3.6 years + level&gear time = ONE toon to get 1*Rank14 gem.
Time is relative, true, but ~4 years is a sizable amount of time for humans.
And 4 years is larger than the lifespan of most games.
And ~11 years is absurd for both.
Ohh and it is 9 YEARS at Rank6 to get all 10 of your gems to Rank14.
Rank5 & Rank6 simply are not viable choices.
You could do that quest 1 time, and as I said quests that yield gems can be factored into the gem acquire rate.
A quest you could do 1 time is basically irrelevant though.
Yes but like I said, you could be way off in terms of speed of looting these gems. If you were intent on getting some gem to the highest level, you could probably do it in a couple of months at that rate of farming. Every item you acquire can be sold or traded to get more of those gems.
It just reminds me of how my girlfriend asks me to download a movie, and then asks how long it'll take before I've even started downloading it. I tell her it really depends on the speed of the download, but she insists on getting an approximate answer to the nearest hour...
A couple months huh....Well lets see,
Specific Gem drop Rate = 4/6 per hour
Gem buy Rate = x
3^(14-6)/(4/6+x)/4 = 60 days
Solve for x, x=26.7 gems bought per hour.
Which is 6400 gems bought in 2 months. 640 stacks is a pretty sizable amount in 2 months, but of course it can be done. But again, like i said in the OP, this math is an estimate for the avg gamer trying to get Rank14gems, not richy rich buying them all.
Also, like I said, grinding to Rank14 quickly is a horrible idea char wise.
You are way better off with lots of lower level gems.
My DL speed is normally about 190 kb/s, so I can give a pretty good estimate.
The time frame from going to a level 5 gem to a lvl 14 gem is best not measured in the classical sense of time measurement... I suggest a different scale!
Going from rank 5 to rank 14 will take exactly from "cool ^^" to "WOOOOHOOOOO :D:D" ^^
Solve for x, x=26.7 gems bought per hour.

It's 6400 of Rank6 gems that you're buying. If you're farming inferno, I suspect some more commonly dropped gear would be worth more than a single Rank6 gem. Notice that x is pretty close to a Rank9 gem, which seems plausible if you're farming end game and purposely striving for gems only.
Since when did it become 4/6 per hour, in the OP you said 4 per hour. Nonetheless, both figures are purely speculative.
This was using Rank6 btw.
It is not speculative at all.
The only 2 variables are drop rate, and avg play time.
And since you gave me a time frame of 2 months, that means that it will take you ~27.5 gems/hour playing 4 hours per day. This # is a fact. However, the ratio of the # that drops to the # that you pickup is speculative, but given such a short time frame you are certainly going to buy the vast majority.
The drop rate I chose was 4 gems per hour. That is 4 random gems per hour though.
There are 6 types of gems, but if you are only interested in one particular gem, then the drop rate is only ONE SIXTH of the original, 4/6 gem/hour

I thank you on your work sir =D fun read
Alas, I have to point out that there are only 4 types of gems now, and I'm pretty sure there was some sort of plan in place to be able to buy gems from the jeweler for some ridiculous amount of gold. What's the drop rank cap? Like you won't see past rank 5 drop right? I want to say the info I heard was you could buy up to that rank with gold, not sure tho. But if true, that would alter the time frames very much so =D

Ahh so that's where the 4/6 came from. Well I assume that if 1 type of gem drops, you can trade it for your desired type. And by buying I don't mean with the RMAH, i mean trading your newly acquired gears for the gems (or equivalently trading it for gold then buying the gems with that).
I realize they said level 7 gems will drop in inferno - but why would they bother to limit it like that? I mean I must have played a thousand hours or more of D2 and I never saw a Windforce drop - if you set level 10+ gems with a drop rate similar to that you'd shave considerable amounts of time off of a few lucky souls without singificantly impacting the economy of the game
I'm really scared that you all are more worried about the difference of dropping 4 or 5 gems an hour than the calculations of playing non-stop 4h a day, seven days a week for more than a year.
You know you could get a part time job and earn a lot of money (even resting in weekends), don't you?
I already picture some people playing 28h in the weekend because he had to do a travel during the week and has to keep up the rate to follow the time projection.
The time frame will change dramatically once the expansion comes out. I think the rank 14 gems will be EXTREMELY valuable to min/maxers...Until the expansion comes out and we get up to rank 10 drops. Then the min maxers are equalized with everyone else.
EDIT: I like the system, it's yet another carrot on the end of a stick. In this game where getting gear/power ups is everything why make the best of any item type easy to get? I think bliz has this right, it's different from before, but that's ok. Also, stash is much more limited in this game, now there's a way to consolidate gems rather than eating up who knows how many slots with Pgems.
I see you mention rank 7 to be the gem dropping in Inferno. Didn't they say something about only the 5 first ranks will drop at all?
That comment is really old.

