is tomorrow still looking good for #Diablo3 Patch 10?
Depends on how testing goes today.
Itemization Reduced?
With the recent announcement of the system changes, a couple of users have voiced some concern with the changes to the core attributes. Many worry about the amount of itemization being reduced by the attributes affecting different stats now. Bashiok has commented to help further explain the ideology behind these changes and how the itemization is not reduced at all.
Official Blizzard Quote:
Core attributes are important. They're your core attributes! But they have never been and continue not to be the primary driving force behind your itemization choices. At all times you're going to need to keep doing and avoiding more damage. Enemies get tougher, they hit harder, and take more hits. No matter who you are you have to counter those inevitable truths. No character would ever say "I can ignore defensive stats because I am a glass cannon!" no, you get to Inferno and you'll die. You can be a glass cannon, but it's going to be a balance between offense and defense, not an all-in decision. There is an inevitable requirement to have a variety of the core stats, offensive and defensive. It's the balance that's important.
Ok, so, core stats are super great, but they're still just four of all the bonuses that items can roll and provide your character. Four. And for most builds they're never going to be where you're focusing your attention. The other things that can roll up (which still include +armor, +dodge, +health globe, +crit chance, +crit damage, by the way) have always been the more important decision. It's your choice between doing more damage or being more defensive, but that's a forgone conclusion. That's not where true build diversity ever comes from, it's too broad a plateau.
Are you taking Attack (before) or your classes' core damage stat (now)? Are you taking Armor (now) or Defense (before)? Are you taking Precision (before) or +crit (now)? These are the same things.
For example, a Barbarian gets both "resist-all" armor and Attack-like damage from "Strength", so why would he ever choose Dexterity's dodge over that?
Barbarian's will always want Strength now just like they always wanted Attack before. Armor is a damage reduction. Dodge completely negates damage. They're extremely different in practice and your survivability, and at high difficulty play barbarians will absolutely want +dodge. And they don't have to take Dexterity to get it. Ideally a barbarian would find an item with +Stength and +Dodge on it. It would be devalued for the barb if it had +Dexterity on it. (tah dah itemization diversity)
Also, would he truly ever choose to go after a stat that increases health globe benefits, over strength?
Up to that player and their build. Would he ever want crit over flat damage increases? Would he take an increase to the damage of cleave over a crit damage increase? These are the choices you'll have to make and what makes building characters fun.
Now, obviously the class stats are the top priority, but each stat has equal value, simply because it can be used by somebody.
What this guy said.
It's also about item comparison, and that's simply not an issue in the beta. You're not getting enough drops or enough tough decisions to make item comparisons a problem for you.
What was happening for us at high levels is that the stats we had required you to think about the item for at least a couple seconds just to realize it's not a good item for your character. By having a single damage stat now you're focusing on, it reduces the number of failed comparisons that quickly add up at later levels. The tough decisions are still really tough and you'll be comparing items for a long time to try to figure out which one is better, but all of the less meaningful drops take less time to realize that the item is not for you and quickly move on. Again that's something that you just can't get a good sense of in the beta, but Diablo II players should sympathize with what this change does to resolve item comparison headaches.
Now we are going back to the mathematically correct ways of going after core attributes.
I think there may be a confusion that +dodge is tied to Dexterity now. Or +health globe is tied to Intellect. That's not the way it works, those stats are and still roll as their own affixes on items.
Also I sort of misspoke in that this change doesn't really affect build diversity, of course, all the same stats exist for people to stack or do whatever they want with. But it greatly increases item diversity.
You have your reasons for removing stat distribution, but to argue it was to prevent players for sucking in inferno is something I'll never comprehend.
I never said and it's absolutely not to help people "not suck". The same "I don't have enough defense to survive" exists now as it did before. If you're saying that a player would be playing and not realize the numbers on his items going higher was to give him more damage and/or defense then that's just not a valid assessment of what makes a player skilled.
Is there still a +attack affix or is that one actually gone?
Your damage is increased by your core class stat, but there are many other affixes that can improve your damage in various ways. It's the same. When you wanted Attack before you just want your class stat now instead. (Tracker/Official Forums)

