OK guys so to be perfectly honest I'm playing D2 and I'm not sure about getting 3 for 2 reasons; 1 is that the majority says its not living up to the oldies and 2 is that there will be reaper of souls out soon and probably we would get better deal for expansion set and who knows maybe Diablo IV lol.
AnYwAy my question(s) to you:
1. The worldstone was created to keep Sanctuary hidden yeah? So why does it get destroyed and how come it was crappy enough that Sanctuary has always been cursed with demons walking around and undead? I understand that in the end it is destroyed which means all heaven and hell knows about the existence of Sanctuary.
2. In Diablo 2, is Diablo / Dark Wanderer = Hero from the first Diablo game? Because in the beginning, Warrive says something that sounds like it but I'm not sure. Anyhow I know that in the first game the hero goes underneath tristram and into Hell itself to kill Diablo, and then in Diablo 2 and 3 you kill him again so... What gives? Mephisto and Diablo's soulstones were destoryed too in D2 or I'm mistaken here?
The Worldstone did exist from the beginning of the eternal conflict. It was part of the creature that created the angels and was desired by both. It was what the Pandemonium Fortress was built around. Inarius and Lilith stole the stone to build Sanctuary. Inarius used the stone to conceal Sanctuary.
The dark wanderer is Aidan, son of Leoric. He is the character who's story you act out in Diablo and he becomes the dark wanderer after plunging the stone into his head.(No pockets?) At the end of Diablo II you do destroy Diablo's soulstone and he is in some abyss as maka said. He and his brothers are sucked into the Black Soulstone once it is activated. I am not gonna say much more cause of spoilers.
I did finish D2 altho only in normal so same thing story-wise.
So no matter what class you choose in Diablo 1, the name is Aiden?
He plunged the soulstone of Diablo into his own head yeah? So then after he left Tristram was when Diablo was taking over slowly? At the end of Diablo II you fight diablo, I dont remember ever destroying his soulstone but I remember destroying the stone of Mephisto with the Flail. And before that with the Staff it failed to summon Baal so Duriel was summoned instead.
Anyway, all I understood is that Diablo was manifesting with his brothers and then going to his lair in Hell. beats the hell outta me me why I even needed to open 5 seals to summon him lol...
So yeah it's all pretty vague to me, sorry haha.
Any way you guys can try to put it in easier words? xD

So these sorts of questions are pretty hard to answer because they are actively re-writing the Diablo story through each game and through side projects like books and comics.
For example, one that particularly irks me is in Diablo 1 the Warrior is just some random brute, but in Diablo 3 the story says he was actually the prince's older brother.
But anyway, the short version as far as I can figure it is that the angels and demons were fighting, and a splinter of each faction figured out how to use the Worldstone to shift into a new dimension, where they built up the world of Sanctuary away from the war. While there, they used the Worldstone to dampen the powers of their offspring, the nephalem, and evolution eventually produced humanity. The existence of Sanctuary is eventually "leaked" back to the angels and demons because the humans were using rituals to summon demons to their world, like you do. The prime evils decide they want in on that, there's fighting, and ultimately a truce.
In the meantime, the lesser evils get annoyed that the prime evils are focused on sanctuary, and cook up a plot to get the primes exiled to sanctuary. They succeed, and Tyrial forms the Horadrim to deal with the primes, giving them the soulstones.
They eventually get the primes boxed up, but the primes start corrupting the soulstones, like you do. Diablo almost breaks free but is stopped by the player in Diablo 1, who then becomes the Dark Wanderer and goes off to free Mephisto and Baal in D2. Even though the player destroys the soulstones in D2, it's not enough to eliminate the primes. As far as I know, nobody knows why that is yet, although the logic never made much sense to me, since the soulstones were given out as prisons in the first place. Personally, I think they just wrote themselves into a corner, cribbing from the phylactery concept that liches use in standard fantasy fare.
You can read up on all this stuff on wiki sites like diablo.wikia.com, under main character entries. You will see some conflicts, however, because as I said they're actively re-writing their lore as the series progresses.
edit: Just to clarify - it doesn't matter which character the player chooses, the warrior is the one that becomes the Dark Wanderer at the end of D1. My personal belief is that this is because they couldn't afford to do cinematics for all three at the time.
My personal belief is that this is because they couldn't afford to do cinematics for all three at the time.
Maybe. But very often the story gets written ahead of what is actually needed. So maybe when the actual game was developed, the writers already knew the different roles for Aiden, the rogue and the sorcerer after the events of Diablo 1. If you read all the tomes in the dungeons of Diablo 1 you see at least there is a lot material and thought behind it. They even mention other evils like baal and mephisto. So maybe they even had the Diablo 2 plot ready when Diablo 1 was developed.
Sure - they definitely wrote a lot of stuff, and I'm sure in writing it they said, "this doesn't fit here, but maybe in a sequel." But I don't think that was the case for the characters from Diablo 1. For the warrior, at least, I know that's not the case because the Diablo 1 manual specifically says that Albrecht was Leoric's only son. Plus, nothing in the entirety of Diablo 1 or 2 suggests otherwise, nor that Bloodraven is the rogue and the Summoner is the mage. It just doesn't make sense to me that they would intentionally re-introduce the old characters but then never give you any clues (that I saw, anyway) to figure that out - even like a simple line of dialogue from the relevant quest givers.
I'm Going to give you the condensed answers to your questions. (My info is taken both from The Book Of Cain, and DiabloWiki)
Q1: The Worldstone was rumored to be the Eye of Anu, It had immense power and was the Heart of creation. Inarius, an Angel who had become tired of the conflict between Angel and Demon, stole the Worldstone to create, and hide, the World of Sanctuary. Later, Inarius, who had come to realize that the Nephalem (Humans) had become stronger then either Demon or Angel and that their powers would attract the attention of both, used the Worldstone to drain the Nephalem of their power. Fast foward to D2 LoD when Baal infused the Worldstone when evil itself to turn the Nepahlem to the side of the Demons, making them powerful tools.
Tyrael, knowing the Worldstone cannot be purged of this evil, decides to destroy it. It is this action that allows Humans to slowly regain their Nephalem powers.
Q2: Yes, the Dark Wanderer is actually the Hero from D1, Aidan. And Only Mephistos Soul Stone is destroyed at the Hellforge.
As for why neither Angel, or Demon can be destroyed, think of it like this. Good and Evil, are simply forms of energy (Positive, and negative forces). Energy cannot be either created, or destroyed,, it can merely change forms. This is what happens to them. When their Physical forms are destroyed, the go to an ethereal form. After some time they are able to regain their strength and resume a physical form again.
Definitely recommend Diablowiki and the Books of Cain and Tyreal if you really want to get into the Diablo lore.

