The color and art design draw attention to your character and the enemies you are fighting along with setting the mood and not taking your attention away from the combat. With that said I'm fine with the graphics at this time and I expect to see them tweeked and improved during the development process.

"Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration. That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather."
I can't stand those before/after screenshots, I mean really, do you want them to make the beginning that dark? Where do you expect them to go when we get to a place thats actually supposed to be dark? Pitch black?
Furthermore, I don't think its really how it looks (obviously it should still feel evil and dark) but mainly, like Veltras said, what happens. Sure it might look a bit cartoony (I personally dont think it is, as 1. I wouldn't be able to run it if they made it too realistic and 2. Its damn hard to make it much more realistic than that...) but if that supposedly cartoony guy gets bit in half by a Living Siege Engine of Hell, thats pretty damn Diablo-like. Thats what impressed me the most about the gameplay video, sure it wasnt as dark as the other Diablos, but it looked well done and good, and the blood splatters and things like holes in the ground where the barbarian leaps or smashes really made it feel awesome.
Exactly. The gameplay itself is dark and horrific. I mean look at the animations and physics. Everything gets brutally destroyed. Even the witch doctor's firebomb spell looked so evil and twisted.
Not to mention the barb getting torn in half with his intestines strewn across the screen.
Diablo 3 does not need a light radius. Why? Because this is no longer a 2D game, restricted to flat planes. We can have enemies drop from the ceiling, break through the walls, and strike without notice. Has it ever crossed any of your minds that with a new 3D engine and real-time lighting they can convey horror and the unknown without the light radius?
What happens if your killing baddies and all of the candles or what have you blow out and all thats left is the fain red glow of eye's peering from a hole in the wall, and the dim moon light through the cracks in the ceiling. The wall bursts open without a seconds notice and you are being torn apart by a hideous beast of hell.
Please people try to use your imagination. This is a whole new ball-game, and I believe blizzard can pull it off.
I'll buy the game none the less. But I just would like to see a little tweaking here and there.

Nothing I've seen has given me any reason to complain. So it's daylight outside in one area? Big deal.
If the game was coming out next week maybe I'd be a little nervous, however even then having seen so little I don't think I'd be flipping out the way that some seem to be.
With another year to go, perhaps longer, I'm sure the game will be polished to demonic perfection.
I Don't think darkness should really be changed. They kept the most important aspect of Diablo 3 being the camera angle. Ive played Diablo 2 since it was out and i have no problem with darkness. I don't see what the huge fuss is about. If you like playing a dark game wait until its nighttime in your room and don't turn on any of the lights..
i like diablo the way it should be, dark and gloomy, the only reason why d1-d2 was worth playing was because of its dark aspect, remove that and then you remove the re playability and fans that actually brought the series to life
Before I give constructive criticism, I would like to say that I loved the monsters art style, but my I have 2 problems with the game so far.
First, the environment. It is very imaginative, but it lacks the grittiness of the "old cellar" style that I loved in Diablo 1. The outdoor environment. I'm pretty sure that the jungles grass and trees were a substitute for the demo (hopefully), but I would like to see a realistic jungle. Real weather, real grass, trees that blow in the wind etc.
Second, the sounds. Now I know you will improve the sounds of battle, but I am a big fan of ambience. Take the Amazon River for example. There are tons of animals, bugs, running water, and miscellaneous noise that gives it the jungle feel. If you could incorporate that into the background, it will make a world of a difference.
In conclusion, more in-depth detailed art + real life background noises = Realistic game.