Why Include White Items?
Diablo is about loot explosions. We can't realistically have loot explosions without a bunch of confetti and glitter that makes it all look exciting, but has no value except to make the explosions more satisfying. Gold still did this to a degree, but we were missing the "arrows and bolts" of yesteryear. White items were worth something and we really didn't have any junk we could just throw out with no limit. IGN Interview with Aaron Williams
IGN recently posted an interview they had with Aaron Williams, author of the Sword of Justice. In case you missed our interview with him, you can check it out here.
IGN Comics: What led you to take on this assignment? Are you a big fan of the games?
Aaron Williams: I have to thank former DC/WildStorm editor Scott Peterson for giving me the opportunity to try my hand at it. We'd worked together before on another comic called North 40, and he'd read some of my indie work on a comic called Nodwick, which is a fantasy spoof. And I'm definitely a fan of the Diablo franchise. Had I known how much my index finger was going to be needed for mousing around in the game, I would have stuck with piano lessons for a few more years.
IGN: How much freedom did you have as far as developing the story? Was it an intentional decision to distance the book from the characters and locales of the games?
Williams: I had quite a lot of freedom, so long as I didn't contradict or run into game content that Diablo III was going to establish. That is, I had to make sure my wizard character, Shanar, used the spells at her disposal in the game, especially in combat. I also had a scene that was going to take place at the Forgotten Tower, but that area is, shall we say, "spoken for" and we didn't want to either spoil it or have the player think, "but this comic says two people came here and trashed the place already. How come it's not a smoking crater?" This wasn't as restrictive as it sounds, really, as most of the story takes place in an unexplored area of the Dreadlands. (Full Interview)

More and more i just dont trust this Jay Wilson. Reminds me of the politicians, always talking never progressing.
I felt the same exact way. Saying the release date is nearing, without us knowing what that release date ACTUALLY is, that's saying the release date is "soon", which is what it is; not nearing because there's no date to gauge by!
More and more i just dont trust this Jay Wilson. Reminds me of the politicians, always talking never progressing.
Some things sound good on paper but turn out less interesting than expected in practice. Its kind of what happens if you test internal builds and you realize something is off. You either finish the product even though you don't agree with it, or you go make it better. Since there was no solid commitment made, why should Wilson and his crew rush out the product if they have doubts about it?
Why you and other folks deny the fact what bliz is doing is wrong? and you are on their side? i.e you can't say it is coming soon, then rephrase it by saying Q1, then rephrase it by saying there has to be 2 month window time from date of announcement of the release date.
to me saying anything about window time releasing time as Q1 is a commitment, and Q1 with 2 month window time from date of announcement is away from Q1 time window. So please stop re-acting as you support them cause they have to POLISH or RE-MAKE what they think is wrong and deliver the game with good shape, hence there is nothing is perfect, and thats why they call it patch files every time and then.
Up to that player and their build. Would he ever want crit over flat damage increases? Would he take an increase to the damage of cleave over a crit damage increase? These are the choices you'll have to make and what makes building characters fun.
Does this means we're getting " X skill damage increaser" items? P.S: how do i quote a blizz post? I couldn't find help.

Not really. What "other side" are you talking about? We're talking about a developer making a game. They AREN'T doing anything wrong, either illegal or in any sort of unethical practice. They've never given a firm release date. They've never committed. They've only ever said they've tried. You and others are taking it way too personally that Blizzard is working on this game the way they've always worked on games.
They've used the term "soon" a lot, so much so, that the joke Soon TM is older than WoW. It was used back in the days of waiting for Diablo II, which was 2 years "late".
This is nothing more than a sense of self-entitlement at work here. These are irrational demands being made and turning this into an issue of sides is kind of silly. We aren't discussing the societal ramifications of a potential censorship bill, or the political landscape of different principles and issues.
We are discussing the development and inevitable release of a video game. A video game. If this is such an important issue that you feel the need to discuss what is "wrong" or that there are sides, it's time to start examining your life priorities. Video games aren't important. They are fun diversions.
And don't get me wrong. I love Diablo. I can't wait for this game. But I also know that, as Blizzard is a company, they are keen to release it to make money, like all companies do. What possible motivation could there be for Blizzard to hold on to their product if not to fine tune it?
So again, this is not the cure for cancer. If for some reason Blizzard just up and scraps Diablo III, the world won't end. You won't die. Nothing will really change. And there will be plenty of other video games for you to worry about.

