I feel by describing what I intend to do with Diablo 3 may be helpful in explaining my thoughts on this thread. First off I intend to level every class with what I call my "Mains" that will be the ones I have a good ole fun time with and just do all sorts of casual good ole fun stuff. I will use them to learn how to do encounters efficiently so that when I play Hardcore mode I stand a better chance at playing those characters.
Fact is that I will likely lose quite a few Hardcore toons during this process. I'm fine with that, I can always re-roll them. As for the gear, I believe you can put gear you don't need into the Shared stash for your hardcore toons. If I remember this right, once you out level your gear and put it in the Share stash if you die your new toon can use it.
So I think Blizzard just took the mechanic that you feel is gone and made it more of a constructive process, from my point of view anyhow. Instead of it just being a way of biding your time, it functions as a sort of real mechanic. Stash away what you may want to send to your new guys and hopefully he will out level his elders.
Don't forget grailing. I played D2 single player mostly, and after 10 years of on again, off again playing (with a few mat/pats), I haven't found half of the uniques. Never found a SOJ either. Collecting is one of the things I enjoyed about D2, and It kept me playing for a long time.

Also you've got achievements you may want to do. It is possible that some of them you have to do with low level characters or they can't be get. One of the aches may be getting all characters to 60, same with hardcore. But honestly for those who loves to reroll, playing hardcore is the best option as you will be forced to do so
This obsession with re-rolling is perhaps something to see a therapist about, although they'll likely just charge you to be your "friend" but then perhaps you can get yourself some nice pharmaceuticals.......
You can use them yourself if you need. Makes leveling easier when your not decked in crap.
Alts? Not every item that drops is going to be for your toon.
Ohh and you can sell them on the AH.
Give it to a friend.
Basically all these things involve leveling. The problem is you made a false premise in your original statement. You initially assumed that they weren't useful and then went on to discuss what to do about it.

One is never hurt by being given additional choices, only by taking them away. A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
You will use uniques while you're leveling through the 3 lower difficulties. They are not useless.
You might keep some low level gear in order to twink other character classes.
You cna give the low level gear to your low level friends or selling it on the AH.
Theres a hardcore mod. In this mod you will reroll whenever you die. Keeping some neat low level gear will surely help you if you want to have a high level HC character.
Some people will reroll even if they don't need too. In Diablo i usually make new characters whenever i want to play coop with soemone. Theres no point in cooping with my level 10 girlfriend using my high end toons. But twinking us might be really cool !
D3 is not a futile game. The beta has 40 min of content but i've played 14 hours already (and i kno people with 40 hours or so O_O).
I feel that "re-rolling" is far from pointless. Sometimes it's simply fun to go back and just restart for the fun of it. No need for unique stats or skills - the fun is in the play. Twinking I think it's called. That's the reason for low level uniques.
People forget that out of millions of people playing diablo 2 not many completed all difficulty levels and had lvl90s chars.... only the dedicated and very determined thousands was able to achieve it. It was not untill people found new ways to rush and powerlevel their chars from 1 to 80 in few hours did diablo 2 hold their interest. But sadly, these same set of people have selective memories.. they still live in diablo 2 world... when diablo 3 is now the new game. Get use to it, for blizzard to make diablo 3 a huge success they need > a million people playing it and keep playing it with RMAH. Otherwise they are not even going to make any money out of it.
All I have to say on this is nothing is stopping you from re leveling a toon, just like you did in D2. The only difference is you're not forced too. I'd rather have the option not too level if I want to try a different build, so don't force me to have to.
This is such a fake argument that it actually got me physically upset. Let me spell it out for you: I can't re-roll new characters because of the 10 character limit. Understand now? That's the fucking issue, and nobody even mentioned it in three pages. I'll eventually have to delete someone, and who says I'm done with that character?
Another good point was mentioned by italofoca. My mate just bought D3 and I've had it for a few months. Naturally, my 10 slots are already filled (and I'm not done with any of the 10 chars). Obviously, I don't really wanna play with a lvl 50 ou 60 char with my mate's lvl 1 char. What happens then? Let me anticipate some of the responses: "just delete a toon"; "tough luck, bra"; "that's a niche situation; get over it".
Nope, read the sig.