Well I only played Diablo II in my life and it is the best RPG I've played so I it really bugs me when I don't understand the story for this and the other reason which is that it really feels like Supernatural(if you know the TV series) is taking place in miedeval ages and I dig that vibe a lot! The reason I'm not getting D3 is the animosity about it and bad feedback and also no one really played official Reaper of Souls yet so who knows how good it is? Plusss I'd probably buy it later when they offer a set pack of D3+RoS. btw do you see the game as a MMORPG by definition/technically? Seeing as you cannot play singeplayer lol.
Also a HUGE turnoff for me is that the only true Necromancer there is a NPC...
I only play Necromancer in Diablo II and to be honest I could get over the name 'Witch Doctor' if the minions weren't toads and aztek hellific creatues. I mean c'mon a better name would be "Aztek Shamam" or either which.

Thanks that puts things in a clearer perspective. So I guess only Mephisto can't be formed again right? and what about someone here saying that Aiden plunged Diablos soulstone into his head?
Is the only way to kill a demon/send it back to hell fo good is to break the soulstone?
But yeah knowing that in the beginning the stone really did it's work is good I guess but how do peeps like Baal find out about Sanctuary? And in D2 do you kill Diablo in Hell?
As you noticed some people didn't like the way things turn out in Diablo 3, and a lot will tell you the story is "cheesy".
Even if you do play it mostly for the story (and hence play it only a couple times to experience all the side-quests or try all the skills/runes/classes), you'll still find a very enjoyable gameplay experience, and you can judge the story by yourself
The majority of complaints regarding D3 are related to its end-game customization/balance and replayability more than anything. So don't worry too much about those (unless you plan on going all the way to Inferno MP 10 Act IV :P)
So these sorts of questions are pretty hard to answer because they are actively re-writing the Diablo story through each game and through side projects like books and comics.

That's weird. Talk as if there are a ton of retconning in the Diablo story. It was very minimal, and necessary for the story to actually "click and fit", and I don't think there are a lot of plot holes in it either.
You can read up on all this stuff on wiki sites like diablo.wikia.com, under main character entries. You will see some conflicts, however, because as I said they're actively re-writing their lore as the series progresses.
Not re-writing the lore. Completing it with other info (like the Crusader origin story).

