I had this idea about a ranged-physical class, the one that is anticipated now that monk is revealed, but one that does not entirely depend on bows or javelins or shurikens or whatever it may decide to throw at poor demons, but also some spellcasting. And to differ this spellcasting substantialy from others, it would be spells that inflict physical and perhaps to a point magical damage. The word of coolness is telekinetic ability combined with sharp and flying objects.
So, the idea is to have a ranger that can manipulate objects with his mind either his own fired projectiles or use the destructibility of surroundings to get debris, accelerate arrows, hurl objects from the environment at high velocities at unsuspecting enemies, or something cool and telekinetic of sorts. I think you get the picture.
This would implement bows and throwing weapons into the game just fine, and the abilities would furthermore potentiate the usage of class-apropriate ranged weaponry, as well as add a whole new dimension of the destructible environment for this one class. this would spawn some PvP problems, and perhaps environment-dependance issue, but i have a few ideas to work around it, i bet guys at blizzard would make something cool up
So ranger - yes, but a cool telekinetic ranger with different playstyle then the Amazon or the rogue from D1. And ofc make heavy telekinetic/sharpshooting an occult practice to make the hero look mysterious and badass, just as necro was. If someone had this idea already i apologise, i'm new here. Hi everyone
Hi
I like that idea! Nice one. It puts an interesting spin on the standard archer character. I can kinda imagine shooting arrows that are accelerated by about x10 through occult magic, they could make it look ultra brutal on impact.
As long as they don't make it looking all "psychic" with an additional eye on his forehead and bent spoons hanging on his belt and all that stereotypical stuff. Not badass. But I'm confident Blizzard has good taste.
Most comments are silly, but there obviously has to be some character that will make use of bows, crossbows and other typically ranged weapons...
They won't relase a game that has a large part of weapons being dropped which are not being effectively used by any class
That being said, fifth class most likely will make use of at least that.

lol it can still easily be a ranger since who said you cant shoot arrows at melee distance xD

