It appears that as time passes people are beginning to see the wizard for what she really has become over the past few patches, a limp noodle that has no true niche. Sure she has a lot of AoE, but only in the same sense as a hoarder has a lot of 'antiques'.

"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"
I agree with the OP that the wiz is not stacking up to par with the other classes in the beta. I've usually played through using the wizard on each patch and something doesn't feel right during the last few.
Maybe it's just the currently available early game skills?... I remember having electrocute felt reasonably strong, even after its reduction in power.
Personally, I was quite unhappy with the range reduction to shock pulse. It felt really cool to lay down a carpet of lightning and the current version feels more like an extended range spectral blade.
Our experiences really are based on a tiny chunk of the game, even so, you'd hope that at release even the early parts are more enjoyable.
Hopefully Blizzard will deliver a satisfying play experience for all classes when the game goes live.
I would roll wizard but the ratios are not as high as i would of hoped. Even factoring in dmg % increase from passives/skills It doesn't impress me.
I agree 100%, the #s just don't seem to be there.

i was srsly uninterested in wiz until i found "my build". its awesome <3
its gonna be my second char playing now! before it was the 4th!
btw, the % are there if you play it all together in a smart way my build will have insane damage, quite risky even if i got ALLOT of control, but still risky!
My personal opinion is even less telling, but I think I had the most fun this weekend with a wizard using Ray of Frost and Spectral Blade. I had always thought spectral blade looked like an idiotic skill to even have as a wizard, but it's somehow just amazingly fun to use. Go figure...
Looks like it's roughly split between Monk/Barb, then Wiz/DH, and the poor 3rd world Witch Doctor in last place.
Was already planning on playing WD, but even happier to be rooting for the under(world)dog, hwa ha ha.
Removing the ray of frost sleet storm glyph makes the wizard a lot more boring in the beta. That was a pretty disappointing change. Now, we can't have a melee wizard in normal difficulty... which happens to be the one difficiulty where he would have the least trouble dying. It's an odd choice if that change stays for retail.
It's not hard to see why this is the case, given the limited amount of the game we get to play with each class. The real skill/fun in playing the Wizard class is going to come much later in the game, when you get a chance to really start tweaking which stats you will stack and which runes you will use. Sure, the Wizard feels defensively weak and/or perhaps even underpowered to some at the start of the game, but you'll be playing your Wizard much, much more at the END of the game, and I think that's where the class will shine.

i would choose my own religion and worship my own spirit, but if he ever preached to me i wouldn't want to hear it. i'd drop him, a forgotten god, languishing in shame; and then if i hit stormy seas, i'd have myself to blame.
It's hard to judge the classes by what you see in the beta. I did all classes to 13 and the thing that struck me the most is that there was a rather clear hierarchy of the ability to make things go boom.
The static charge thingy with the rune did have a slight knockback effect, but there just wasn't anywhere near the same level of satisfaction as it was with the barb. With the wizard you run up and wave your hand a bit, the sound effect is reminiscent of a subtle power station or something, and the monsters are knocked a few yards *yawn*. With the barb you jump into a huge heap of shit, you swing your huge weapon with tremendous force, the impact noise is like a house falling down on itself ten times over and then everything in front of you explodes 300 meters in every direction and it's all illuminated by lightning flashes.
The secondary scenario is by far the most appealing to me. Now, this might change as you get access to new skills later on, but from what I saw it seems like the wizard has a much more subtle design vision to it. If the barb is a lightning strike then the wizard is a static charge when you grab a piece of metal.
Wiz - 1:36 (missile and orb spam, diamond skin to tank every thing)
There is why it took you longer to kill him. Orb is an AOE spell not really single target. Before you say it has higher damage, it is far out weighed because of the Arcane power cost. If you would have used ray of frost, and maybe even frost nova to freeze him every once in a while, I think you would have taken him down a lot fast as that is better for single traget dmg.
