Diablo 3 Jeweler Preview
Only the Blacksmith is available in the beta but it doesn't mean we can't gather information through other means. Today I'll try to give you a small preview of what to expect from your friend the Jeweler! But before we start, the obvious and annoying disclaimer to cover my ass.
Disclaimer: This is NOT an official preview, this is mostly the result of datamining and it might not reflect what will be in the final game
The Jeweler is upgradable and can be found in town, just like the Blacksmith on the beta. He offers 3 different types of services:
He will combine 3 identical gems to create a new higher quality gem.
He will remove gems from an item, returning both the item and gems to you intact.
He can also add a socket to an item.
Obviously, adding a socket and removing gems from an items will cost you money but combining gems should be free.
- - - - -
The average amount of sockets on a high level item is around 2-3 depending on the item type but a couple of helms, shields, or weapons seem to have up to 4 possible sockets according to the game files.
Also, a lot of gems are already in the game files and it seems to be a good time to list them
I really dont agree with what blizzard has done with gems, They really should of added more of a gem selection because theres no resistance gem, there isnt leech, or how about some other spicy effect they could of tryed and come up with? I mean come on ruby helm isnt even END GAME EFFECTIVE! its a waste...

I think you are getting upset a little prematurely. One thing I noticed about the socketting page was that weapons were NOT included among items that could have a socket added. This says one of two things to me:
1) Weapon sockets haven't been added yet and are on the to do list, or the ability to socket weapons doesn't come until a higher jewel crafting level.
2) Weapon sockets wont be added until the first expansion, and with it there will probably be new items with which to fill those sockets. Remember, when Diablo 2 first came out there were only gems. After LOD, jewels and runes were added.
Also, remember that there is the Mystic Artisan that will do item enchantments. We will probably see a lot more variety in modifiers from this particular artisan.
Lol what? Gems and gem enhancements were part of Diablo 2, which was released some time early 2000. Torchlight came out on October 27, 2009. I am not great at math, but I think Diablo 2 was around first, meaning that this particular feature is definitely NOT borrowed from torchlight.
Idk why people insist on complaining so much about little things. I'm sure they plan on
adding stuff in the future. That would be hard if they had everything possible in the game
at release... I agree more is better but also you should remember blizzard is a pretty
successful company and probably have a plan. =]

Looking at just the gem selection is STILL (and this is not me getting prematurely upset), a dissapointment. Ruby Helm increased level gain? Really, buy the time your expected to find the last 3 levels in a game you'll probably be in inferno..... Oh wait? isnt that max level end game content... Shouldnt they have made the last 3 ruby gems something else? Like increased potion and health globe number value, blah blah. 1%, 2%, 3%. There sloppy and i'd hope this gets tightened up before release. If there going to push back a games release time we want to see improvements on bad ideas or semi place holders like these.
Something I can't really understand - isn't there a point in the game when there will be a gem inflation? So everyone just needs about 10 gems of each at a high level/max level and then it can be used easy for all chars? Or will it be that hard to make one perfect, that it is almost impossible?
that maybe years down the line like how D2 is now. but its probable that the last versions of the gem, like runes in D3 and the runes and gems of D2, will drop un perfect, even in inferno level. you'll still have to put them together to reach the last levels and it will take time.
I'm not terribly enchanted with the current gem selection either, but my guess is that more socketable items are going to be added to the game through patches and expansions. Also, I'm pretty sure that a lot of the old gem type enhancements (along with tons of new ones) are going to be available through the Mystic.
Just saying.

Also, this is DATAMINED stuff, so we better keep in mind it could change in the release.
The hoarder in me is really happy
Some warriors never wield a shield, they wielded 2 swords and defended themselves . So in a way makes sense to socket a topaz to a sword.

Also I can't wait for the release
