Does anyone else think this? I've just finished my second playthrough of Act 4 and I had this feeling once again.
1) Perhaps I'm EXTREMELY unlucky - but I didn't like the side dungeons in my first playthrough on normal. None of them were big and winding - just small rooms. Sometimes when I finished them, I was left thinking - "so what else... where's the chest???". I assumed that this was just a unlucky roll for the zone and that when I play through on Nightmare, there would be bigger and better ones. This didnt't happen. In fact, I got side dungeons that are EXACTLY the same again.
There is no/little randomization in Act 4?
2) The act is just way shorter than the rest. It just feels like they threw it together and didn't have that same lengthiness like all the others. If anything, THIS one of all should not feel this way.
Have you even played D2? There were only three quests in Act 4 in comparison to six in the others. And also only three waypoints when the other Acts had about nine. So the fact that they kept the precedent doesn't surprise me one bit.

I don't always burn. But when I do, I use hellfire.

Take it a step further. There was only 1 mandatory quest in there.
Yeah, it's kind of lame. I don't like how it's mostly... bam random boss and then a very quick quest and then... bam random boss. The pacing in the level is way off. They didn't spend much time working on Act 4, it's pretty obvious.
The sooner people realize a couple things the better it will be.
A. Diablo 3 was largely made by a entirely different group of people than D2 was. They took bits and pieces of D2 and threw WoW elements into it.
B. The Blizzard of today is NOT the same Blizzard most of us grew up with. Instead of moving forward and stepping the gameplay up a lot. (IE Diablo > DIablo 2 or the original Warcraft games 1-3) They take the easiest/laziest route and tell us they know better if anyone says otherwise.
I'm sorry but saying Diablo 2's act 4 was short is not really an excuse. Don't get me wrong I enjoy the game for what it is but it sitll is a huge disappointment. It's very short and in the amount of time it took them to release this it shoulda dwarfed Skyrim in terms of size and content.
It actually makes sense if you've ever done film or story work. You kill Azmodan and think you're done with your quest. Suddenly Adria betrays you and now there's an impending threat with a ticking clock. Suddenly Diablo is loosed on Heaven. The climax. You have to rush to save Heaven before existence is completely compromised. You can't keep a climax going too long or it feels drawn out. You go to Heaven to stop Diablo, not find someone's crown and put it back on their head so you can go down some stairs they were sitting on and then four other trivial things before killing Diablo. If Act IV was the same length as the others, then while you're off doing quests, what's big D doing at the Crystal Arch? Playing cards with his multiple personalities?
Whaaaaaat!? Act 4 is my favorite act, just ahead of A3 then A1 and A2 is just too long, but I hated it in D2 aswell feels like the same place lol. In A4 start off bam miniboss I was soo happy to find this out. Next fight in a beautiful heavenly setting, and bam miniboss. So many bosses and the entire area looks awesome. Yes its short, but I was exhasuted from Acts 1-3 It was a welcoming length and enjoyable act.
At least in D2, act 4 had it's own town. When I was running act 4 I kept thinking when am I getting into the town to see some cool heaven fortress or something with some new npcs and then bam, 'kill diablo' lol. In D3 act 4 it's implied for you to complete it in one swing. It's just 99% linear.
To make act 4 longer, they would have had to have made it entirely different and completely changed the story. The way Act 4 works, both in length and pacing just makes sense to me.
You're chasing Diablo into heaven and ultimately toward the Crystal Spire.
Diablo is throwing his minions at you to slow you down so (s)he has time to drain the energy of the spire.
You really don't have time at this point for long sidequests. You rescue the archangel along the way to restore hope to the Angels and they are able to put up a better fight against the rest of Diablo's forces while you press on.
The whole act was basically a chase scene, where Diablo is 2 steps ahead of you and you're just trying to catch up in time. A long drawn out chase scene would have been dreadful.
The only act I wasn't a huge fan of was Act 2, and even A2 wasn't bad, especially compared to A2 of D2...
Act 4 was my favorite act... Seems odd someone would think its hastily thrown together at all. Its a chase scene. You have a few random dungeon spawns that can happen. Reminds me of the crumbling vaults without the timer. The whole act just shuffles you along while you try to contend with significantly harder mobs and bosses. The look is COMPLETELY different from the other acts as well. I'm pleased to not end up in hell again in the last act. That was getting bland. Only thing I didn't like was Imperius. But I don't think you're supposed to like him.
*edit* Oh! And to the person above who talked about WoW elements/grinding/silliness... Really? Have you played a video game? I'd like to see a game where you don't do exactly that. Skyrim was universally acclaimed and that farming was 100x worse than any MMO. Heck, some FPS games do this. I dunno about BF3 but in BF2 you slowly got ranks so that you unlocked new weapons. Racing games=grinding races to get cash to improve your car. RTS=play as much as you can to improve slightly. *shrug* If you don't like video games don't play them and post on their fansites.
I like how when you criticize something about D3 and do a comparison with D2, then everyone points to the fact its not D2, yet you use the same argument to justify other aspects of the game.

I liked act 4, it just felt like they threw so much at you at once. The plot does a 360 that you have to sum up in a short act. It sucks that all the monsters in act 4 were awesome because you don't get to see them much. I was hoping later difficulties would mix up the kinds of monsters you run into during acts so you could see more of them.

Careful now. Don't take your opinions as facts. Comparing the game to WoW and not knowing what you are talking about is trolling.

Grinding for mats. That is a very typical MMO-style system that forces people to invest a lot of time for decent upgrades.
People definitely did not grind for hours on end for runes in D2. They definitely didn't grind for rare drops either.
