Diablo III PvP Matchmaking
With the introduction to the RMAH, some players have wondered how it will effect PvP. Bashiok hits the forums giving some more information on the matchmaking system. The system will be using Elo system.
More specifically, based off of your win/loss record. It's not dissimilar from the matchmaker found in StarCraft II, which is based off of the Elo system used for Chess championships. Your win/loss and who they were against determines a 'skill rating', which is used to match up against other players of a similar rating. The intent is to get an even/fair match. Regardless of any individual factors like build, gear, or player ability, you'll find some equilibrium where you're facing off against players that you're about as likely to beat as you are to lose. If getting better gear raises your abilities then you're simply matched against players of a higher rating. Changing builds or just getting better at PvP could have the same effect. But regardless if you move up or down you're ultimately still netting around a 50/50 win/loss as you're always matching against similarly rated players.
Excellent...some attention to PvP. Hoping to pick your brain on further specifics, if you'll allow me.
- Will players be able to gamble on matches?
- Will teamplay still be allowed, taking into the same level of aggregate matchmaking as SC2 currently does? - Just how far out are we? Is the team hopeful for a 2012 release?
I don't want to squash any excitement about PvP, because we think it's going to be a lot of fun, but a lot of the details are still in flux. We're focusing on 1.0.4, and once that's behind us we'll be a lot closer to sharing some more concrete details on the "PvP patch" as they solidify.
Umm... that rating system wont work. You can't use ratio, because someone fighting harder opponents will have the same ratio that someone fighting weaker opponents will have. It would be like pairing up professional baseball players against little leaguers simply because they have the same team batting average and era. It's not a fair fight.
Oh no, it's not based on ratio. Look up the Elo system, I'm sure there's a wiki that can explain it better than I could.

Guild Wars 2 Beta Key Giveaway
Need a quick vacation from the demons of Sanctuary? Well, you're in luck. Curse received 50,000 Guild Wars 2 beta keys (25,000 for North America, and 25,000 for Europe) for ArenaNet's final beta weekend, scheduled July 20-22. We will be giving out our keys - free! - from July 9th through July 11th. On July 9th, only Curse Premium members will be able to get beta keys; however, Curse will open up the giveaway to everyone on the 10th (12:01 am PDT).
Premium members get first shot at the codes, in addition to the usual benefits of Premium - an ad-free experience, Premium giveaways, discount programs, and more! Keep in mind, these keys will become available for anyone - Premium or not - to obtain on July 10th.
All of those are bug fixes. What did you guys expect? It's just something they can release earlier instead of waiting to insert them into 1.0.4 which will likely take some time considering they're changing MF mechanics and revamping all Legendary items...
when a patch only changes a letter, it will simply be a very small patch that fixes bugs and maybe gets some small systems ready (like RMAH commodities for example)
anyways you know how stuff works, ppl always want more than a single letter in the patch ... the fact is that ppl are still waiting for something that didnt come even in 1.0.3 ...
Im still waiting until this turns playable ... Im not flamming, dont get me wrong, I rlly wanna play, but I have no fun atm
there's plenty of things that can be changed without requiring a major patch or weeks of testing which apparently they don't bother doing
I'd be more inclined to take your opinion seriously if you weren't being vague.
Interface changes to the AH ; they had this in development before, and i can hardly imagine it requiring weeks of testing to add one more option of searching or what not.
The 99% sure to come in 1.0.3 of being able to compare shit on AH - Did not make it. Just hotfix that in? If it's 99% sure, it can't be like they just can't put it in, and it's not something you need to ULTRA TEST before either.
Speaking of Bugs - How about hot-fixing the waller bug? Where mortar still shoot at Melee in strange curves because of Walls being recognized as you are far out of range, hmm?
These are things that are actually really f'cking annoying, don't require weeks of testing and really does break the immersion of the game, and further more just serve to be rage inducing because it's such small issues that i repeat, DO NOT REQUIRE weeks of testing, just a f'cking fix.
No joke. There's nothing wrong with bug fix patches but how about they actually fix the bugs that matter then?

