So should I bother? I really do have to say I miss Diablo 3 but I'm kind of worried about coming back from reading too much posts on the Blizzard webpage.
What would you guys have to say about Diablo right now for someone who's taken a length break?
Depends on when you left, but the difference now is is comparable to LoD with D2. It's insane. If you left pre - RoS then it's almost a completely different game.
My advice though would be to wait until season two (sometime next month) unless you don't care about seasons / losing progress when they reset seasons anway.
It's still the same old same old. Yes RoS was a big improvement. But after about a month of playing. You will be geared out, T6 will become a joke. Than you will realize well Grifts are fun..until you max out the 5 most used gems, then realize the loot is terrible in them, you get no reward, can't progress any higher because everything one shots you. Leader boards offer no reward also, So unless your a huge Leader board fan and you want to be in the top 100 for no reason at all? Grifts become useless.
I have over 2k hours and yes I have got my money's worth. I will admit I play it just because " the game is fun" I truly do love the game, I love the hack and slash game play. But the core game and end game is not there. This latest patch they will be releasing is just another joke. Sadly to say, I have stuck it out for a while, but my time is coming near to stop playing until a next expansion or a huge game developing change. RoS was a improvement, but it still did not provide any serious long term game play. And when you think it does they just decide to release "Ancient Items" That are the same exact thing we have now! With just more main stat, vitality and in the end all old gear becomes obsolete, very very quickly.

Can't assume that everyone will play anywhere remotely as hardcore as you.
I have been playing whenever the mood takes me, since release. Pre-ordered both D3 and RoS. I'm not even remotely geared out. T6 a joke? My best character can handle T3. Max out the 5 most used gems? I haven't maxed out a single one - my best gem is rank 18. The highest GRift I've cleared is GR17.
It's nice that you've played over 2k hours. But do bear in mind that many players would take 5 years+ to accumulate that sort of /played time.

I hear ya, me too but I can do T5 with ease and T6 to a point (takes longer to kill and same rewards=no patience lol) Grifts do not interest me, apart from the gem upgrades, the rewards sucks worst then normal rifts and the trials suck big time (trials need to go, waste of time)
Some of the things in upcoming Patch makes life easier and the Ancients will help me finally make T6 a breeze (my main goal) I play mostly now just to accumulate mats.
Still, there are worst things to do to idle my spare time away when I am not working.

If you can't clear t6 within a week of gearing right now, you are doing something very wrong. You can craft gear and troll T6???
I'm not trying to be a dick here or anything. Really not. But I don't know what your game play style is, but getting gear from crafting and kadala is very easy. T6 is defiantly doable very quickly. Once you have a full set t6 becomes even more of a breeze. How many hours do you have?
If you guys want to send me your Bnet profiles, I would have no problem giving you guys some pointers and help improve your gear and builds.
And that 2k+ hours is from since D3 was released that is going on 3 years now. Which if you think 2k is a lot haha I am way behind of a lot of other players that are 1000's of hours in front of me.

I will put it this way, there is too much pessimism around Diablo in the forums.
We all love Diablo and want what is best for the game, in all fairness even though the development can be slow and the patching process is not the best, Diablo 3 RoS is a very good game and you will get your money's worth for sure if you enjoyed the combat in the game.
Alot of viable classes, Good amount of builds to play around with if you don't wanna go for ranking on leaderboards.
I enjoy doing T6 runs and chilling and doing Greater Rifts once in a while and for that almost every class has few builds and they are fun.
So if you liked D3 before, RoS is good and you should get it.
This question comes up all the time, and the answer is always the same. I don't know. That's the only answer anyone could give you.
It's like you asked which ice cream should you buy, vanilla or chocolate. We don't know. We have no idea what your tastes are.

Well that right there was your first mistake, sir. Don't go there and expect anything but a bunch of fucking dickheads getting off by upsetting other people. The last time I ever even thought to take a D3 hater there seriously was when I saw a player post "Game sucks. Bad game is bad".....then I looked and saw he had 737 paragon seasonal and another 600+ non-season. ....and he had just played that day.
It all comes down to what you, personally, want out of a videogame of this nature.

I'd say it depends on what you really like in a game.
The combat in D3 is, in my opinion, vastly superior to any of the other ARPG's I've played recently (Path of Exile being the most recent). That said, if you prefer strong character progression and permanence in the choices you make, Diablo may not be the game for you, and you may not enjoy it as much.
As of now, there are plenty of T6 viable (where viable means relatively efficient) builds for most of the classes, and more become possible after every patch (or at least more variants). Unfortunately that's not true for greater rifts, but in an infinite scaling game mode, builds will always gravitate to one or 2 that are just better at dealing damage and surviving.
Overall, ROS was a big leap forward for D3, but it didn't change some of the core design decisions that may have caused you to leave. If you enjoy crushing monsters for loot though, I'd say it's probably worth another shot, especially in a week or so, when patch 2.1.2 comes out, and changes up a few things.
