Alright, we tally 4/5 now so the question either on the edge, boiling over or safely nestled in the back of everyone's minds is, whats left?
Well thats exactly what this threads about. There are many theories going around already so I guess I will recap them quickly here first (not to mention name them mwhahah):
Last Man Out: This theory goes as follows, there currently exists a straight up Melee character aka mega man himself, The Barbarian. - Good covered
Next there should be a purely magic class, just like every single other game, and we got the Wizard. - Check
Every single Diablo fan cries out to the heavens for their beloved necromancer and voila, you don't get him but... you get this crazy dude with equally nutty spells instead (Common... Zombie wall? Zombies throwing up spiders? You know you love it.) The Witch Doctor. This character has summons, though not its focus as previously stated, curses and a bunch of mumbo jumbo to fill in the roll as a mysterious character. - Great
Every Diablo game had its flare of Holy, but after the shame of the WoW Paladin they were unfortunently whiped out of existance... But dont worry kids we got a killer substitute with, The Monk. This man with his big bushy beard reaches a top speed of 250km an hour, sure to leave a heavy dent on colission but be carefull, seatbelt not included. Holy character out to rid the world of evil as is his duty, can mix up a nice holy spell but without the frailness of a priest, sure to put his fist down for what he believes in. - Nice
What else could there possibly be next? Obviously the last character has to involve some sort of ranged specific class.
**sorry for being long winded X-X**
2nd theory
Gotsta Be a Rogue: Generally this theory revolves around the idea that the last class has to be a rogue because making a ranged class is too predictable and therefore is out of the question. You know because a Barbarian, Wizard, and a Monk are really unique. This theory has another flaw being that the rogue has been previously featured in the first diablo though one could point out that skills were not exactly class specific in that game so there wasn't much rogue-y-ness involved and it could be recycled. *Note: the monk from hellfire doesn't count because the expansion was not made by Blizzard it was made by Sierra and as such is not recognized as an official expansion, by me or Blizzard.*
And more theories but im writing way more then i thought i would.
Anyhoo to start this discussion off, I would like to re-iterate a concept previously discussed in some threads which involves the race of the current characters. More specifically though I would like to focus on the Cultures. As per this momment there are no characters who share a cultural backround remotely close with one another and neither was this the case in the previous installment aswell. This leads me personally to believe that the final character will aswell come from a unique background, comparatively to the other characters.
So, to FINALLY start off this discussion a few primer questions;
1. Thoughts of what said so far
2. Any knowledge of the lore in the areas suggested which would point to any certain type of people, culture or faction that comes to mind
3. Any other theories or ideas which you would like to suggest
4. Your personal selection for the last class and reasons why
.... And now i shall hold my peace for a while, lol
*EDIT* Oh forgot to mention that i personally see potential in the Skovos Isles though if the character hailed from the dark and mysterious Dreadlands I wouldn't argue either. Also removed the map because as pointed out there were some assumptions made in its creation lol. Though i still believe the cultural theory will still stand, hopefully >.>
Well thought out post, good job on that gave you some rep for it.
I am going to put it out there right now. the next Class will be the Ranger. I get this from a few things said during the D3 class panel
1) "We want our classes to pay homage to the old Pen and Paper RPGs" ( D&D and AD&D)
2) Witch Doctor, Barbarian, Monk and the Wizard are all classes from D&D and AD&D
3) So so far we have this break down of classes. 2 Melee dps, 2 caster types so we are missing a ranged physical of some kind and if you are going to be going out of the D&D books it has to be the Ranger OR the Arcane Archer. but my bet will be on the Ranger
I know most people expect a ranged specific class but even in diablo 2 the Amazon was no where near ranged specific. In fact most amazons were probably java after guided arrow got nerfed. So with that in mind id like to see blizzard break the monotony of predictability and whip out a class where not expecting, sure it may have to do with ranged attack somehow but who says it has to be about bow and arrows?
Towards the DnD characters, one of the most Iconic would be the Bard, who could use ranged weapons, though i kind of doubt we will witness his musical glory in diablo - however if you managed it blizzard I would give you props -
Besides bard there isn't much in the way of base classes left that fit the spot your looking for however so you may be right, time will tell.
I think the areas with map markers, I.E. watchtower looking things are probably the best guess for which we shall be exploring i doubt we will visit the isles though id like to know whats what down there
So lets look at what we have got. The barb, simple... nothing changed from d2, character wise. Wizard, is just a revamp of the sorceress. THen there is Witch Doctor, i consider him a Necro with more badass abilities.
Now we have Monk, and if you look at the concept art, and the idea behind him, he is really a mix between assasin and paladin. He holy, and sneaky, fast and also uses claws of somesort.
Now logically, the only two classes left from d2 are Druid and Amazon. So i belive that the next class for D3 will be a mix between thoose two. Im thining a ranger with elemental abilities, and summonig powers, but also a darker character. Kind of like a Theif, you know with the hoods and the cloaks.
I cant really think of a great name for this char....
I like everything you said in your first theory, except for 1 fact:
You stated that the Witch Doctor is just a revamp of the necromancer, and that the amazon and druid have yet to be included. However I think that the Witch Doctor is a mix of Necromancer and Druid together.
As for the final class, I am confident it has something to do with bows (duh?!). But, lol, as I was talking with Necronergal the other night (before the Mon was released), we were fantasizing about what the new ranged class could be. And I made the suggestion that it was some form of a "Weapons Master", where they were talented with using lots of weapons at once and in unison with perfect combos. So they weren't a brute force of strength (Barb), and didn't rely on being unarmed and still bulky (Monk), but did not use pure magic and summons (With Doctor and Wizard). However being a master of weapons, it could allow her (yes, I am going out right here and now, that this last class will be canon-female) the old ability of "throwing a weapon" but not in the lame and unjustified manner they did in D2.
