STOP SAYING ESPORTS OH MY GOD! I said it once as a reference on how it would be good for the game (because it would be). Get off that god damn one word. Ladder doesn't = eSports. Ladder = a place common casuals can be competitive.
~snip~
I understand that and even said in previous posts that I understand it. Does that change my opinion of wanting it in the game anyways? Nope. Pushing it towards an eSport is good for the game and even if Blizzard is pressured to make it an eSport or do anything past ladders doesn't matter. There's already pressure to make it an eSport. How about Blizz just grants us this wish and then they can go back to ignoring the PvP community. I'd be happy with that.
The reason that Blizzard is not going that way has been given, multiple times. Who knows though, with them pushing the PvP back...they might surprise us all and add some of those features. There are a lot of reasons NOT to add them, but they might.
Pushing Diablo 3 towards an eSport, however, will not be as good for the game as you think. As I have stated, it would create a divide between developing PvP content and developing PvE content. This is the reason a majority of us do NOT want to see eSport PvP in Diablo 3. It would likely destroy any idea of new monthly content updates that they talked about in the past as the resources would go towards PvP balance. It'd also very likely push back any expansion. If eSport became a large focus, we'd see a lot of abilities changing from their PvE design to a more PvP design. These are the kinds of things that the majority of Blizzard's D3 community do not want to see. We want the game to remain focused around being a hero that slays hell's minions en-mass, not around being a guy who kills hell's minions to run around and kill other heroes.
Its just not Diablo if it focuses too much on PvP and not enough on the awesome PvE content.
Wall of text is too boring in a rant. But Diablo has always been, at it's core, a PvE oriented game. I love playing PvP. It is fun. But my wall doesn't like it. /stares at whole in the wall. And I always hate it when a spell in WoW(Yes, I am doing a comparison here. But hold your horses and continue reading.) is nerfed because of PvP. At one point, the spell could be a competitive spell for PvE to stay at the top of the charts but after the nerf it is like swinging a bat into a steel wall. So I would love Blizz to either balance for only PvE or have the spells be balanced differently in the Arenas. Thankfully the runes allow for changing a spell into a PvP spell.

I don't always burn. But when I do, I use hellfire.
Sorry but I didn't read any of the comments, just some of the OP.
But from what i gathered, no one will play PvP from day one, it's something most people do at the very least after clearing normal mode.
Blizzard pushed PvP back to give the game to us a little early, it will still come, and by then maybe you haven't even reach 60.
So be patient, and please don't generalize every PvE player.
I totally agree with Elementz. I also prefer PVP over PVE, and would like to see a ranking system like that in WOW for competetive play. We'll see what comes out when the PVP part gets added, i hope they will focus their efforts on the pvp aspect of the game. (im not trolling, this is my honest opinion)
I disagree, I don't think the "majority" has that opinion at all. Infact, I think it's just an insanely vocal and ignorant minority of you that won't just shut up and let the game actually be good.
SEVERAL Polls have proved that an obvious majority of players prefer PvE over PvP in Diablo.
Diablo is a cooperative RPG that is supposed to be fun COOPERATIVELY. For example, my wife (non-gamer) played the beta... loved it... and will now be playing Diablo 3 with me COOPERATIVELY. My wife, my coworkers, and the majority of my friends that will end up playing diablo 3 will NEVER play PvP unless its in casual fun against each other.
This is not an esport... should never be an esport... and should never even be considered as a potential esport.
In fact... i think overpowered crowd control spells in CASUAL pvp is more fun than everything having the exact same effect in the end.
Sorry but I didn't read any of the comments, just some of the OP.

Hehe, I think the major complaint from PvPers isn't that D3 wont be shipping with it, it's more the fact that there is so little support planned for PvP such as ladder, duelling, ganking etc.
Apart from that, you're absolutely right.
Personally I don't mind either or. D3 was never a PvP game for me anyway, I'd much rather play Sc2 or Dota/2 and such. I do think I'll miss the casual duelling part though.
I do foresee that should Blizzard give more support towards the PvP segment that there will be tremendous amounts of tears from both sides about balance and what not. Basically nothing out of the ordinary!
EDIT: Now that I read my own post, I noticed there's a distinct lack of yellow smilies in this thread. Smile people! Even if you're not on the same page, we're still gonna play the same game, and love the hell out of it. So smile!