I'm no lore expert, but I wanna point out that Diablo's Soulstone is indeed destroyed as well at the Hellforge. You can see that in the D3 (classic) epilogue video; it shows the destruction of the (purple) Mephisto Soulstone, and the destruction of the (red) Diablo soulstone right after that.
Technically, there's no guidebook way about "how to kill a prime evil". In Diablo 1 the hero finds out that simply killing Diablo does nothing, as he just killed one physical manifestation of the Prime Evil. He realizes that Diablo used his brother Albrecht as a vessel and argues that Diablo needs to be contained. He is stupid enough to think that he has more willpower than The Lord of Terror and forces Diablo into his body by putting the Soulstone into his forehead. "It's all part of the plan", I hear someone whispering.
In Diablo 2, the inevitable happens and Diablo comes back to life. He is then killed and the Soulstone is being destroyed (see small snippet in the D2 classic epilogue video). Diablo is banned into the abyss. And then there's Diablo 3... well, not gonna spoiler it (let us know if you completed the story already, although it's not a very good story I feel you should play it yourself at least once). But once you completed D3 (actually, once you finished act 2) we can shed more light on this - tell us if you've finished quest #8 act 2 already ;-)
You can read up on all this stuff on wiki sites like diablo.wikia.com, under main character entries. You will see some conflicts, however, because as I said they're actively re-writing their lore as the series progresses.

Some parts just don't match. It started in D2 when I was like "WTF? My main was monk, I wasn't a warrior". Also, when you kill Leoric in D1 there is absolutely no mentioning of the fact that you just killed you father. And some other stuff. Not sure why they had to add all of this, it just causes confusing without adding much depth to the story, imho.

Well, not having anything mentioned when you kill Leoric is a consequence of that 1 retconning. I don't deny there are quite a few consequences to that, but I'm saying that it's not like the entire lore is rewriten and retconned every year. It was the first time they even did something like that.
And whether it adds depth, that's debatable imo. I wouldn't call it depth, but the story matches and starts making sense from a chronological point of view.
What was before a random guy battling a random demon in a random town (which is probably how the franchise "lore" started, and then it took became huge afterwards) now is a son who went to war, came back to find something even worse in his hometown, his family crushed; found strenght to save the town, but then even though he "won", he actually lost by going crazy. Also, Adria and Leah make a lot more sense with the retconned Aidan than they would with a "random monk".
Again, I wouldn't say it was a good or bad call (to me that's very debatable, and I did find D3's story to be quite cheesy), but I get why they followed that path.
The Soulstones were merely a device to hold the ethereal forms (Essences) of the Prime Evils. Destroying them only sent them into the void, where they would stay until strong enough to take physical form again. They (The Prime Evils) cannot be truly destroyed.
When the Stone was thrust into Tal Rasha, it was because the stone was weak and Tal Rasha believed that he in in conjunction with the stone could hold Baal imprisoned.
Also, I forgot they smashed Diablos Soulstone at the end. Ty Bagstone for pointing that out.
As for Retcons, lets just say Blizzard is famous for them. That said, Diablo isnt near as bad as WoW. Which has been retconed to death. And is still being so to this very day.
Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any other questions you have. Everyone here tries to answer them best they can.

Why was it necessary to make Aidan the other son of Leoric, for example, when no 2nd son had been mentioned thus far?
Unnecessary fluff.
Of course it was unnecessary. But I would argue that it makes the story of D1 feel more solid. Instead of the hero being some random warrior who just happened to show up in Tristram, he has a reason to come back there. Being the son of Leoric and the brother of Albrecht makes what he accomplishes under the cathedral much more meaningful.
Yes it's fluff, but this is an ARPG. Pretty much all the lore is fluff. Do you feel that the new fluff is worse than the old fluff?
It makes the story as a whole more cohesive. From a "series" point of view.
As I said, I don't think they thought the franchise was gonna be so massive when they started designing the first Diablo. Hence the whole "stereotypical Rogue-like story". Random dude goes down a random dungeon to face a random demon.

