50 level 6 gems per hour would be less than a gem a minute, which really wouldn't be all that unreasonable in higher difficulties considering the level 6 gems by themselves are pretty useless. And as I said in the OP, simply raising it to level 7 gems dropping in combat would make it so that you only need about 2k dropped gems for a level 14. Obviously if a level 6/7 or whatever drops in game is as hard to find as a perfect in D2 then it would get ridiculous.
We still dont know what it takes to make a higher lvl gem, it might be different from D2. I just thought of this: to get a higher lvl gem you might not even need more than one gem to get the next higher level. You might be required to have a chipped gem and maybe some of the raw material created from the nephalem cube to make a flawed (given to the jeweler of course).
Can you combine gems in more ways than one? I know that combine, in the sense in which we're using it, most likely means add more than one gem of the same type, amounting in a higher tier gem, but what if it turns out that you can make hybrid gems, like a sapphire-diamond?
I know it's probably not going to be in the end game, but it was just one of those thoughts that I thought was pretty cool.

I hate the way you cling to ignorance and pass it off as innocence
Guys, you're forgetting that we get up to what? 7 active skills right? So it isn't just 19k gems but 19k x 7. Now THAT is a bit too much even for the hardcoriest of players, dontcha think?

I agree with feminism. I don't think that it's right that for every dollar a man makes, a women gets 70 cents. Why do I only get 30 cents and some chick gets the rest?
It really just depends of what long term really is. If long term means taking about 5 months to get 1 or 2 level 14 gems then im fine with it as long as their isnt some gear update a month later that makes my high tier armor/weapons obsolete. But if by long term they mean about a year or more than not the slightest. Especially since their are 6 different variations of gems to choose from dedicating that much time to just one is hard to imagine, plus very boring.
19000 level 5 gems sounds like a very high number, a number which i would not like to grind nor craft for.
If I can't get a single gem at level 15 in a single relatively intensive week of playing, and anybody think thats good for a long term goal, then you have no life. Maybe I'm just not a kid anymore, yet I still put so much time in games but I still can't help thinking that this is a ridiculous waste of time.
Long term goals shouldn't mean -waste your life on it to get it-. This is Diablo we're talking about, and reaching the maximum level should not even be very long to begin with, even without rushing.
I kinda hope this is the case. In my opinion 512 gems is still a hefty number, for 1 lvl 14 gem, but it is still much more manageable. If the number would drop to half that then I would have been happy.
Yeah, I think it'd be better to only have to combine two gems and just have fewer drop. Same amount of time, less tedious to collect and transmute. People always get so melodramatic when it comes to drop rates - as if it would take either a year or a week to get some particular item. Hard to believe, I know, but it's actually possible to find a reasonable middle-ground.
i dont want gems becoming a long term goal and dominating the item enchants block. gems are boring. if enchants were more aesthetic and were more of a long term goal i wouldnt mind but i dont think this is the case as far as types are concerned.
All as drops and an expected achievement for higher level characters plux.
I'd like for them to be a long term goal. I mean there's no shame in using a lesser gem if everyone else has just as hard of a time getting the higher ones. It's always good to have long term goals.
I think 19k for a single radiant are a bit too much. I like long term goals but I also like to explore all the features in the game. As things are now it will be difficult for myself to try out how radiants will affect the game.
I would at least have a level or two more dropping in the game.
I hope they'd consider to have higher level gems dropping in act bosses loot and/or as a reward for some quests. (remember the Countess?)
Maybe we'll all find ourselves gem-farming instead of rune-farming, who knows?
And again we have to consider the possibility that Blizzard is trying to handle Diablo economy using rare stuff like radiants and such.
I didn't read any of the replies but I think it's good that they are making the top tier a little easier to obtain..
19k sounds like a really high number but of course we will never know how high of a number it really is until we actually have the game and have a high player base going for it, i dont even think Blizzard knows how long it really takes.
But I think droppable lvl 6 gems is a good compromise until we have more testing. And then it can be patched towards balance some time after release.
All gem levels should drop, otherwise this whole business is plain ridiculous.Long term goals in terms of...years? Lol.There's a huge freaking wall between hard-to-achieve and this-shit-is-just-stupid.Duping...yay!
Again gem is not like a rune in D2. If you don't get one - no problemo, just use lower one. Why do people think that they must use the highest level gem no matter what?
Cut that bullshit already. I don't give a fuck whether you get the radiant unicorn of doom or not.
I am talking about MY game experience here, irrespective of X, Y or Z having better loot than me. Just saying, since you are desperate to compare everybody to you.
You don't understand? Well I don't understand the rest of you wanting to spend years farming for gems either. What you want is your business. I am only voicing what I think of the idea of gems being so hard to get, not about why I don't want you to like the idea.
I carry on my way. Do the same and the whole world will be happier for it.
I say up to level 9(would take 2,187 gems to get to level 14 gems)/10(would take 729 lvl 10's to get to the level 14 gems) gems should drop this would leave some effort still to get the highest level gem, while giving casuals a chance at decent level gems
for me its better to be extremly hard to get last grade of gem.
Than if you somehow after few months playing got last grade of some gem you can say I am the man!
For all we know hell mobs will be dropping handfuls of level 6 gems at a time, and they stack to a thousand. 19k and 6.5k are large numbers, yeah, but without knowing how the game systems work we can't really say how easy or hard it's going to be.
Hope for gem shrines as well?

I already explained myself. Go look up the words in a dictionary, it might help.
You only quoted me because you wanted to whine about people not liking the idea.
Here is link. It contains my views on hard-to-get items.
Now go and read my earlier post and make that brain of yours work and you'll see you are just being obnoxious.