They've specifically said that after release, their focus will be on making finishing the arena PvP and getting it into the game. Beyond that I wouldn't hold your breath. Jay Wilson specifically said no rankings system. Blizzard's goal for PvP in Diablo 3 is a casual fun Team Death-match style Arena. Honestly, it sounds like a lot of fun.
1. Everyone is a "PVEr", so in my mind, your point is already moot.
2. NONE of the Diablo games, including this one, were EVER designed around, or with PVP in mind. It was, and is, an after thought. If you like it, cool, but let's get our facts straight shall we?
3. I might have been with you if you simply said "kinda sucks that there won't be any pvp at launch". I can sympathize with that a bit, but don't insult the way other people like to play the game, that is, the actual game... and expect any favors in return.
That's where you and I disagree though, I think you are incorrect in believing that the majority wants what you do. They don't . It's a seriously small little minority of you that are so paranoid of Esports.
The majority here is against a PvP-balanced D3. The majority on official forums, the majority on every other major fansite. Get your head out your a**.
So I am not sure why PvE players care so much that PvP people want Blizzard to back one of the biggest, if not the biggest thing about Diablo 2's endgame. PvP.
Did read most of it, but there's a line in your first paragraph that sums up my argument nicely. Note, I'm not against PvP really, but I would want Blizzard to at least keep the two separated. I know the whole comparing to WoW is getting tiresome, but there's something to take note of in the constant struggle for rebalancing skills to match both PvE and PvP that marks its lengthy history of patch notes. Lately we've seen some improvement in this with skills being split into PvP and PvE components, and consequently with PvP being enclosed in instances separate from the PvE world, making this split technically possible. I reckon this won't be much different in D3, since PvP is in a closed off arena as well, but my biggest concern, and one I guess many share with me, is that PvE's skills and character balance will be (negatively) affected by Blizzard's attempt to balance them for PvP.
Fortunately for me, and probably less so for you, Blizzard disagrees with your perspective that PvP is the biggest thing in endgame Diablo. And with them, a lot of players do.
To me, PvP is something I just loathe to do. I don't mind the functionality, but it's just a terrible terrible experience for me. To copy your math: Trading items and killing PvE stuff would ammount to 2/2 for me. PvP may be an aspect of the game to play, but it's one I just plain don't like and never have. Again, this doesn't mean it shouldn't be in the game, but your claim that the game's experience is incomplete without it, and that it's the only logical endpoint of the game's progression, is entirely subjective.
I, too, think PvP is an unpleasant experience, so this pretty much sums up exactly what I would want to say on the subject.
And when you start bitching cause now you gotta pay per month to keep up the dev paychecks, and they turn the loot game into a bunch of set item properties and these become the "best" then I shall laugh. Sicne everything is randomized There really is no way to "balance" PVP and because there is no real way to balance the PVP aspect you can't have it an esport. Esport implies it is being balanced and fair, which is nearly impossible for D3. So your whole argument is just moot. I agree PVP should be in the game it's fun and gives us somehting to do. But should they support it to the full extent that you want and are whining about? No. And there is a matchmaking system. That's how you get paired up with people. sure you won't see "gold" league like in SC2 but there is a matchmaking system and you should be happy about that.

