Diablo 2 featured a much greater range of socket-able item types than we currently have in D3 including Gems, Jewls and Runes, while blizzard has announced that there will be a diamond gem do you think there is a place in diablo 3 for another kind of socketable such as jewls and if so what would its purpose be within the greater item system?
Personally i would like to see some new kind of socket-able added to the game, to create greater item variety and opportunities for customisation.
Not only we need more socketable items, like jewels, but the whole socket system needs a complete overhaul.
I find quite bland that our current gems give us a different bonus only if we insert them in weapons or gems while other slots have a primary stat bonus.
It would be nice to have socket bonus like in WoW, but worthwhile to activate. In WoW, most of the time, you are ignoring the socket bonus because stacking the main stat is better, so they need to be balanced accordingly.
I don't think we will ever see socketable runes; Blizzard said it often that runewords are built into the skill system we have now, but Jewels with a couple of random affixes could be a nice touch to empower some secondary stats on top of the Paragon 2.0 we are getting soon™ could lead to a bit more of customization, or just stack the same flavor or the month stat over and over...
Yes, the D2 system was much better. But more socketable items would have the prerequisite of turning "socketed" into a base item type instead of a magic affix.
WoW's system was already dumbed down a lot and only introduced because they had to release a new profession.
Path of Exile deserves a mention for its very interesting system that combines sockets with skills. For example (for those who don't know it) you can combine a "Lightning Bolt" skill gem with a "Multiple Projectiles" skill gem and voilà you're shooting multiple lightning bolts. Yes, that's what the runes in D3 do, but you can combine more than just two gems

yeah i would like to see them do something cool or interesting and innovative with sockets, what they have now is a simple but solid foundation and i'm hoping they will build on it far more.
clearly they could incorporate this into the crafting system as well. making gems an element in crafting recipes which result in a new kind of socket-able would also act as a good gold sink.
Would love seeing more socket slots Diablo 2 style 6 slot items. And maybe a tuned down version of the old rune words..
Tuned down in the way that you can just put them in your legendaries without making it overpowered (no breath of the dying).
They're planning on putting spell changing abbilities on legendaries. Might aswell make runewords that do exactly that.
"Greater range of socket-able item types" means more items that can be put in sockets? Or more gear slots that can roll sockets (Belts, Bracers, rare Gloves, rare Boots)?

Yeah this need clarification. I'm all for more things to put in sockets but I'm against more things that can roll sockets. We have enough sockets already.

the intended meaning was items that can be inserted into sockets, since at the moment sockets cant be created no armor/weapons are socket-able was my train of thought. They can have sockets obvs but they dont have the ability to become socketed therefore not socketable.
There's certainly some ambiguity there though thanks for pointing that out!--updated poll q.
I did love the Jewels system in Diablo 2, would definitely love to see something like that in D3.
I'm thinking Jewels can go into a secondary item slot system, where you can't put gems, and they only roll secondary stats. That way we can focus on the quality of life from the Jewels and leave the main sockets for the gems that increase main/offensive/defensive stats.
The first option seemed to be the more obvious one indeed.
I like the idea, as variety is a big deal for me in games like Diablo 3, and things like that usually add variety to the "item game". But the way some items are limited in sockets now, I don't see a system like RuneWords coming back (so few sockets).
Jewels at first seemed like a pretty cool idea (and they looked/felt awesome when leveling up), but they were kinda "meh" on end-game. Because they were also just a mix of random stats, nothing really unique about that. I like over's ^ idea about it, though.
More complex answer: yes, after they fix some of the more-lackluster benefits that gems currently have (emeralds and topazes in helm, topazes and amethysts in weapons, amethysts in armor).
What bothers me the most is the lack of option to add a socket to an item. I mean right now on console, i find an amazing two hander but it has no sockets so it instantly loses much of it's potential value.
About the socketables, sure, if they can balance them and make them interesting enough. I like the jewels from D2, they roll random stuff in a way that you could put a jewel that increased your damage and attack speed, on an armor peice and not only on a weapon.
I'd like to see more socketables and overneathe's idea of a secondary slot seems an interesting one.
Also they could give Shen the chance to combine gems and some craftable (maybe obtained by salvaging jewels you drop) to craft jewels with a specific set of properties.
Add recipes and tomes and it would add a bit more to crafting.
If any of these ever happens I hope they will raise the gems/crafting materials stacking cap since I already have half a tab full of the stuff.
Or introduce a dedicated stash.
@Elendiro: that's definitely the problem imho been saying it since release.
Lower the maximum crit damage by half (both on rolls in gear and gems) and you instantly have some options. 100% bonus damage on a reasonable crit chance 30-40% is just waaaaay too much DPS to pass up.
surprised nobody has made an xzibit meme along the lines of, 'yo dawg, I heard you like sockets, so we put a socket in your socket, so you can socket while you socket.
consensus is a beautiful thing, sometimes you need to start with a higher level question before jumping into details haphazardly, maybe it's good enough to just say "more socketables would be nice" and let developers figure out the details.
Given that we have multiple sockets in some items i dont think the enchantress is a replacement, you could re-roll a socket affix for example trying to get additional sockets and still be left with the limited choice of gems to put into them.
Affixes themselves have some massive problems which are very well discussed but lets not let the Affix problem hinder discussion about Socketable's
Assuming a fixed affix system then i think 'jewls' which can randomly roll any affix and be inserted into any piece could work, i also think allowing 'jewls' to roll higher values for affixes relating to skill damage or elemental damage could be very interesting because it would create tradoffs against the big 4.