Mephisto and Diablo's soulstones were destoryed too in D2 or I'm mistaken here?
Thanks in advance and may dis game never die!
The worldstone existed well before the creation of sanctuary. It goes something like this. Inarius and Lilith (Angel and Demon respectively, In fact Lilith is daughter of Meph) Wanted to create a world where Angels and Demons co-habitated. They were also lovers. They create Sanctuary as their literal Sancctuary and take with them the worldstone and the renegade angels and demons. They fuck a bunch and make Nephalem. The worldstone hides their presence. Eventually the Neph become super strong and Inarius is like fuck they're gunna kill us and Lilith is like Yo we could fuck up heaven and Hell with these dudes let's live in eternal peace instead of conflict. Inarius is like no they must be kept under control so Inarius goes alters the worldstone and make the neph slowly lose powers. Thus no more super powered neph. He sends lilith to the abyss where presumably she cant come back. During this time I'm guessing there has to be a way to move back and forth from hell and Heaven or Pandemonium and Sanctuary thus if any one of the demons was like this is retarded I like hell more they probably just went back and told meph, or any other evil. Then when she gets out basically she awakens the powers in Uldyssian ul-diomed whom is a nephalem, by this time there are no neph with powers and the ancients, Bul-Kathos, Rathma and all the others are said to have been dead now. So she uses Uldyssian and makes him kill her brother Lucian, Meph Son, and then makes him destroy the 3 religions devoted to the 3 evils, and then she makes him awaken the abilities of other neph and he gains a huge following of people makes them pretty much half as good as you are in any Diablo game, and then makes them defeat the zakarum, but during their battle Hell comes onto the battlefield and so does the angels and the neph are caught in the middle of a huge fucking war. So Uldyssian being about 100 times better than who you play as in any Diablo game says shit I have to reverse this. So he sacrifices himself and reverses things back to the way they were before. But during this he altered the worldstone to make neph gain their powers again slowly. So after this the Angiris council and Meph sit down in a room and make an agreement that they will allow the neph to decide which side they are on. Meph agrees and they all agree to not interfere. But obviously Diablo says fuck that and terrorizes Tristram, and then Meph and Baal get in on it too and so the angels have no choice but to interfere as well and so far most people hate hell. So thats basically number 1
2 is that the evils are just souls, In 1 Diablo dies but his soulstone is removed from Albrecht, Aidans brother, and put into Aidan, the Warrior from D1. He thought he was strong enough to contain the evil within himself... RETARD. Anyway soon enough the soulstone takes over him and he becomes Diablo as he can no longer fight off his soul. We kill Diablo and break the soulstone but that just means his form isn't limited through the soulstone and his soul is in the Abyss. Basically in 3 Adria gathers all the other evils souls in the black soulstone. Her daughter Leah, whose father also happens to be Aidan, which in turn means Diablo as well, is then used as a host because of her strong connection with Big D because well shes his daughter, and then Adria uses a ritual to bring him from the abyss and take over Leah whom by the way also has the Black soulstone in her body as well. Then We kill Diablo, but again his soul is trapped within the Black soulstone.
That's weird. Talk as if there are a ton of retconning in the Diablo story. It was very minimal, and necessary for the story to actually "click and fit", and I don't think there are a lot of plot holes in it either.

Actually he is mentioned if i'm not mistaken, he was supposed to be off in westmarch but then they said he came back and was actually the one who defeated big D. Remembr this was a very small game made by a team of about 15-20 people in an apartment that magically got picked up by Blizzard and then had half of it revamped. They probably didn't think it would hit the market that big, and as such they were like oh shit people like this we must devote more to it, and over the course of the series the story got fleshed out more and more and now it's just a great stroy. All the back lore is amazing especially the Sin war. Honestly I hope we get to travel back to the sin war somehow IDGAF put in some time traveling elves I want to meet MEndeln and Uldyssian ul diomed that was an amazing story.

I think I got this: remember how the Vijir... um those ancient wizards kept summoning demons? Suppose some of them returned to the abyss and revealed the location of sanctuary.
1 - The Worldstone was actually used to keep Sanctuary hidden, as I believe it already existed; it wasn't created for that purpose. It was destroyed in D2 because it had been corrupted by Baal, which, I believe, would give him influence over the entire human population. Tyrael couldn't change it back, so he thought it best to destroy it. Why was sanctuary known to some demons (and angels) despite the presence of the Worldstone? I'm not sure. Maybe someone can answer this.
I don't know if that was answered but in the Book of Cain it is said that in the Mage Clan Wars, one of them, the Vizjerei, started to mess around resurrection, demonic magic, bringing some forms into our world. And Thought they could use it to crush other clans. That made the hellspawn aware of the sanctuary, and even the Prime Evil helping and corrupting the brothers that lead the clan.

Even if you do play it mostly for the story (and hence play it only a couple times to experience all the side-quests or try all the skills/runes/classes), you'll still find a very enjoyable gameplay experience, and you can judge the story by yourself
The majority of complaints regarding D3 are related to its end-game customization/balance and replayability more than anything. So don't worry too much about those (unless you plan on going all the way to Inferno MP 10 Act IV :P)
That's weird. Talk as if there are a ton of retconning in the Diablo story. It was very minimal, and necessary for the story to actually "click and fit", and I don't think there are a lot of plot holes in it either.

Just... no!
Those Who Do Not Know True Pain Cannot Possibly Understand True Peace...
Vizjerei
I don't know if that was answered but in the Book of Cain it is said that in the Mage Clan Wars, one of them, the Vizjerei, started to mess around resurrection, demonic magic, bringing some forms into our world. And Thought they could use it to crush other clans. That made the hellspawn aware of the sanctuary, and even the Prime Evil helping and corrupting the brothers that lead the clan.
