The point of this thread is for everyone to post their thoughts on what the think are Iconic Elements to the Diablo Franchise. Also, wether or not you feel like its going to be in diablo III or not. Please, no fighting over graphics, or anything some else posts. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and you aren't going to change anyones anyway.note: these aren't always things super important to the gameplay, but things you have an emotional connection to form the games.
I'll Start.
-Isometric camera angle
-Large Swarms of monsters
-Point & Click Interface
-Unique Character Classes
-Treasure Hunting/Gear dependent gameplay
-Skill Trees (even though they weren't in diablo 1, I feel as though they completely set the standard for RPG's to follow, and it was SO important to diablo II gameplay, that I it counts.)
-The Character Sheet/+5 stat points per level
-Town Portals
-The Health/Mana Globes
-Certain Enemies (Fallen in particular)
-Pentagrams/Black Magic/Satanism(downplayed in D2, in favor of a more "Epic" Story.)
-Inventory Tetris/grid
Those last two are the only things feel are going to be missing in Diablo 3. I don't really think that either are important to the gameplay, so much as I feel like both are things that when I see, I feel like "this is diablo". They strike a certain emotional chord with me, and it makes me sad to see them go. Either way, I feel like the game will be great, but feel like it could use some of this and some of (Warning, graphic)this.
Isn't the OP asking about things that define the Diablo universe? Because most of the stuff mentioned in posts since his have been just random crap you can find in most RPGs from even decades ago. Seems to be veering too far off topic.
And, I would add something, but I think everything's been covered (most notably, The Cube).

P.S. Gear-dependent gameplay has been around for a lot longer than Diablo, too. Unfortunately, all online games are like that.
-deckard cain
-barbarians
-ppl with cool armor (lachdanan, tyrael, etc.)
-demons
-heaven/hell
-mana and health orbs
-belts
-potions and scrolls
-unlimited replay value

Yeah, I know what you mean. But to me, it is still a staple in the gameplay.
I think that if you are going to name something that wasn't present in Diablo I, you should give an explanation why you feel like it is "iconic" to diablo.
Id have to disagree with charms, useless gold, and runewords. All 3 of these arnt iconic to diablo. Diablo 1 gold was very useful. Even in diablo 2 single player. Only gold was ruined on b.net. Charms and runewords were an addition to diablo 2 that imo ruined the game. Everyone had everyone else items. I dont think they need to be added.
I didn't understand their reasoning for adding the health orbs...so that people don't mash potions? I never used potions on any physical damage character, leech all the way, and casters barely get hit enough to need to use more than 1 or 2 potions every 5 minutes or so...
I've had tough as nails characters with high dual leech needing to mash potions to stay alive in certain events.
If you have to rely on leech just to deal with bosses, that sort of removes any reason to choose any other type of gear.
Tell me if I misunderstand here, but your post seems to imply the following;
So we should be able to solo bosses without requiring leech? Or potions?
Well, yes and no. There is a single player part of the game, I assume. That's part of what the Diablo series was about. But without potions, it looked to me (from what little we saw of the siegebreaker fight) that taking on a boss by yourself would be damn impossible. But on the flip side, the people playing looked as if they were intentionally making the entire fight more difficult for themselves.
I suppose difficult but soloable boss fights would be iconic to the Diablo series.
I also think Magic Find is also unique to the Diablo Universe....
I believe you are right that, so far, only Diablo II has ever implemented a bonus to increased magical items placed on worn items. Hopefully, it will be the only game to ever implement it.
Cheers,
SmashBoy (glad his MF run days are WAY behind him)