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees
That sounds pretty good Kenzai but do we have to assume that the D3 characters will effectively "sum up" all of the D2 characters?
Could it not be that the ranged class (supposing the 5th is ranged, which as you and others have pointed out seems very likely) has some entirely different aspects that are so far unseen in the Diablo series?
The reason I'm thinking this is: just because the assassin was referenced with the monk, it doesn't necessarily follow that druid-like features need to be implemented. That is to say, so far all of the D2 classes have been "represented", apart from the amazon and the druid, and it is clear that the amazon will be in some way reinvented with the ranged class, which leads some people to see a pattern and think that the druid will thus reappear, but it is not clear that the druid should reappear.
These are all interesting and plausible theories nonetheless. I suppose I'm just defending (and opening for discussion) what I shall call the "randomist" theory, i.e. the theory that the ranged class could have any kind of interesting angle to take it away from the archetypical ranged class. Thoughts?
Naw, not really  we're getting at exactly the same point but your jigsaw analogy definitely helped to make it clearer, cos my post was a bit... overly concise.
But getting back to the topic, it does seem a bit forced, considering that there is a near-infinite amount of interesting themes you could attach to "ranged class".
i like the idea of a 5th class that would be range.depending on this we have someone to use blow/crossbow.
But what about the shields we haven t seen a char yet in seriously use of shields as main or secondary weapon like pala.i am not a big fun of palas but there has to be someone that uses shields.any ideas?
It could be that the ranged class can also specialize in shields, depending on your skill tree, which is in fact exactly how the D2 amazon worked. I'm not too familiar with this but apparently the barb can also specialize in shields now.
But maybe there just won't be a class who has as big a "shield theme" as the pally did.
Now, this is highly unlikely, but it would blow my mind if the class was a master thrower.
I hated how in d2 the throwing weapons were practically useless.
I want a guy that'll fling a constant stream of axes, javs, pots, darts, etc. at the enemy. (Axes could double as melee weapons, too 0:]
Maybe a skill tree for throwing and the other for bows/crossbows/whatevers
So lets look at what we have got. The barb, simple... nothing changed from d2, character wise. Wizard, is just a revamp of the sorceress. THen there is Witch Doctor, i consider him a Necro with more badass abilities.
Now we have Monk, and if you look at the concept art, and the idea behind him, he is really a mix between assasin and paladin. He holy, and sneaky, fast and also uses claws of somesort.
Now logically, the only two classes left from d2 are Druid and Amazon. So i belive that the next class for D3 will be a mix between thoose two. Im thining a ranger with elemental abilities, and summonig powers, but also a darker character. Kind of like a Theif, you know with the hoods and the cloaks.
I cant really think of a great name for this char....
What you think?
They intro'd the monk with Act 2, so they'll probably intro the next class with Act 3, and if the Acts follow the same order as D2, it'll be a jungle.
I think an Amazon/Druid mix would be pretty likely, like an Amazon with bows, javelins, and pets as her three main skill trees.
In this case, I think they'll probably leave the mysterious hood and cloak class (like the rogue, or to some extent the necro) for an expansion.
Then again... a rogue could be pretty cool.
Too bad demonologist is out, seeing as how the final class has almost got to be physically ranged (and a demon summoner needs more than just one or two trees devoted to his evily spells)
But i would really like to see a range character that incorporates stealth and speed. Like a really cheeky dark character. That not only shoots down its enemies from afar but can also hold a close up battle by unleashes a whip to push monsters back.
I know whips are pretty shabby or not that strong, but blizzard could probobly create like a crazy metalic like hunter style whip that allows the range class to kill close up and from a distance since the whip has quite a far range.
But yea...havnt seen many characters using a whip and would love to see it incorporated in the game!! It would be a weopon used in that time rite?
So basically a Gypsy/Hunter Style character that uses bows, longbows, crossbows for range and whips for close/ medium range style fighter.
God only knows what those sick information withelding bastards cook in the pot for us
That's definitely a correct description. Blizzard are only making this game to torture us. And I reckon one day they'll announce that D3 is a practical joke just to see our reactions.
well i mean i'd love to see an amazon-like character return...but why do they have to follow what they always did? wouldn't a shape shifter like someone mentioned be really damn cool? I mean how awesome was the werebear or werewolf in diablo II with these new graphics a bear wolf whatever would look just absolutely sick it'd be awesome...yes previews titles and other games tell us the chance of having a bow class is 90% possible but a shapeshifter or actually anything else that they come up with would be cool to experience, i'm sure they will not stop at Diablo III and that we'll see everything and a lot more given the time.

I don't see why they wouldn't mix an amazon with a druid like the hunter druid build in Diablo II where you use a bow + summons. In a lot of games the ranged class manipulates pets...Guildwars is just one example of many others

Yeah... I'm not saying that they won't do that. I'm just saying that it's a slightly predictable move, and I'm also defending the idea that it's possible for a ranged class to be mixed with just about anything to create a really interesting and unique class (provided it's not inherently retarded, and that it's well thought out etc etc).
What I'm really hoping for is something along the lines of bow user / dark art user, but any interesting combination will suffice... by that logic I guess Blizzard is fully justified in making a bow user / druid-type... so now I'm just going around in circles. Bed time.

I like your whip Idea. It's definitely more original than a ranger who uses daggers or shortswords.
I am most definitely thinking of a mix between a druid and an archer. Dark cloaked looking character with a bow, but wild looking.. straight out of the forest. Not the jungle like the witch doctor.
It might be nice to have a single basic summon. Like the necomancer has a golem, this new character has something along those lines. Like a wolf or a dog. Unfortunately, we already have a zombie dog looking thing though
A whip in Diablo...didn't think of that. That could definitely work if done right. Have skills where the whip pulls people in, whips with sharp items on the ends & different variations (9 tails, for example) or the handle with a blade. *shrugs*
Could work, as long as it doesn't get too Castlevania-ish.

like a warrior from d&d too, but mixed a bit with ranger.. since we have 3 skill trees
so we'll have all weps covered, since barb is more for axe and heavy weps, monk 4 claws n stuf
archer is also a possibility but id have to go with ranger
gives a better feel for a bow user
