Blizzard is trying to have very little overlap between each of its characters. I was wondering, then, what type of damage would the last class have.
So far we have:
Witch Doctor -
Spirit/Vodoo (unconfirmed if this will be a separate damage type)
Fire
Poison
Barb -
N/A (possibly magic type)
Wizard -
Arcane
Lightning
Ice
Fire (possibly a few)
Monk -
Holy
Unless they overlap some of the pre-existing types, there is not a lot of damage types left. From D2 there is still bone (which is unlikely given the WD and necro situation), shadow (possible for a darker character), nature? (sort of like the druid's but it was pretty much fire and ice). It is also unlikely that they will create another damage type and complicate things even further.
I think, to avoid overlap, the last class is going to have to be primarily melee.

True, melee means up close. I did not mean melee in that way. I meant it as a damage type or more importantly, a lack there of. I guess physical is a better word for it. More importantly, I am just wondering what other types of damage (element) could they still add to the last class.

Yeah, I'd say it's a physical damage class, most other forms of damage have already been covered.
Which further breaks down into ranged/melee physical damage, which of course, we already have the melee variant, thus leaving a ranged physical damage class to be brought in.

barb = N/A ??? no it's physical (melee)
monk = physical + holy (melee)
unknow class = what kind of damage left ? elemental melee or physical range it's the only possibilities. Don't hope a new kind of element, they are already definite.

I meant more for additional "magic" damage. Yes the barb has physical and so does the monk but then again so does the WD and the Wizard. The last class will definitely have physical damage too. I was wondering what else they could add to the last class to add to their physical damage or if they will remain purely physical like the Barb.
I still think adding wind could be a possibility. Adding another damage type does complicate things but it also helps distinguish each class. If the last class remains purely physical with no "magic" then it is not very different from the barb as far as damage type goes. I think wind + archer = awesome.

Of course the fifth class will have some sort of physical damage with his weapons but don't you think that they have to give him some sort of magic. If not to differentiate him form the other classes in D3 then at least to make him different from the Amazon from D2.

If it's a ranged class I see physical + each element same as amazon from d2 !! But plz more imagination and utility, not like +x dom. (utility like slow time but something bring new kind of gameplay).
I don't see wind as a element, it's too similar with ice. (water+wind=ice) It's how I see that... lol but nothing is definitive.
Water+Wind=Ice? I really don't see the connection there.
wind bring cold to water.... ice is not an elements in itself it's a mix from water and "something bring cold" logically it's not fire and earth so it's still air (wind).
water + wind does not equal ice. ice is simply water in its solid state.
I also do not think that they will give the last class some of each of the element, the character would not stand out from the rest. I also doubt they they will try to make it anything like the amazon. They will try to find a way to make this character stand out besides ranged (assuming it is a ranged/bow class). The class has to have some sort of "magic" attached to it.

place water on a cold surface with no wind, it will still turn into ice. Air just circulates any temperature and brings it to a median. No matter how windy it is in California, it wont cause ice to form. There is also ice underneath the surface where there is no wind. Also, fire does not cause evaporation, heat does. Heat can come from many sources including pressure which you would classify as earth. all of the elements do work together, but they are also separated for a reason. You can not discount wind just because a class has ice.

heat / fire.. you play with word... I only try to find the origin of ice with elements... water + cold... what could bring cold with basic famous elements.... cold isn't a basic element... and I don't see earth bringing cold instead of wind.
other subject...
If I analysis, ice are supposed to make physical damage... water... mmm no, cold... no, you don't suffer of cold neither of water, you suffer from the spike you have planted in your chest like a lance.
I don't want to debate how ice is formed. Ice is water. I still am wondering what type of "magic" the last class will have. There was a quote by bashiok this week about mechanical traps. Maybe the last class will have some sort of mechanical spells like traps.

Can you link the bashiol quote about mechanical traps ?
I dislike traps of assasin from d2 and rogue from titan quest... they will need to bring something new, otherwise fifth class will be boring...

Even though we have the Barb and the Monk, with the range that the casters already have, I don't see any room for any more damage types.

not all winds are cold but it's all bringing cold... I never see wind that create hot. If yes, hurry to remove the fans of your computer... go !! lol
Yes it's another shape but I explain the transformation of the shape by the wind, evaporation I will explain by fire in it...