We'll probably be dropping gems a couple levels further than the 5th (as previously stated), which should help. We also want to make sure it doesn't become a pain to have a ton of gems sitting around waiting for another one to upgrade, so there may be some crafting solutions that help with that. But more importantly we expect a more robust trading system will make it much more feasible to sell off a ton of gems, earn that wealth, and then buy back into gems later when you want - and on the buyer side of that, if you have some gems and just need one more to upgrade, it will be quick and easy to go get one for a reasonable price.
Of course this one is also old, but it clearly insinuates Rank7 gems.
It also says that there will be some crafting solutions....who knows what that is though.
And as I mentioned earlier, Rank5 & 6 have time frames that are insane.
At the same rate, it would take 9 years to get 10*Rank14 gems with a Base Rank of 6, and 27 years with a base Rank of 5.
Even if you increased the drop rate to absurd levels, there is no way Rank5 becomes a viable choice.
Rank 6 is a distant maybe...you would need 15 gems per hour, one every 4 mins, to put this in the 3 year ballpark. And imo, that drop rate is just way too high, and you are still at 3 years.
With those 2 things combined, imo, it is clear evidence that Rank7 will drop in inferno.

One is never hurt by being given additional choices, only by taking them away. A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
That is a nice video, but there are a couple problems with it.
#1 It tries to estimate the time to acquire a single Rank14 gem. My estimation is a realistic time to acquire numerous rank 13s, and finally craft your 1st rank14.
#2 There is one mistake. The video says that drop rate of a specific gem is 4gems/hour, but that also means that the drop rate of the other 4 or 6 gems is also 4 gems/hour. Thus after 3.37 years, you have 4 or 6 gems, not just 1.
(4 or 6)
Currently we do not know how many gems their will be. They announced 6, but only 4 are in the items tab.

SO, can we fairly conclude that the highest-ranked gems are vastly underpowered for the time investment required to get them? I think we can!
If I had to propose a change (a quick, out-of-my-rear idea), I might add a tier-2 random modifier (ie, a modifier that might be found on lvl 40 armor) to rank 12 & 13 gems and a tier 1 (level 60 equivalent) modifier to rank 14 gems. Clearly Blizz has to step up the reward a bit in order to get us to commit the time and effort needed to produce a rank 14 gem - because the incentive just ain't there right now!
They might still be working on the other gems on what they do or they may decide to have them be implemented later in an expansion.
I am not concerned with the time frame for gems since the lower level gems are still good at say level 10. To get there it likely will not take that much time likely a few months playing unless in HC and you die with high gems.
Like I stated earlier I do see the drop rate to be very good at least for the lower gems. I also can see some enhancement recipes that require them to add the property to the item. That way you can have a higher drop rate for gems but it can still take time to get to the highest tier since you may want to use the gem you have on a recipe and the gem is used and lost forever in the process.

On Strike and supporting Fallout 4 Mod Makers
Some fallout 4 mod makers have had their mods stolen and uploaded and downloaded on Bethesda's site for the Xbox One.
I think there will be quest rewards and special bosses that have chances to drop higher lvl gems. Maybe not a specific boss since they don't want people farming the same thing, but random elite types in all acts.
Then there's the secret bonus zones and goblin treasure portals. These places could easily drop rank 6-14 gems and lvl 5-7 runes. Maybe not bucket loads, but often enough that we won't see rank 14 gems on the RMAH for $500 each.

We might be looking at something like this:
3 lv7 > lv8
3 lv8 > lv9
2 lv9 + gemdust > lv10
2 lv10 + 2gemdust > lv11
