically and artistically great, there needs to be variety in the game, instead of only plain and dark areas!
+Wouldn't it be better and more interesting if from a sunny beautiful day, mist starts covering the screen, rain starts falling, thunders and lightning striking and it starts to darken, instead of constant dark!?
The funny thing is this is breaking out into the same BS that happened with Fallout 3, except you're complaining when you really have no right to. Fallout went from a turn-based isometric RPG into a first person shooter with elements spliced in from every genre. You people have a beautiful game that Blizzard wasn't in any way obligated to make, done in the same relative style of gameplay as past entries, yet you have the utter gall and audacity to complain about it. God. Why not just drag the argument kicking and screaming back to its roots and compare WarCraft 2 to WarCraft 3.
Oh my god! He has two axes in WarCraft 3! And it's too dull of a green! And the gold is missing off the armbands. 3d?! What is this, EVERQUEST?! Arrrghhh PETITION!
Because it is quite simple, They dont make the game out of the kindness of there heart, they are makeing the game to make money, (and or because of the huge demand for the game) If changeing the game will get them more money, they will do it, plain and simple. However they cant know unless you say something. Hence, We some odd 20,000+ people and climbing, are speaking about it, wether blizzard choses to listen is completely there choice, as is ours to buy the finished product. Love free market and capitalizm.
yeah and i just wonder how many people signed the petition with their 4-5 email accounts and even some using spam bots to make hundreds of signings.
20.000/4=5000
So overall I'll say not more than 7000 people are unique, but rather same guys signing the petition with different emails.
From those 7000 at least 2000 people just signed it due to nostalgia and ignorance.
I mean i can create a totally absurd petition and with little bit of media and forum coverage I'm sure there will be quite a lot of signings.
Diablo 3 is not nearly enough cartoony or bright as you are representing it to be with some stupid low quality images!
+ go again over D2 and see if its really that dark, you are all forgetting the bright areas - the whole desert area, arreat summit, etc...
Not to mention that monsters like the bugs, spiders, ghosts, witches, etc... were all colorful.
Spells - frost, fire, poison were all 10x times more cartoony than D3 spells. If D2 spells had a realistic tone than elephants can fly!

have you seen how fast it's ganing votes it's strange no fans can vote that fast i can tell you 5 votes a second sometimes and it hapens almiost every time i go to view it thats not plausible.
Hasn't changed for a while, and people are going to be coming to this site and others pretty thick and fast with the recent announcements!
Go to 5:38 where he says, "We want to take dark as more of an emotion rather than actual color or choice." It was intentional for them to deviate the art direction slightly away from Diablo and Diablo II. They've iterated the art direction many times to achieve the visual appeal they've intended and I think they've succeeded. Screenshots alone do not convey the dark emotion. If you listen to the music at the beginning of the gameplay video, you'll notice it stays consistent with the Diablo ambient music.
its funny how you have just copy pasta'd what everyone else keeps saying.
You have missed the point.
WHETHER Rob DoIgiveAf*k has said it or not, whether any blizzard associate says "we don't have to use color to capture evil." I don't care if you don't have to use color I WANT YOU to use color I WANT change I DON"T want this WOW feeling CHANGE needs to be made.
It means nothing to an entire crowd of I believe 20508 Total Signatures signed to a petition to revoke the w.o.w. style of "art" or "graphics" or what have you.
WE are the mass, WE are the consumer, We are responsible for making this either a) fail or succeed.
WE MATTER, OUR OPINIONS mean Cash or FAIL so do not ignore this movement. BLIZZARD LISTEN TO THE CUSTOMER.
I do not like where diablo 3 is going and ill be there to admit it.

ha first off, this is wrong from the beginning, rob.... rob... man you've got it all wrong.. its not what you want.. its what WE want the customer, the mass, the people who run the show, who make your check so fat.
"It was intentional for them to deviate the art direction slightly away from Diablo and Diablo II."
epic fail, when +20k people sign a petition early on saying they disagree so far...
i would suggest watching this for almost everyone If you had not seen it already. it explains alot. Not saying it makes anything more or less agravateing. but over all it may enlighten some darker areas on Blizzards Idea pool
You know there's one question your should ask yourself with this type of problem: Would Blizzard North do Diablo 3 as same as Blizzard Entertainment will do?
Kinda interesting, even if it has no answer :P.
Blz don't warry about patience of us please. A real "follow up of Diablo" is much worth than "on-time diable3" to most players.
And several dead-line delay just match Blz traditional style...........:cool:
Is that how serious you want then to look like ( this is the 3D model that the in-game sprite is taken from ), this guy has plastic skin and looks funny as hell, i hope you are not serious about that cause it ain't funny
Anyone can clearly see which one is more Realistic and Gritty, your argument is just funny.
If only those who keep whining would just leave their fanaticism for few seconds and use their minds and eyes to see the fantastic work being made in D3 i'm sure we wouldn't have any whining problems at all.
man!!ive already said it many time about what is the realistic we talked here!!!!it is about the ART STYLE!!!!how many times do i repeat it that you could understand!!!!!look this artwork above, the design prototype of barbarian is coming from tibet and mogolia (the previous diablo),designed by Michael Dashow...did you have ever see a chinese dressing like this???GMB..i thought this artwork was WOW at first glance...
