for all I know it's already been talked about, but wth here goes something I came up with in about 48 seconds =)
So at first I was like 'hahaha, a white necklace named squirts necklace' but then I read the flavor text.
An unassuming chunk of stone covered with runes. The name of Kantwirt, the ancient god of thieves, is scratched onto its back.
So I'm thinking (and here's the crazy part) that Wirt found this necklace back in D1, and named himself Wirt after Kantwirt which is written on the back. Also makes sense since that little bastard charged you money just to look at his stuff =P
So since the meteor has awoken like everything possible from D1 tristram, even though Wirt was dead in D2 who's to say he isn't alive in D3? Hell maybe he's all undead and is running the Realm of greed that the treasure goblins go to in their portals?
Either way I hope we see Wirt again at one point, and I'm thinking there's a tie-in somewhere in there with the realm of greed and him.
So Wirt's resurrected as Kantwirt, Asmodan's manifestation of the Deadly Sin Greed?
Y'know, it might be interesting if all of Asmodan's Lesser Evil lieutenants were enslaved to take on their designated Deadly Sin roles. Though I'd think Gheed would be a better choice for Greed.

True, wrong section. But I'll fight you on the spoiler part, since I give out zero lore from D3. It's known that Wirt is dead from D2, and well knowing about treasure goblins doesn't really spoil anything =D
But yar, just a crazy theory I had. I like Jinshin's idea about the lieutenants being resurrected NPCS and characters from D2 and D1, that would be pretty awesome =D
