maybe addicting wasn't the right term, but i think you all knew what i meant. i didnt mean like the korean dude who played starcraft for like 60 hours and died addicting. i just mean enjoyable for so long, like you guys are saying lol.
One of the things for me was getting all the gear for a new charactert and then the aniticipation of using it and leveling up knowing what's in store lol
Diablo 1 was the first RPG (and pretty sure it was one of my first games ever as well) that I played, plus I played it at the young age of 8 so that grows on you.
The game was just so awesome that the whole thing rubbed off on Diablo 2, I saw that game in a store (well after it was released) so I bought it instantly (due to my past) and tried to play it. Sadly my pc could not run it (yeh like what?).
A halfyear later I got a new pc and played it, and it was just awesome. I was disappointed in D1 you had to be inside, but in D2 you could go outside. Made me sooo happy.
Also, awesome story, characters, gameplay, cutscenes. Never played D2 LOD though (I grew on D2 when it was still just D2.). I only downloaded that expansion like a year or 2 ago. It was awesome but runewords and the new characters (pretty much the entire LOD) never grew on me as much as D1 and D2. (Still I can't bear playing D2 without LOD.)
To lazy to read? I was young, when you are young everything is awesome.
I agree. The runewords and stuff never grew on me and...I just didnt like it at all. I liked Act5 and the monsters (Except Harpies)

I would have to say the same thing as you stated. Playing on Bnet by yourself is absolutely no fun. But when you get with a good core of people that have fun getting together.......that's what keeps me interested in the game. That and the expectation of the release of DIII.

Title says it all, what REALLY, deep down, made D2 LOD so friggin' addicting back in the day (and for some still today)???
Humans are naturally attracted to repetitive tasks; the reward system present in these games provides a false sense of accomplishment. Then there's the whole over-compenstation for a lack of real-life status.
Newer generations of games (e.g, WoW) exploit this; older games it's an indirect result (it's not uncommon for behavioural psychologists to be on the payroll in gamedev)
Ah...Matt... we all know we are just mindless zombies mimicking the behavior of when doggy sees bone... But we DO NOT SAY IT. It's a secret dude! :sorcerer:
I am sure if Pavlov was around, he would have probably grabbed a diablo player and observe if he can classically condition the guy to get a boner just with the Tristram theme, but we have not gotten there yet...thankfully.
Now come on, tell us why you like the game.
(tip- disregard the 'addicting' word.)
Oh well in that case; the music. Nowadays I just enjoy reversing Blizzard's anti-cheating attempts (e.g, Warden) as it's the only thing that provides a challenge.
Really, the only thing that kept me from quitting years before I did were my friends that I met in-game. I had a good 10 or so friends that I'd been playing with for years and eventually it wasn't even about finding items or dueling. As soon as I'd realize there was no one on to duel with or talk to I'd log off. And as soon as my friends stopped playing altogether, so did I.
Abusing the game glitches. That's what was fun for me. All the glitch rushes and the uber leveling etc. That was the funnest thing for me. Also dueling was awesome.
The amount of possibilities in diablo is endless because of the loot, skills and how they interact. For exemple, when i just made a Fire Sorc, a Blizz Sorc, a Lightning Sorc and a Meteorb I realised i could abuse the masterys and Dream.
Another factopr that make it's possible is that the game is fairly balanced. I never fealt obligated to use a mainstream build just because the other strange builds are a bit weaker. It still donable and people don't hate you for choosing a build with 3% lower dps.
I hate begrudging other people's reasons for loving the game (well, maybe I don't actually), but just rushing through the game and leveling up as fast as you could was what was worst about D2. It turned Battle.net into a really nasty place.

Agreed.
The process of creating your character, the jorney, is actually much cooler then just playing him when his alread godly.

"In time the hissing of her sanity
Faded out her voice and soiled her name
And like marked pages in a diary
Everything seemed clean that is unstained
The incoherent talk of ordinary days
Why would we really need to live?
Decide what is clear and what's within a haze
What you should take and what to give" - Opeth

And this pic sums up what happened after my first build failed...

Addicting is a shitty (and non-applicable for me) term. I prefer 'enjoyable'.
The items, the quests, the skills and the gameplay. Whole game really.