Well, I do agree with you to a certain point. I'd say JW is using the logic as: the release date "is nearing" even though it aint in 5 weeks, but in 5 months or even 2 months or 7 or.. you get my point. It is nearing no matter when it is.

i was so close to hit my head on the wall while reading what you are saying; my only comment u are so serious, and u won't understand what i meant.
You did. I hope you understand that a patch which changes things like the core stats, it requires a complete wipe of all the items that have those stats that are in circulation. Do you have any idea what the forums would be like if people who spent countless hours farming gear, or anyone who used either the Gold- or RMAH suddenly lost eveything? Sure, they could try changing the stats without trying to wipe like they did in D2. If you can remember, I'm sure you know that when items start having 300+ core stats on them, we have a balancing problem. Its not even like Blizzard could use a ladder reset to clear those items out of ladder mode, because that doesn't exist.
And what exactly is it that Blizzard is doing wrong when every single one of the games they release is a critical success? A game being delayed isn't exactly new to this industry, and Blizzard in particular has an outstanding track record despite also having the longest development times. Surely there can't be a correlation between the work ethics and their success, right?
I'm not saying that I'm enjoying the wait either, but I've played many games similar to Diablo that were great, but never able to keep me occupied for as long. I think that speaks for letting Blizzard develop their game as they see fit, don't you?
I enjoyed reading IGN's interview with Aaron Williams. That being said, the last Q&A regarding (possible) tie-ins to the game has me feeling concerned. Blizzard tried to limit out-of-game lore for World of Warcraft so players wouldn't be left in the dark, and failed. Will it be a different story (pun intended) this time around?
Also I sort of misspoke in that this change doesn't really affect build diversity, of course, all the same stats exist for people to stack or do whatever they want with. But it greatly increases item diversity.
I hope it didn't increase "item diversity" too much. I don't want it to be like when a person goes to a store looking for an item and then proceeds to be overwhelmed by all the brands on the shelves, to the point of becoming completely stumped.

Yes, an argument can be made that there ought to be a reasonable amount of junk in a game. If the amount of trash drops is too large, it'll lead to frustration and people will feel spite towards Blizzard when they actually get a good item to drop (instead of any real sense of accomplishment).
I hate to admit this, but the more info that comes out the more I worry. I am starting to think that maybe Diablo 2.5 would have been better than this crazed Diablo 3.
We're in the process of bringing down the Diablo III test server to deploy Beta Patch 10. Maintenance should begin at approximately 11:00 a.m. PST, and we anticipate that downtime will last approximately 9 hours, until 8:00 p.m. PST.
Let's hope all goes well so we can gather info on the changes.
It seems to me some people fail to understand the way things work. Yes, blizzard did not announce a release date, if they did people would be disappointed when in their hunt for perfection blizzard had to postpone the game. Yes, blizzard never commited to when the game is approximately coming out. Do you know what blizzard did commit? A shit fucking ton of money into this. Every day that the game is not realeased they are paying the entire D3 team for something they haven't seen a penny from so far. Have they been saying that the game is coming out "soon" for 2 years? Absolutely. Also for the whole x years that the game has been in development they have been sacrificing potential customers (and their patience) and a crap ton of money to make the game good so we don't moan and groan when the game comes out. I don't know about you guys but I don't D3 to be the next Duke Nukem Forever. Here we at least know that they are actually working on improving the game and the recent updates confirm that. I'm surprised to see so many people bitching after that...before we didn't even have a clue what they were doing. Also you should realise, as was previously said, that RMAH makes preparation extremely important because some people will be paying real money for items that would then suddenly become worthless if the stat changes and reitemization happened after the game realease.

#timewilltell
Agree. I'm just sooo tired of all the ridiculous changes and design choices they've made so far with Diablo 3. Seriously this is turning out to be worst than most Diablo clones out there. It seems to me that the current team of monkeys working on this game have no idea how to recreate the essence of the Diablo games but they're too deep in and too stubborn and proud to listen to the fans and change it.
The fact that they're giving out a free copy of Diablo 3 to anyone who signs up for a full year of WoW just goes to show that this game is nothing more than a marketing tool to get players reinvested in their shitty MMO.
I loved Diablo 1 and 2 and spent countless hours playing it with my friends. It was the franchise that got me into gaming and gave me the most memorable gaming moments ever, but thanks to the current team of monkeys working on Diablo 3 I know for a fact that I will not enjoy it nearly as much. They've basically butchered or completely removed every aspect of the Diablo games that made them so enjoyable in the first place.
So once again,
**** YOU JAY WILSON, AND YOUR TEAM OF MONKEYS!

Gold still did this to a degree, but we were missing the "arrows and bolts" of yesteryear. White items were worth something and we really didn't have any junk we could just throw out with no limit. Now we do.

It's taking them longer to develop this than Vanilla WoW, which was far more expansive.