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
Us "PvPers" aren't expecting BALANCE, we want more FREEDOM that was taken away from us (FREEDOM that we had in D2, and no not everyone's experience of PvP consisted of random public games). Since they took away the FREEDOM and tried to control PvP, they need to add certain FEATURES and OPTIONS and CUSTOMIZATION to make it right again. We want to be able to make custom PvP matches, even if that consists of battling it out in "blood moor" instead of a damn arena. The ability to fight as parties vs parties.
Right now pvp is limited to some bullshit 2v2 kill until your run out of lives crap, with no way to directly face another party (your friends) since in battle.net 2.0 social aspects have been removed from the game.
No more iron mans (and other classic fun games)
No more joining a random pub game clearing it out and having fun.
No more guild/friend/clan/random battles of 4v4 in a GM style setting.
No more challenging specific people to duels.
No more killing bots in public games (they will come in time).
Some things that could definitely be added to be an IMPROVEMENT over D2. (Very wishful thinking).
Obviously PvP games that consist of 6-12 people, we don't care if it is too chaotic and you can't tell who everyone is, but let it be an option, let us figure it out, let us make the choice if it is "too chaotic."
Statistics - Stuff like kills - damage, burst damage - most kills in a row stuff would be neat. Public/Private, people who are good can obviously show off, people who are bad just mind their own business, no harm done.
Edit, and for everyone who thinks we are trying to turn the damn game into an "ESPORT" you are full of shit whiners, pretty much every game on the market - even runescape - has better PvP than what is currently incorporated into D3, and don't deflect by telling us to "PLAY A DIFFERENT GAME" for something so fundamentally simple that needs to be in the game.
December, 2012 Headline:
"Blizzard fights angry PvPers by telling them to go play LoL."
As for the current state of the arena - it's in revision, and they haven't really said what they are planning. Look at some of the 11th hour changes going on with PvM in recent patches. If they are making major revisions in the content that will be ready for release, then the changes for the delayed PvP arena could be pretty serious.
As for "no more entering a random game and clearing it out and having fun" - that's very one sided fun. How much sense does it make for mid level characters to put up with levels 60s coming into their game and hunting them down? And how fun is it to even do that? There's generally not a challenge to it. The aggressor picks fights they expect to win. This doesn't need to come back.
As for ladders, if you implement them, you get this scenario.
-Game is balanced for PvM.
-As a result it isn't balanced for PvP.
-It's close enough balanced to be fun, but unbalanced enough that the same class and similair builds keep showing up at the top of the ladder.
-Peope start clammering for nerfs that break the PvM game, to balance the PvE game, or start saying "What's the point of a ladder if it's unbalanced, unfair and doesn't mean anything.
-In the end, it doesn't make anyone happy.
Until they release further details, we won't know what the game has to offer PvP oriented players. But I think you will at least get arenas, and maybe multiple game types (since they are delaying). In the end, what is wrong with auto match making? As your skill increases, and your win/loss goes above 50/50, you are matched against harder opponents. The system grows with you and you keep encountering better players and needing to improve. Or if you plateau in skill, you fight a variety of people at a similar skill level and win probably 50% of the time. How is that a worse system than just being able to run around randomly "ganking" people?
I do think they should be responsible enough to announce exactly what they plan to do with PvP, and how long they expect it to take to patch it in, before release. And I do think a dueling or limited hostile mode should be added. Also I think it would be good if they can work in multiple duel types and allow you to enter the match making system in parties. Arena should really be max of 3 vs 3 instead of having the 4 player cap that PvM games have. I wouldn't be surpised to see at least a few of those things hit with the PvP patch.
But, I'm going to say this again. PvE has always been the focus of development in Diablo. In fact, the "freedom" you experienced in Diablo II, was because Diablo I and Diablo II both started with a one button solution to PvP. You just go hostile. The arena and match making system show more consideration for PvP than it has ever recieved in this series.
Plus, for reasons discussed extensively in this thread, this game can never be a highly balanced PvP experience where games are fair and ladder rankings are highly meaningful. (Gear instead of strictly skill driven, RMAH to practically buy victory, etc.)
No one is out to ruin PvP. It is just that the majority of players want the game balanced specifially for PvM, don't want to deal with annoying griefers and hostiles dropping into cooperative games, and don't want PvP to become a huge drain on development resources, weekening the core PvM.
I agree %100 and can not thank you enough for posting this. The PvE people are a bunch of assholes without any valid claims.
You're going to make a 1 line post that just calls people assholes without valid points, without MAKING any valid point or saying why any of the opposing points aren't valid?
Is the irony of that lost on you? Because I find it highly amusing.
Omega hit the shit on the head, his post shows he actually did PvP in Diablo 2, he wasn't just a random who got spanked in pub games by some tals set garbage player. He is the only 1 on here I have seen that has any authority to really talk about PvP in Diablo 3, everyone else on here is just some PvM'ers who got PK'd and are butthurt or joined a pub game or 2 and got owned and are salty.
You PvM'ers cry and complain "Well Diablo is a PvM game and meant for loot and hack n slash!!!". That is correct, it was inteded to be a PvM game, also intended to be a SOLO PvM game. Now apparently to you kids, what a game is intended to be at the start automatically decides what it is at end game also. It apparently is IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to play Diablo and enjoy Diablo for PvP and not PvM because the gods have deemed it to be unholy and evil.
The real PvP community are not asking for esports, we are not asking for balance changes, we are not asking for a secluded arena with no customization. The wannabe WoW kids who think they can PvP might be, but I guarantee you they drop the game first year cause they realize...hey I can't just autoaim all of my skills and smash my face on the keyboard and win now.
Regarding PvP affecting PvM, if Blizzard is to stupid to make skills work differently in PvP and PvM then they should just send me the code for the game and ill finish it myself. It is junior programming at best to give a skill a different trait depending on the scenerio.
All in all, in the end PvM'ers should stay far far away from PvP, you should thank god and Jay Wilson that the game is so carebear to where you could never be attacked in the game wether it be verbally or physically (Even when you run your mouth cause you got tals set and are so GDLK). I really don't understand why you kids feel need to type in the PvP section, not like you have the skill or the want to participate in it so why bother? I don't go to PvM forums and shit all over myself about how killing Diablo for the 100000000x is boring, so take your ear...take your corpse...and save n exit.
#No more iron mans (and other classic fun games) - why not? Ironman is totally feasible in D3. I don' get this one.
You would have to join games with eachother, only 4 people max by the way. Run the content to said level and rules. Then make an arena and do what team death match? They have not announced any other options for arena yet beyond team death match, no customization where its FFA or 1v2, ect. So ironman is very difficult to pull off correctly and quite bothersom.
#No more joining a random pub game clearing it out and having fun. - if by 'clearing it out' you mean killing the people that are trying to play co-op and wasting their time, then I really don't have anything to say, except: ridiculous.
If he is talking about random pub games where people are co-oping then I agree. You enjoy your static Diablo where no human emotion or influence changes your gameplay whats so ever. You enjoy knowing exactly how every playthrough will go. If he is talking about pub duel games, then I also agree.
Edited your topic title to remove the insulting part of it.
As a reminder, keep the discusison clean of flaming, guys. Whenever a discussion derails into "I'm from 'x' side and I hate everyone from 'y' side, just because" both sides lose the argument and look bad.

WOW this thread is pointless. Blizzard ARE MAKING PVP, its coming in a patch. You won't even be level 60/max gear before PVP is launched anyway. D3 PVP will be > D2 PVP because it has arenas and other things.
