Alright, so I don't think this subject has been touched yet in regards to Diablo 3. Are we expecting to see mercs again??! If so, how is that gonna work. Can you have more than 1 merc? AN ARMY OF MERCS?? Maybe you could even hire some rogue demons at your side...maybe some angels too.
I believe way back in the beginning it was mentioned a few times that we will be enlisting the help of numerous NPC's, and I think I remember hearing something about mercenaries, but it was a year ago. Damn, time flies...
Actually, i believe this has been touched upon. I don't remember where, but it was.
But in regards to merc armies, i really really really really really really really doubt the will add merc armies, let alone mercs at all.
From what i've seen and heard about Diablo 3, the game is too easy as is. It kind of reminds me of Dota and how the hero is 100x more powerful then the creeps.
Yeah, I like the idea of having somewhere between 3-5 mercs, but not how they were in DII. You can't add gear to these and they are pretty much just distractions, AKA low hp, decent damage.
But I would still like to see a sidekick (bad word usage). Someone who takes the place of DII merc, where they follow you for a long time, lvling and upgrading as you go, and they will have a small inventory that can store items. I think adding full gear to them would be necessary too. The reason I think they will need full gear is that once they die, they are dead, and everything they have on them or in their inventory is gone for good. You have to go and buy another one (not cheap) and outfit them with new gear.
A couple of things this brings to the game. 1. It gives the player an important choice that if they want to use a merc, it makes the game easier, but there is a high risk to go along with it. You should be afraid to lose the "Sidekick", due to the high cost. You should need to protect them instead of like DII gameplay where if you lose a merc, you just keep going until you hit a waypoint, and then buy one when you get to town. The only important thing about mercs in DII was for boss battles.
If the mercs are fairly expensive, it would add more meaning to gold in addition to an interesting way to change gameplay a bit. Maybe Blizz could go as far as counting a "Sidekick" as another player in the game, causing more drops. As for increasing enemy HP, I'm not sure, it could go either way. If enemy HP increases, it defeats the purpose of a merc, but if it doesn't the enemies might be too easy.
If there are mercs, I'd like to see it done sort of like Fallout 3 where you can't just hire anyone, you actually have to earn their trust / meet certain prerequisites (based on who you are or how you play). Of course there'd still be some that you could just hire (or that would just join you regardless of who are).
I always found that touch of realism interesting in that game.

That would be pretty tedious unless:
A) You actually cared about these merc's (whether it be for story related reasons or side quests).
They are much stronger than the regular merc.
C) The requirements are easy to fulfill.
Restricting access to certain hired hands based on your character seems a bit much. It would be nicer to have a trust system for a merc which would dictate how much they actually cared about you (based on your character) and could have some (low trust) who just killed enemies and others (high trust) who would heal you and defend you. Letting them level up would also be pretty nice.

There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.

I don't think a merc should count as an extra player. That would be like having monster HP levels increase when you summon creatures. If you could have more than one merc (and they could be fully geared and levelled up), then I could see this happening.

I just hope these mercs have a sense of self preservation.
Also would be nice if these mercs come with their own class and skills (one that aren't accessible to any playable class). You know, like a pokemon, lol. They have their own skill trees, that can upgrade as they level up.
Yes. Because a karma-meter between an arbitrary "very good" and "very evil" is "realistic".
I don't need the sarcasm. And by the way, I never said anything about any sort of 'karma-meter'. All I said was that I wanted to see mercs react to you based on your choices in the game and make decisions about helping you in accordance with that. That is quite realistic. (Unless you think people don't make decisions based on what you're like).
I don't know as I agree with the system of having high upkeep for mercs. Say your merc dies. Well, ok, then he/she can be dead for good, but who's to say you can't grab your gear off them before you split? It just doesn't make sense to have to continually re-outfit your mercenary with new gear, but I WOULD be in favor of making it so that merc gear degrades like the player's.
I like the idea of having cannon fodder like in the first barbarian gameplay that was priceless. But then again, I also like the idea of having a unique "sidekick" with his/her own skills and all. That being said, I don't believe eliminating mercs from gameplay will bring good to D3.
What i was thinking would be cool was if you could have the original D2 LoD classes but be able to have them as mercs with (maybe) the same skills but just upgrade the effects or wtv to the level of D3
I love to have a computer-controlled companion in single player but online? Get out, please. Its even more sad when builds may rely on them. I mean, whaaat? No. Just no.
Obviously if your character depends on the merc then it kinda defeats the purpose of having one. I'm just saying its a way to broaden the gameplay a little
I know a couple things about the D3 Mercs but don't hold me to this.
1) The name was changed to Companion
2) They will have more depth than the D2 Mercenaries... such as they will go so far as to have a background story.
I don't want to go running around looking for this info, but that sums it up, aside from that they have not talked about it, next blizzcon... one of you admins that go to Blizzcon ought to ask.
I think mercs should be regular soldier types like in the game play demo but theyre dmg and health should scale up accordingly to where you are in the game otherwise they would be pointless. Also they should be smart like using basic strategies and formations
- intantry protect archers
- use healing potion/spell when hurt
- heal my allies
- when were surrounded fight in circle or back to back
- when retreating cover each other with arrows/spells
- cast spells when it strategically makes sense
- polearms and sheilds = phalanx
stuff like that you know smarter then d2 mercs run around attack whatever cant heal myself and cast spells randomly

I don't really feel Diablo 3 needs a mercenary system, but if there is one it should be a hell of a money sink, at the very least.

Things will change a lot before the final version and demo videos don't probably tell the whole truth.
About mercs.. I don't really want to see them. They made D2 already too easy and in multiplayer I'd rather CO-OP with other players than an AI.
Well in D2 at least they should since when properly geared, they can solo the game pretty much.
