I've always played ranged characters in my gaming career and the only time I went for melee was when I played feral druid a few months before quitting WoW.
After seeing stats of inferno, or even seeing how quickly you die to random things it seems like melee is more unforgiving then it is challenging.
I'm trying to put my faith in Blizzard to make sure Barb will survive, but still, after playing feral druid I'm traumatized :|..
Anyone has words of comfort \ encouragement before I get cold feet? ;x
The things in inferno are scared shitless of melee as well, they just don't tell you.
But I'm with you on this one, I don't like melee characters much.
But hey, what's the worst that can happen? Your PC won't box you back. Just run in screaming and punch things or hit it with an axe/sword/whatever is handy.
I think it'll be fine. Jay Wilson has indicated that there are some mechanics ingame that are punishing to ranged, but not to melee, so it will balance out.
That there is fear in facing inferno is a definit good thing though

The thing I'm scared most about, I think, is that i'll have to be armored to the teeth only to step into inferno, where ranged classes could "get away with" having less gear, since they can kite, and just not get hit at all. So they can slowly but surely go through inferno while I'm stuck in hell farming just to get into it.
I think melee has a way better chance in inferno then ranged has, because of the cc reduction/immunity u wont be able to kite shit...
Just up ur elemental resistances, play with shield and be ready to have atleast one skill that uses elemental attack and u will do fine ... I promise
Pshh My Melee Demon Hunter will carve up there FACES!!!!! AND SHATTER THERE BONES It will be that awesome

This is the closest I got to a melee DH.
Having FoK and Chakrams surrounding you and placing traps and bombs.
But still.. no weapon hitting since you don't have any skill that makes you able to "use" a melee weapon.
Not every mob will be kiteable. Ranged characters will get hit. They will get less hits thou, and thats why melee characters have advantage in passive damage reduction. I don't see melee characters less unforgiving, I see Inferno less unforgiving, no matter if melee or ranged. I hope and think it come down only to a matter of preference, which is good - choose what you like to play, not what might be more efficient or easy.
Sometimes all it takes is 1 hit to die, or just 1 extra hit to die ;p
Which is what I meant by saying "Unforgiving".
Melee characters have a 30% base damage reduction. This was patched awhile ago, I'd have too look it up. Anywho JW just stated that all classes should have at least 2 defensive abilities going into Inferno. So I wouldn't count out melee cause ranged also have it just as bad too: grenadiers, teleporters, and so on and so forth.

But they did not listen to Jay interview were he basically stated that kiting/trapping/etc does not work in inferno and that one small slip up can easily mean death in inferno... honestly inferno scares me no matter what class i will play, but honestly the strongest i feel for inferno will be the barbarian because he is designed to take the punishment.

I guess it's because we have ~ a week until release, and people are for whatever reason in a rush to find stuff to complain about. This topic I actually thought would never be brought up, but figured Dfans has surprised me before.
So, are we really already worried about ranged > melee? You honestly think Blizzard hasn't balanced this for inferno? They said themselves that they have an elite 'strike team' of their best in-house gamers who's only job it is is to test inferno.
And also before this information gets even more warped; Jay did NOT say there were monsters that did more damage to ranged or anything along those lines. What he said was there was ONE affix that lobbed attacks to anything outside of it's melee attack range. Yea, it sounds like a fun mechanic to dodge as a ranged, but that's about it.

The ranged guys are going to be SUPER squishy in inferno. At the same time, they will just have to play smarter and pick their shots.
