ExtremeTech recently posted a list of games from yesteryear that "just won't die". Diablo II was mentioned right at the top o' the list and here's what they had to say about it:
"1. Diablo II
Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment
Will it Run on Vista? Yes
Still Available? Yes
Widely hailed as the greatest action RPG of all time, Diablo II has legions of clones and followers, but none have come close to gripping the enthusiasts as much as Blizzard's powerhouse. You can get both Diablo II and its expansion, Lord of Destruction, plus strategy guides, at the link above for $40.
The game features five character types, each with its own range of abilities, but it's the interface that made Diablo II, and its predecessor Diablo, what they are. So move, you simply click. To attack, click. You can access various functions like a map or your special abilities through hotkeys?or you can click
While Diablo had something of a story, Diablo II is far more plot-driven, involving taking on evil itself, and takes place throughout four acts. Lord of Destruction adds two character classes, a new campaign, and much more to the mix.
Keeping Diablo II alive, besides its core gameplay, is a host of mods. You can find them all over the Web simply by wielding the power of Google, but a good place to start is Diablo II Sector's Mods directory. You'll also find hacks, bots, and many more downloadables for the game
Of course, single-player gaming only goes so far, and Blizzard still supports Diablo II multiplayer via Battle.net. And there's still a thriving Diablo II community, playing and trading items with their Realms characters (as opposed to "Open" or locally-stored characters). Even as Diablo III is in development, don't look for Diablo II to fade away just yet. The upcoming sequel doesn't yet have a release date. If you crave action-RPG clickety-click frenetic gaming, look no further than Diablo II."
So how many of you are still playing Diablo 2 on a regular basis? Do you think that'll all change once Diablo 3 comes out or will you still play the second installment here 'n there?
Still confuzzles me that people call Diablo 2 an RPG. I mean, like the author states even, it is plot driven. It's not character driven. But yes, I am still playing D2, but only with the Eastern Sun mod. It's surprisingly fun and I'm still learning a lot.
Regular D2:LoD I simply cannot go back to playing again. But I do acknowledge it as one of the most replayed games of all time.
Ooh, and I see they included Fallout out as well. A wise choice. I'm confused though how he could mention Freelancer and not include a Wing Commander game on there.
I didn't realize Warcraft 3 that that prevalent really. It seems like even Warcraft fans don't care that much about Warcraft 3. I only hear talk about WoW.
Yeah, i still jump on DII every now and then; building up a character or getting some new loot. Doesn't make me happy that the article more or less supports bots and hacks. Once DIII is out, there will be no point for me to play DII anymore. It be like having filet and going back to flank steak or something.

Most people that play wow are mmo fans I find that never even played wc3(not to say lots of wc3 players dont play wow im sure they do). I think tho that most of the wc3 players now are just playing for dota which is seriously awesome
EDIT: Cant wait for the ladder reset....ill be playing on ladder again for the first time since the first season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Diablo II's PvM was fun when I was younger, but as like a few of you said - you got into hacks/cheats/pk. PVP/trading was the best thing about the game because you could build your character to your own unique killing machine (pvm/pvp). Putting cookie cutter aside, it still was a good thing because it made followings and sites like d2jsp/original diablo3.com possible.
Im swamped with work and graduating college and I know I will put together some type of pc int he next week or so to atleast try out the new patch/ladder reset!
I know little games that are actually dead (aka not one person plays them). Or is this an old game popularity contest? Not sure what they mean when they say "won't die".

I think it's the most played games that have been out for a long time.
I started playing again at 1.12 cuz of the D3 announce and such. Also I lost interest to WoW lately.. so I've been playing D2 again every now and then in battle.net.

Warcraft 3 is prevalent still, even if it's only because of DotA.
Kidding me? I still play the first Diablo. Im probably one of the few. Im probably one of the few that think Diablo is better than Diablo II. Oh well. Im a Warcraft III and Starcraft gamer as well I play WoW once in a while though. Getting into Warcraft III again tryin to get better. (Also Diablo2 classic is better than LoD)

When Diablo III comes out I'll probably store Diablo I, II, and Lod away in my game closet, and probably not go back to it for a few months or years.
Unless they somehow screw up DIII, I won't go back to DII until maybe D4 was announced, or unless its 2015, and I want to remember what its like to play.
What I thought was really funny and weird, is that we complain SHIT LOAD about our favorite game of all times. It makes me realize that I'm not sure why I love the game so much..Why did I play this game for 10 years?

"Not Even Death Can Save You From Me" ~ Diablo (II)
I still play D2, in fact I was playing it earlier today with my fiancee, my brother, and my friend. I doubt I'll be playing it much after Diablo 3 comes out... maybe some years down the road I'll get the nostalgic urge to bust it back out and play it again. After all, I still play all the old Mario and Zelda games from time to time. In my eyes Diablo 2 is just as epic as those titles.

Yeah, it's mostly DotA, but there is still some melee going on as well I think. Not too up to date on that part of WC3.
Anyway, I definately enjoyed Freelancer just last year, and it just goes to show what a game can accomplish when it can be modded. Great game that.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
Diablo 2 is truly a legend. I remember going to my Grandfather's house years and years back when there was only Diablo 1, and watching him play, I never knew I'd be falling in love with it. I went home and begged my parents to buy me a copy, and then when Diablo 2 came out, I instantly bought a copy, and from then on, it was my life so to speak.
I don't think Diablo 2 will die just because of Diablo 3, just as people still play the old Starcraft, warcraft, and diablo games, so will others play Diablo 2. Perhaps even it's just a simple reason as "My computer can't handle it" or "I don't have the money to go and buy myself a copy". It will still be played, for years and years to come.
Also, sometimes you just cannot beat the classics. Diablo 2 was the birth of Diablo in my opinion. Sure, the original Diablo was great, was the start of something great, but it's just not qualified to be considered as a legend. Diablo 2, on the other hand, was the start of it all, the real plot, the remarkable gameplay and customization, randomity that was put into it made it excel. It was the prized game of the gaming industry for computers, and so shall it continue to be, just Diablo 3 will most likely overtake it, hopefully :P.

Bought it a few weeks ago.
When D3 comes out I probably won't play D2 very often.
