That's all good and fine. I guess I'm just not sure how much of the loot finding system is something I want to rely on.
i feel the same way a little
    Quote from kontankarite

Yeah, loot was vastly important in Diablo 2, but I sort of always felt that leveling certain skills and using your stat allocation properly was pretty much what makes or breaks a decent build.
a lot of people would fight you tooth and nail for that comment lol, since d2's stat and skill system was very unbalanced.

    Quote from kontankarite

I have this impression that even though I can plan ahead of time and try to build my character exactly the way I want, I just feel that I'd have to answer more to a roll of the dice when it comes to item drops.

Honestly, it doesn't sound attractive to me. I'm definitely going to wait until others have actually played it and can explain what's really going on under the hood of the game. To me, right now, it sounds initially frustrating.

Thanks for the clarification, dudes. It was a big help.
I hope it turns out above mediocre. if it turns out to be a masterpiece, then all the better...lets all hope it will =)

i don't think OP wanted per se an expanding story, but rather he threw one out so people wouldn't be saying, "well look we have inferno mode for end game"

he wanted some other form of end game outside of arena pvp we currently have and progressively higher difficulty is how i interpreted

exactly. I hate to bring WoW into it but it's the best example I can thing of, you get the gear you run raids and expand the endgame that way. As it is now you get the gear and then what? My biggest issue is wasting my accomplishments, in this case i beat 4 difficulties, got gear, worked out my build, all that....now what? level an alt and do it again? just feels like a waste to me when something more should happen, I feel like I should be building towards a goal like if you go through all the acts and all that and THEN kill diablo or something like that, I could deal with that
the somewhat good news for you is that during those story mode difficulties there will be quests. I think some of the quests were randomly generated (been a while i can't remember) and there were a lot more quests than compared to d2. We don't have details to this, so it will depend on how blizzard fleshed out questing... i hope it's good. it's like the only thing i'm hoping for at this point tbh

    Quote from kontankarite

So there's no actual manual control over stats?
    nope
    Quote from kontankarite

I understand that Diablo 3 is based more on what you find in loot. That loot is the key factor in character customization.
    yep
    Quote from kontankarite

Does this mean that MOST of the character customization process is inherently luck of the draw?
    pretty much
    Quote from kontankarite

What's this I read about traits? Is that like Feats in Fallout 3?
    never played, can't comment
    Quote from kontankarite

If I actually want to make a glass cannon wizard, I have to find the appropriate gear and if I can't find that gear, then I'm just going to have to do with what I find as far as a build goes? Let's assume that I'm not interested in trading at all for now.
your characters have some passives you may choose (unlocked by level) that allows you to customize to *some* (very limited imo) extent on how you want your characters to be.
    Quote from kontankarite

If that's the case, you COULD theoretically be playing an entire game of chance and not any real and carefully planned build ideas?
pretty much. all the fan boys will disagree though.
    Quote from kontankarite

I'm asking because what I've heard about character customization is pretty much nothing resembling what I am familiar with as far as Diablo goes and I guess I'm just looking for some clarity.

    Thanks again.
if you're talking about customization in terms of visuals then: dyes, gender.

if you're talking about customization in stats/skills: none

if you're talking about customization in items: runes customize skills, gems customize equips

    Quote from Anguloce

The reason people aren't accustomed to just going ahead and plugging them in is, if I remember correctly, it is up to the game developer to add that functionality and support. Say with the Xbox; Microsoft forbade mouse and keyboard support to differentiate it from a PC. With the 360, that rule isn't there anymore. You can use a keyboard to type with MSN and other chat functions, even entering names and passwords, but mouse function isn't there. The task is up to the developer.

From what I gather, Sanguis is trying to say console kids won't use Mouse&Key, simple. A game coming to a console will most likely draw the console crowd. Should the game work as intended, it will be playable with the native controller and there should be no need for the support (a want is different than a need, remember that).

Why no mouse and keyboard? Ask the player, or the dev.
if that's true then i can see how. I only own ps2, the rest are handhelds.

I know that the game should be made to accommodate for controller commands, but even with that said, for a lot of types of games, it's strange, if not stupid to not want to use a mouse. Like... starcraft lol.

    Quote from ggillesp

yes, I understand that now. however, this can and would be an optional mode, not all players are viable to this mode and it should not be forced. Have they stated whether or not they will have hardcore for solo?
That's the point. If the drops are uber, then diablo players want to be able to solo it, otherwise they bring up stupid stuff like teamplay in WoW.

i.e. if the drops are better in your incinerate option and forces people to do teamplay, no one wants it.

I'm not sure what you mean by will not have hardcore for solo. Hardcore is hardcore whether or not you play by yourself (private game) or with others...

like take the time to find/buy mouse and keyboard O_O?

More like take the time to hook it up to their game console and bother using it aside from their controller which they are aware is perfectly meant for their console. Most console people are also not computer gamers, so using a control interface that they are not fully familiar with could deter them.
    O_O

dude i'm shocked. plugging in a keyboard mouse is no harder than plugging in your controller. Also, in this day and age, i'm surprised that people are not accustomed to using mice and keyboards O_O. (excluding third world countries)

Makes sense. They didn't mention commonality though did they?

    Also, paranoia:

They only show those three cause they're the primary colors right? Do we still have 5 rune types?
I would laugh if it was 3.

I would probably laugh harder if they said 5 was too many and redundant.