What is normal? Normal is a concept that everyone or a majority of people are the same or similar. However, we know that everyone is unique. If everyone is unique, then everyone is different. If everyone is different, then everyone is weird. If everyone is weird, then everyone is normal.
Yea guys lets make it so that areas that are supposed to be light simply don't exist and all we see is dark environments and don't get bored with it at all, and have nothing to contrast actually dark places with. Sounds reasonable to me!
For starters the gameplay looked awesome in the video and I am very excited the game is coming out.
I remember going into the dungeon of the first Diablo and being scared. There was a dead and bloody guy in the entrance and as soon as I entered it was so dark that I heard the enemies before I had a chance to see them. The music also set the mood.
Many may disagree with me and like the graphics the way they are or want it to be always dark and scary.
I personally don't mind if some levels or areas are colorful and interesting. I just want that Scary, Gothic, and Dark feeling to be major part of the game.
From the demo there was know light radius. Which in my opinion is an important part of Diablo. I am personally fine with a good balance of areas or levels that use light radius (what ever that balance is, I don't quite know exactly).
Great thread, I really hope blizzard addresses our concerns in some way. And as for the poll, definitely too cartoony and unrealistic. Simply making it darker will still leave disproportional environments and objects.
Disproportional? The Barbarian is supposed to be like 8 feet tall, keep that in mind when you say disproportional.
I think the only true way to know blizzard's intentions at this point is to try and get them to release screens of other dungeons and areas in the game, and compare those. For all we know there could be entire sections of the game that are dark and Gothic in nature, and well if this is such a big priority for everyone then maybe we should see something officaly from blizzard.
I must admit, I do want to see horror, dark, and evil in this game, I don't mind the color at all as long as it is conveyed disturbingly. The screens and footage we have seen so far though has not convinced me that blizzard is making everything bright and colorful. I think that is a conclusion people are jumping to no matter what the reality of the matter is based on that footage.
You can't really fault Diablo fans for wanting dark and dreary environments, but at the same time I fear if everything everywhere is dark and dreary thats just boring. Contrast between areas of light and dark are key. the difference between fresh fruit and rotten.
I've been a long time Diablo fan. Played the **** outa all of em. So i totally understand where the outrage comes from in art direction. However i truly enjoy where it is in D3. I think it looks gorgeous as is and truly like a piece of art. So yes, I voted that I like it. I wouldn't say it is perfect, but its deffenetly great. I must say though, in regards to the post above me with the "what it looks like/what it should be" pics that the redone work on the right gives me a much more familiar feeling closer to what D2 and 1 were, but it dosnt change my stance as the new work imo is a nice change, change is something i like.
I'm quite happy with the art design at the moment. Though, it's very hard too critique the art when we've only seen 2 environments so far. We need to see several more environments, exteriors and interiors, to justify a complete redesign of the art style. I'm still open-minded, but have to say graphics looking great so far.
Another point:I think Blizzards' got the gore factor just right . Diablo 3 has to be gory regardless of what the graphics look like.
After hearing the reason why they chose a more colorful approach to the art style, I support their decision 100%. I don't think it's a bad choice. They'll never be able to make everyone happy.
Also, I'm sure not every area will be as colorful as the one we saw.
Please, make it a bit more darker, grittier, and please show that it is a Mature game - as it is, it could probably pass for Teen rating. Please Diablo developers, darken the gameworld a bit - make the game look like the Concept art is all I'm asking. The lightning, and colors just need to be changed a bit is all... it really does feel like a Warcraft game right now. I understand it is in a very, very early stage, so I'm pretty optimistic that Blizzard will know what to do.
THough i think we dont know enoguh, and iloved what we saw at WWI, i can also agree that some places say the dungon's should be a little darker, there are places that i wish be more jagged and realistic, also mabey some tech upgrades, asy water reflections, better shadows.
To make my first post short. All of the edited pictures that people are showing as what they feel it should look like just look drab and washed out.
I mean, if it's really necessary that you want it darker... swap out your video card for a Voodoo3, dig out that old CRT in your basement and make sure you keep the brightness/contrast turned down.
In no way shape or form are any of us in any position to make statements along the lines of
'Look how much better I can make it in 10 minutes in Photoshop! You should so hire me I will boost sales 300%!!!'
This is DIABLO 3 guys!!! We've waited for it for nearly a decade! I highly doubt they'll take our baby and turn it into World of Diabloquest 3.
