As someone who has had my account hacked at least 4 times, mostly due to WoW (even when I stopped playing and cancelled my subscription all together) I've even had an authenticator attached... I think the limit they imposed on gold restorations is just stupid.

Pretty sure at this point in the game 99% of players (yes a made up statistic) have at least 10million or more gold.
While the changes were surely brought on by people abusing restores..its a bit silly. If your friends are 'hacking' you so you can benefit from a restore they should be able to piece the puzzle together fairly easily.
I never been hacked ever, but if someone got his account stolen for real he's getting punished twice with the gold restriction. Once for the the actual theft of the account, second for the restriction of gold.

The rollback policy is the best of a bunch of crappy solutions to problems caused by scammers and exploiters. It's long overdue, and I'm just suprised Blizzard took so long... but it's clearly worked, or they wouldn't have bothered.
At this point, if you're intending to spend more than a few dozen hours playing Blizzard games, just get an authenticator. They're dirt cheap/free, and they work.
Well to be fair it is rather easy to avoid account compromise, if you are willing to spend the time to make gold or level your hero's to para 100 it must be worth the time to secure your p.c.
Simple things such as virus scan, separate email/password for your B-net account and don't be silly enough to click random links/enter password on an unknown site.
In all fairness i respect what they are doing, helps the economy and teaches the person who has been hacked a valuable life lesson.
As a system and network administrator I use a Cisco ASA5505 firewall at home because I'm that paranoid and I was still hacked..and I had an authenticator. Blizzards canned ass excuse of my email was hacked is bogus and a poor one at best. They've even acknowledged that authenticators don't always work either.
With that said the rollback is pretty much an effort to curb the abuse but I think its just laziness on their part and a lack of investigative techniques being employed.
=> They need your PW
=> They need your Authenticator number to get pass it even if they have your PW.
=> If they log from another location, they need to know your secret question's answer... even if they have your PW and Authenticator.
I find it amazing that you got hacked nonetheless. I use a different email and I change my PW from time to time.
Obviously hacking is BM, but being hacked is a direct result of some mistake made by the user (99% of the time ). I have been hacked before on many different games, and I can almost always trace it back to some mistake I made along the way. Whether it was sharing a password or downloading content from a sketchy site, the blame falls on ME for compromising my account, not the hacker, and certainly not Blizzard.
You have to ask yourself, Stephen, getting hacked 4 times so close together......is it something you're doing? I would review your habits and try to figure it.

Ok mr. im a sys admin...Lets assume your system wasnt compromised at any point...As soon as you have to fill in the 6digit auth code(using the "hardware" auth from blizzard) you have 30secs to put in the right code. Since the api limits the amount of inputs per timeframe its next to impossible to hack an account secured with an auth other then havin a realy realy realy realy lucky punch. We are talking about 6 digits and 10 possible numbers per digit. Im sure you can do the math on your own how many codes could be possible.
Without using things like men-in-middle attack, compromise the email server or "social hacking"(using a copy of the passport/driver licence to trick the blizzard support) im pretty sure an account secured by an auth wasnt hacked so far.
P.S. AFAIK the imputlimit is 1/per sec. when forced to enter the auth code to protect the auth/login servers from getting spamed.

Given that almost every other person that says they have been hacked multiple times claims to be an IT professional I seriously worry about the security of our IT systems and the competency of our IT professionals

Well, shit happens. I don't want to discuss the controversy of the OP, being a system administrator and being hacked multiple times, so i'll just want to share a more meaningful thought about the new restoration policy.
It's pretty harsh, but for good reasons. Blizzard is too kind about restorations, i saw players in WoW hacked multiple times and the support team always restored 100% of the victim's account. But the difference in WoW is that everything is BoA, and gold is useless for the most part. In D3 the kind policy, as everyone saw, was abused by exploiters pretty fast and Blizzard had to rework the restoration process and now they are taking an even harsher approach because commodity, expecially gems have a gold value too.
In general, it's healthy for the game, we really don't need more duplication of items and gold but as i said at the start of my post: shit happens. By a mistake or an overlook (user's fault, of course), you get hacked and after the restoration you don't get back all your stuff and it's all limited. It can be quite frustrating and enraging, but at least, you have your character with all the equipment you had....
Blizzard is pretty vocal about account security and provides free authenticators for modern smartphones and physical authenticators from the Store. Hell, there is an unofficial version for Windows too if you live in a country where Blizzard can't ship an authenticator, so just take care of your virtual goodies as your real goodies.
A friend of mine quoted something really funny about account security: "Treat your password as your underwear. Change it often and don't share it with anyone."
Not even going to bother with the ":LOL you're a sysadmin and you've been hacked" bullshit. You do realize the government gets hacked or has had attempted breaches every single day, probably about 15 times just as I typed this. My reason for the post was that even if you're hacked legitimately at this point you're going to pay the price of the people who abused the restore system by having their buddy hack their account.
My account was compromised 4 times over the course of I'd say since Vanilla. Every single time they blamed it on my email being hacked. I change my password probably every 90 days, hell I think the last time it got hacked was when I wasn't even playing anymore and a few months later I got an email saying my account information had changed and some guy removed my authenticator and attached a new one.
If you think that an authenticator is an end all be all full proof solution you're wrong and they've acknowledged on the forums before that it can and has happened before.
Ultimately my point was that this low limit is too severe a punishment for people that can be hacked legitimately. Yes this is a case of the community causing this result to happen, but it just goes to show you how much of a bullshit player base is left on d3.