In DIII, they should make it look graphically awesome, and something to look at, and not just some small grey line travelling across the screen that makes the enemy flinch for a second when contact is made. One skill/spell him and I thought of (a high level one, of course), would be where the Weapons Master jumps up into the air, and unleashes hundreds of small, miscellaneous weapons and they would come crashing down to the ground, piercing and slaying many enemies at once. And when she lands, you can right click again, as the second stage of the skill/spell, where each individual weapons explodes, dealing out even more damage to any of the possible survivors. Seriously, how badass would that be? it remains graphically pleasing and orgasmic, where at the sametime keeping it a ranged-based idea, and not even relying on bows! Although I still think bows will be needed. How they implement will be up to their genius.
edit:
I forgot to comment on the map! I would like to ask something, is it confirmed that the Wizard REALLY is Asian? If so, can I be linked to whatever proof there is? Also, lets say she is "asian" in skin colour and art and stuff, does that 100% guarentee she's from Xian'Sai or whatever that island is called? Also, I'd rather you not circle the Skovos Islands, because Amazon has been done already, and Amazons inhabit that palce, thus I see no possible character that could arise from there? Unless they're really unique with their background, which, I'd admit, would be rather intriguing, ne? As for Dreadlands, nothing is there. And same with the swamp lands, unless Blizz plans to create a new city there. So that leaves us with Tur Dura and Westmarch area. Ideas for lore, people?

One becomes strong when they are fighting to protect someone close to them... - Shiro Haku
I wouldn't mind a mix of a ranger type class along with a shapeshifting class like the druid.
It would be pretty cool having one skill tree having to do with ranged abilities using a bow and arrow, another tree having to do with shapeshifting skills for melee and another unknown tree maybe having to do with summoning or passive abilities of some sort. It would sorta be like the amazon of d2, being a hybrid with the melee javazon or ranged bowazon.
I thought the Skovos Isles is the area that the Amazon is from? I forget which developer said that but it was early on in development. I think it was last year I would have to go dig up the source (If I can find it).
I think we will be seeing some sort of hunter class (Yes a wow rip off) but not completely the same. I think he will have the ability to use bows/crossbows and swords/daggers. I think he will be like a druid with the ability to call upon pets. Not undead pets but bears and tigers etc.
I definitely think the last class will be a ranged unit. It just seems the most logical as most people have said. Knowing Blizzard though anything is possible really.
id really like to see a bard despite the fact that its never going to happen haha.
The Archer/beast tammer thing is really an annoying class in my opinion, i view it as an eyesore so if they do go with that i really hope they pull some very creative skills out of their horadric cubes to make up for what is a pretty dull achetype.

Again, just my opinion.
I agree completely. The sterotypical Hunter class gets boring, very quickly. It comes to the point where either your pet becomes way too overpowered or the class becomes way to easy because you let your pet tank while you sit back and fire off arrows.
I'd like the "Ranger" class to be more in tune with nature along the lines of multiple types of pets and elemental based skills, maybe a tree based solely on Ice type ranged arrow skills and another on Fire?
they said they wanted to mix western style monk with asian style monk so basically they took the "runes" more like exorcism circles, lol, and the holy atributes, from the west? (probably wrong) and the mad savage martial arts training from birth of the east and created the crazy beared dude of the desert.
people keep saying they want a darker character for the last class and at the same time they want ranged... how about a completely new diablo specific lore packed class from the dreadlands which has to do with illusion or shadow kind of magic (dont really know where im going with this) and somehow still incoperates the ranged aspect. like for example the class could use ranged and have a debuff like Gripping Shadows that would make the monsters own shadow come to like and grab its arms and legs slowing down attack and movement speeds? the class could have a skill that made its shadow abilities more powerful in dark places, ect. We dont need to secumb to the rigid concept of an archer that most people seem to be expressing >.>
My idea is probably pretty bad but hopefully gets some ideas flowing around
Exorcist: Specializes in killing demons. He could have a skill of sucking out demons souls and eating them, and by eating them he gets stronger.
Demonologist: Sort of like an Exorcist. But a Demonologist can tame demons and control them as pets.
Or maybe a combination of the two. Call it a...
Warlock: Can tame demons and keep them as pets, shapeshift into the monster they captured, or kill them and eat there souls to get stronger.
I was thinking, why not some kind of musketeer ?
I know most people wouldn't like to see guns in diablo 3, but I think musket could pass. Sure it looks a bit modern compared to the other classes, but eh, why not?
Otherwise, a shapeshifting class could be a viable solution.
I simply cannot see muskets / 17th century people with imperialist ideologies in Diablo. Like having a tree that specializes in discovering vitamin C to prevent scurvy.ARGH >_>
I liked some of the ideas in this thread, some kinda dark character from the Dreadlands would definitely be welcome. I reckon he / she should kinda look rogueish but not just a "petty criminal" dark, more of a "sexual predator / evil necrophile" dark. As in really evil. Not that it should be a sexual predator, that was just a metaphor.
The kind of char I have in mind has equal skill* in ranged attacks and stealth/melee skills (melee is entirely stealth-related, not similar to barb or monk at all), and has some kind of dark arts tree (but not arcane flashy spells like wizard).
*When I say equal skill, I mean potentially, depending on how you build it.
I know I'm getting really specific and they've surely planned the 5th character already, but I'd like to see something like this. But judging by the current 4, they will make something awesome whichever way it goes.
About a shapeshifter / second summoner class... it's possible but I don't like the idea.
In conclusion: CMON JUST MAKE IT DARK