Are you a game developer? Do you manage complex systems? How on earth do you think that a change to the collision detection system (waller fix) doesn't require extensive regression testing? How do you think that a change to the interface which requires a totally new UI to be built doesn't require a regression pass on all Pri-1/Pri-2 Auction House test cases, as well as usability and accessibility tests because it's a UI change.
Don't talk with such authority if you don't really know what you're talking about.
There's nothing wrong with bug fix patches but how about they actually fix the bugs that matter then?
...this.
You have to understand what I said Maka. It's that _these_ bugs can fixed easily, and instead of Blizz pushing them far away into 1.0.4 they just release them now, because they're already done with. It would be a waste to not have them patched in when they're completed code. A waste for both the developers and the gamers.
When the bug fixes _we_ want get done they'll surely be patched in as well, but I suspect most of them will be in 1.0.4 or (hopefully not) in the hotfixes/letter patches after it.
Don't get me wrong. I still have the Day 1 bugged achievements which are also affecting a lot of my meta achievements and it's really annoying. Or the melee Mortar bugs or IAS on some legendary gear and just many others. But you can't just yell for these to get fixed and expect that to help the process of fixing them.
Re-read what i stated please ; They had the very format of which the AH would obey to, already in a earlier form of development. Assuming that has not gone to be collecting dust somewhere, i can LOGICALLY assume that it is not hard to make this change - And it was also in response to a person who actually went to mock another user for being Vague, and now when i am not being vague for that person, i am getting attacked by pitchforks.
And how i know that it does not require extensive testing with the waller bug? Because they already did increase minimum range of the mortar, how hard it is to actually have a thing FUNCTION as it is supposed to, in contrast to writing me off as if i cannot speak on this forums with authority? The authority i can speak for, is what i paid for - That is a authority you cannot question. And when i payed for D3, it did not say "Littered with bugs".
It is in fact only a BAD thing, so don't make me have to re-evaluate my authority when i am the customer - I paid for this shit, if it's broken - It's to get fixed, the customer is always right.
And no, i do not manage Game systems, i am as a matter of fact a customer who just wants his moneys worth - And that goes above any white knighting you might do on a forum, because at the end of the day, I paid money for a product, that product is to work, if it does not, they are guilty to fix this - because the product cannot do anything but reflect what is advertised.
Hi, I'm a programer and I can tell you simply adding a number to a value of a skill dose not 'fix' the problem in this case for mortar. The bug lies within the waller (or some other skill) and it's effects with targeting and then carrying over the target range into it's other skills (in this case mortar). When they made the change to mortar and it's minim range that was an easy fix witch got changed really quick.
Earlier form of development was not that long ago, it was called beta, and I was in the entire beta testing and you won't believe how many things changed. Just because something is planned or was in-development dose not mean it will make it into the game. Things like the AH is a very complex system and the database and processing that is calculated and served with the amount of data is simply staggering to say the least and I work with databases. It dose take a bit more than one person who never sleeps in a basement office to make changes to a system that is stressed already from the amount of abuse it gets
Yes you did pay for a license to play the game but I'm sure you didn't read the EULA and TOS witch include statements about bugs and fixes. New games have them all the time. If they where perfect on release it would be nothing short of a miracle. Even console games have patches to fix things on day 1. What you pay for is a license to play the game and agree to their rules, and some of us don't like that or agree on how it 'should' work but that's what we give up to play this game. It's like driving. We want to go fast and not have to stop, but we have to follow the law and that is what we agree to while we drive.
For the comment of 'the customer is always right', this again is not the case. We bought the game as is and as it evolves into what ever it will end up being. We should be grateful that blizzard even takes the time to listen to us, let alone makes fixes and changes from our direct feed back. If only we had more companies that listened to it's customers as much as blizzard dose. Now I'm not saying that they are the best company ever, they have their own share of flaws, but it's a lot better than trying to get someone like apple to release information about their upcoming releases, god forbid our feed back.
Not coming at you with pitch forks and torches. No need to up in arms. We, rather I guess myself, just trying to help you understand the other side of the coin with out the rage. Am I happy about the current state of the game? Absolutely not, but I'm trying to work with it until it changes again.
i got a guild wars betakey but i have no idea where to use it or download the game, anyone knows?
The link to where you receive the Beta key also has instructions on where to go, what to do and when the Beta events you'll be able to play will take place.
