Well, that might be nothing, but it also could mean something.
In the bestiary in the official Diablo III site, there's a text about the Undead. Talking about skeletons there's this interesting piece:
Contrary to what I had assumed, a reanimated skeleton is actually constructed from bits and pieces of any number of different skeletons, not a single one. Their diverse composition gives them the ability to form and reform, and makes them easily summoned, permitted there is adequate raw material at hand. Still, this is not to say that a skilled necromancer could not call forth a cadre of skeletal warriors to do his bidding anywhere he chooses. He merely requires less effort to construct a skeleton army in a graveyard than in the middle of a forest.
this could either mean they'll keep him in the game, or they'll just keep him for the lore's sake cause its THE class that has most to do with the Undead.

any thoughts about it?
Im thinking its more of a NPC thing. Having 2 minion masters doesnt seem too smart (Witch doctor and Necromancer)
Necromancers are a solid point in the lore. If not at least a playable character class, I'm positive we will be seeing Necromancer NPC's in various parts of the game.
truth is that Witch-Doctor looks more like the necromancer than the Druid (even though the mongrels are living pets). Disease (same as poison) sounds more like necro and the wall of zombies...
Necromancer + Witch Doctor =
I really don't mind the lack of playable Necro in D3. Just like I didn't take offense to the lack of a playable Warrior, Sorcerer, or Rogue in D2. They're changing things up to make it versatile and fun, and I trust them.
still even if they brought all them chars. back and adding new i would think that beating the game would be so much more easy. almost impossible not to defeat. therefore the runs could be a little faster. such as d2 had chaos runs and exan. had baal. quite frankly i hope the game is large enough so that "runs" would be obsolete .. but im just going off what i have done and seen in the previous game play.(Battle.net)
I don't see why people still argue about the necro, it is simple, due to the fact that the WD has similar skill and only 5 characters will be introduced it is safe to say that there wont be a necro in DIII. The reson why you see necromancers mentioned in the game is that they are a big part of the lore, though you will not be able to play the necromancer this does not mean you will not see one as an NPC.
On a matter of personal opinion, I am very dissapointed in the introduction of the WD to replace the Necro.

Blizzard has already stated they are NOT replacing the Necromancer with the Witchdoctor.
Watch the videos & you'll see they seem to indicate we'll see the Necro again- probably in the Expansion.

I have seen the movies and the interviews, but you do not seem to get the point, though Blizzard does not replace the necromancer he will not be part of DIII because the WD has similar skills. Unless he appears in the expansion, as you mentioned, there is no point in having 2 classes who can summon and curse.

I believe Blizzard mentioned something about reevaluting and changing the classess. I think, they mentioned classess that seemed evil, assassins, and necromancers. Maybe we'll see the Necromancers as evil now? I mean we saw that necromancers were falling during act5, so what could another twenty years after suffering the insanity of the PrimeEvils do to them?

???
Everything you just stated (minus the similar skills) is exactly what I stated.
The Witchdoctor is not replacing the Necro, and the Necro will probably return in the expansion.
Discussion is over. Well, until Blizzard releases more info or does an interview again.

In the Mtv video interview, he implies(or you could deduce) that they have more working playable character classes than would be released with the game. Suggesting that they would cut some in favor of balance.
