A thought occurred - obviously, hundreds, if not thousands of hacker kids are going to be trying to engineer a way to play d3 offline, if not on private servers.

Do you think they'll succeed? If so, when?
SC2 was broken in less than 2 weeks after the beta with a mode where you could play against basic A.I.
This time however, it seems a lot of the NPCs behaviors are on server side... I'm still confident however that some people will be able to make a D3 offline client with basic AI for monsters. About loot? I don't expect anything.
As with the case of WoW - within months. They just need to find out the basic stats for enemies. They won't care much about loot and will probably just set everything to ~1%.

Honestly I doubt it will happen soon after release, but as far as cracking the game and making an offline private servers, I could care less, because it won't effect my online play on battle.net. As soon as hacking duping and bots become a problem, then it's a different story. And While it will take a little bit to hack the game into a private server, I really highly doubt any bot/dupe will last more than maybe a couple days =)
I'd guess a month or two. But by then we'll be so close to release that it will hardly matter.
Edit--
Woops, thought we were talking about the beta. Hrm, no idea on the actual full game. A lot of behavior will likely be mapped to the server, so, like everyone else is pointing out, only simple things like limited monster AI would probably make it into a broken game until someone comes along to insert scripts to act in lieu of a server.
Btw, everyone keeps saying "Well WoW was hacked, so D3 should be able to be also!" WoW has never been fully hacked. The private servers you see now are custom scripted. There have been times when pieces of the programming have been stolen but not the whole thing. Most of these cases also happened in the early days of WoW back when Blizzard security was really low grade.
Jailbreaking... is not even close to the right term..
Which would you prefer? It seems like iphone jailbreaking is somewhat like what a d3 player that wants offline fun would want.
jailbreak allows you to unlock the ability to install third party apps on your phone, views its file system..ect
you cant just "unlock" offline, we have to be able to create a fake server for the client to talk to... its a VAST more complicated job, once again just as D as said... hes stealing the worlds right from my mouth...stop doing that =P
I read somewhere that they've yet to crack Darkspore, which is online only as well I believe. No idea if Darkspore is worth playing though, so people might simply not be interested in cracking it.
Anyway, I don't know, I don't see why you would want to play a pirated version anyway.
Darkspore? lmao yeah, not worth a minute of effort

Indeed, which is exactly what I meant when I said "just like WoW". There were working servers on day 1 but they had close to no content at all. It took close to 3-4 years for some good servers to show up and even then they were months away from where WoW was. Same will happen to Diablo.
The only thing worthy of hacking would be the beta. Not everyone is going to get in, so for those want to try it out without a beta key could get a hack beta version for some enjoyment until the real thing comes. I serious don't like any hacking that will cause a loss in sales.
No, I don't think it will be "jailbroken." I think making the private server, populating it with npcs, giving the npcs ai, scripting events, designing loot, and and fixing bugs will cost more effort than paying 50-60 bucks.
It's simply not cost effective fun.
Chances are the people that can do that, will more likely put their efforts into creating more effective bots and hacks / exploits / cheats w/e...
OT: I can see how someone not realizing "jailbreak" is actual term, instead of slang/jargon, could use it in this context. Online only being the jail, offline multi and single being freedom...
this post could be biased...... I'm not sure that my opinion on online only isn't influencing my reasoning.
It'll likely take more than a year, you can't compare the Starcraft 2 beta as local play just required an AI. The hackers have yet to actually emulate battle.net for Starcraft 2, though they have made some basic progress at the moment to the point that they can basically bypass it and play against eachother.
This will still be less than what is required for Diablo 3 though, they need proper battle.net emulation, they can't just "bypass" it, and i figure that will atleast take a year, unless there are some very determined individuals who don't get caught or stopped first.

Ha. Bagstone.
Luckily though, as far as online play goes I trust in Blizzard to stop any online tampering that may happen some time after release.
anyway I agree with D... at least a year...if not longer. They have to emulate the Diablo 3 server in full before there is an offline mode.

Well, pirated or not, some people see computer games as, first and foremost, something to pass the time on things like plane trips or bus rides.