Whaaaaaa..... ok. So following your logic (and personal attacks, nice argument mentality) How many character slots did you have in D2? Did you have enough room for every build of every class? YOU DIDN'T?!? Oh wow. Strange. So you're upset because there's a 10 character limit, and to make 5 sc and 5 hc = 10 toons, and if you maxed them out, you can't re roll a new toon to level because you'd have to delete one. That makes sense, and I see your point. MY argument is, what did you do when you maxed your D2 toons? And following that, if builds WERE set in stone for D3, you would have even less room for every build? I'm confused at what you want. If you wanted unlimited toon space, just say it.
But I'll say my argument again, nothing is stopping you from leveling a toon, and re leveling it. There's no need to re level anymore to try a different build. So if you have such a hard on to level again even though you have access to every build, then you're probably ok with either deleting the toon, or, wait for it, selling it on the AH.
What you want is to force every other player to have to re-roll, because YOU want to constantly re roll. Not only is that selfish, it doesn't make sense. Just like D2 had a cap on players, so will D3. Just, um, you know, do what you did in D2 when you maxed toons.
Maka, the only issue I have with your most recent argument is that you only "need" 5 toons as mains. The rest are delete-able, I'm hoping this is a bit more in-depth then what you were expecting. See the thing is that 5 toons gets you the maximum potential for trying stuff out. If you level 5 more, and they are different specs, no biggy. Your friend comes over and now has the game, are you seriously going to keep both of your Barbarians? I mean if they want to level up with you, you can't delete the one in greens, you know since you've hardly had time for him.
I'm sorry but your acting like deleting a toon is genocide or something. Just realize that you have one toon that can stand as a man, and work with it.
I never really understood the enjoyment in making new characters. The only time I chose to do so was because I had took so long of a break from D2 that I wanted to go through the story/quests step by step. I never enjoyed the idea that I had to plan out my whole skill/stat allocation or my character that I played for weeks would be gimped. Then again, that's just one man's opinion. If I ever have more than five characters (after the 1 of each class that I plan on making), it's to play with someone who's new to the game or is making another character so we can level at the same time.

Maka, is still stuck in diablo 2 world he cant accept change for diablo 3. Best part the game is not even release and he is crying he needs more than 10 characters slots cause he is so pro that he needs to make a char that noone has.
This whole thread just shows how wrong D2 was. The point of low lvl uniques should be that you find them and use them right away, not that you will use them on another character. Maybe in D3 we'll finally be able to play the game instead of rushing all the time.
No I completely agree, but I will take it even further and say that ALL gear in Diablo 3 is useless.
In the last 7 years we have not heard or seen any gear that has any + SKILL modification stats. There won't be different gear for different builds. You simply pick the gear that has the best basic stats, and that's it. A billion different skill combinations, one set of gear.
Rare, Set, Legendary.. meaningless names of equipment at this point.
Unless we have gear that directly changes the way a build functions, then ALL gear choices are pointless at every level.
seems with the direction the game has taken to make 5 lvl 60's and farm inferno that low level uniques and set items was a waste of developement since no one will want to reroll after they get 5 lvl 60's. I remember using my sigons set at low level then switch it out for other gear. Now whats the point? There is none. If your goign to make a game based around everyone staying at lvl 60(not to mention you can just buy lvl 60's on the AH) 95% of the items in this game are useless unless they are inferno quality.
You obviously have never played WoW; any item even low ones are worth something. Someone out there will want to be twinked at level 15 if they can be.
keep thinking you will be able to use a lvl 5 unique to craft your lvl 60 legendary bow...
Let me know when you come back to reality.
Well now that you mention it, it would be awesome if low level uniques yielded a very small amount of materials while letting high lv uniques yeild a very high amount of materials. Different crafted items or skills that consume materials could just be adapted to require high amounts of materials. Think about it. People could recycle crap stuff to give them a itty bit more towards their goal, but they wouldn't farm Act1 for materials, they would obviously hit the final act to yield large amounts of materials.
Just seems like a simple and possible way of going about it.

Some people tell me I'm going to hell. I just let them know that I've already packed my bags!
I can't comment on your need of re-rolling it's just a waste of personal opinion time. The depth has focused on obtaining end game gear, not re-rolling.
^ This. More time at end game, less time at leveling. I think this is a good thing.
You can always level a character with a different build than you used the first time if that is what you like to do. But, now you don't have to level a new character if you want to try a new skill. Sorry, but I fail to see any issues with this approach.
The issue is that that there are NO consequences just handholding all over the place. People should have to think about their decisions and be responsible for it if you screw up....re-roll simple as that.
Currently this game has NO consequences at all not even a death penalty, hope they change that.
Durability losses and they can be quite expensive and there are a bunch of money sinks in the game. It hasn't been till my second full level 13 beta char that I've had excess money. You don't like it play HC, and your comment has nothing to do with low level uniques you just keep bitching about the same thing over and over on different threads.
