I know that there were threads like this but theyre all dead now so I wanted to bring this back to life.
So far, we know that it is heaven vs hell and we apparently starts in heaven based on this:
"Diablo 3 takes place in heaven. Hell is trying to take it over and it is AWESOME looking … Imagine the brightness of heaven being taken over by the darkness of hell … Imagine WoW but in a Diablo world in amount of size and playability … Also, guild housing is available in this game for those of you who know about it."
But that's all we have so I we need to build off this and get some cool ieas off it.
Come on guys, let your imagination run wild!

"You are like a rose in a great rose field. Each rose is so beautiful to me. But if one dies... I can still look at many other roses..." God of Darkness.
We don't know if thats true yet or not though. Pretty much anything is possible.
BUT, there is something I wanted to say in relation to possible storylines, so I'll say it here:
Last year I studied Macbeth in English, talking about the narrative. Macbeth is both a tragic hero and a good vs evil thing. Macbeth is a hero that becomes a villian, but not just because he wanted to, but because he was trying to do the right thing. Thats why its tragic. (I'm pretty sure, anyway).
Focusing on the 'Tragic Hero Formula' that we were taught, I noticed that Warcraft also uses this same technique. I don't know much about the Warcraft story though, but one character that I know of for certain is The Lich King. He was a hero, who tried to save his people by taking up a powerful (but corrupted) sword. The corrupted got to him too much, and he became a nasty villian.
Also, Sylvannas Windrunner was corrupted, but not in the same way. She was forced to the dark side. So she's not reallly a 'tragic hero'.
Then there's Annakin in StarWars who tries to save Padme by using the dark side but ends up being too corrupted and becoming a villian. That makes him a tragic hero, I think.
And then there's Starcraft. The Queen of Blades got corrupted, but how? I think she's more like Windrunner, not so 'tragic hero' but more forced into it.
So, what about Diablo? Will there be any tragic heroes? There haven't been any so far. Izual did fall, but he just got overwhelmed, he didn't choose it to help save anyone like the other 'tragic heroes'. Will Tyrael choose to use the powers of the darkness to help save Sanctuary, perhaps? And be consumed by that power? He did apparently save Sanctuary by destroying the corrupted Worldstone, that could be a good way to use the Tragic Hero Formula, but, is it something that we want?
Personally, I don't want it. Or atleast, I don't want it as straight forward as that. Especially since there have already been major characters corrupted in Blizzard's other two franchises, which seems to be what both their storylines revolve around. I'd like to see them do something else, or make it much more complicated so its not so cliche.
Yeah, I think that Tyrael should stay light, I mean, It's just gay for someone to be curropted, well, not gay, but too unoriginal... Diablo 3 shouldn't be a cliche story, they should do something rarley done, and do it very well...
Here's a few ideas taken from another thread, some of them good, some bad, some might not work with the new lore put forward by the Sin War Trilogy. Some are mine, some aren't.
-with the worldstone gone demons are more free to enter the world of sanctuary, this is how more powerful demon lords (act bosses of sorts) can come through -as both demons and angels can enter the others realm, I think more demons and angels should be present at the gates to each area, they are suppose to be lock in eternal combat, yet only one angel was in hell possibly fighting demons on their own turf -the last two lesser evil Belial Lord of Lies and Azmodan Lord of Sin elude us still -the eternal battle between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells is still raging -the prime evils returning (or just diablo) without their soulstones as they arent needed for the prime evils to exist -something about Tyrael, is he corrupted? (Kinda been done before, a lot) is he banished from heaven? It may just be me but arent angels forbidden from major influences on mankind or something like that, I forget what it says in the text regards the lore of angels in diablo -Of course if tyrael is corrupted shouldn’t at least one of the seven player chars from d2 also be corrupted, they spent more time in the vicinity of the corrupted worldstone than tyrael did, and im not counting nightmare and hell, unless tyrael is corrupted thru having shards of the worldstone enter his body when he smashed it. -tie up any loose ends from the diablo series not that I can think of any right now but there is probably a few mostly to do with tyrael I believe -the angel inarius, he could perhaps be set free from his prison of mirrors to seek revenge on the prime evils or something -tie in with the diablo novels some how -something with Deckard cain is he still alive, he is getting old, but for some people it would feel like diablo without him. -some mention of the heroes of d2/d2lod, perhaps you could find part of there armor of course the set would have a name like Unknown Barbarian heroes…. or something -you could find out that cain is not the last of the horadrim, there is another, most likely an evil mage or sorts, you kill him then inform cain he once again is the last of the horadrim, cain has a wet eye. -if a playable char returns in d3 like the chars from d1 did in d2, have more of a storyline for them, not just the ‘oh xchar is now a monster I have to kill’ -several powerful demons that have been defeated in the previous games could make a return thru some kind of resurrection/summoning spell, similar to the one Baal used to bring the warlord of blood (bartuc the bloody) back to life -A civil war could break out in Hell, between Belial and Azmodan as they both vie for Ruler of Hell -If D3 is a prequel, you should be able to be involved in the Binding of the three, or the Sin War, or any other event in the diablo History, such as the Blackening of King Leoric (well maybe not that one thats a little recent compared to the Binding of the three and the Sin War) -D3 could be set a short while after the events of LOD and Hell has taken over and you must try to reclaim the World of Sanctuary and possibly Heaven.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

If Diablo 3 is a prequel I will be greatly disapointed.
If they call it Diablo 3, it should continue the story. If Blizz were to make a prequel, it should be called Diablo: The Sin War.
I like the idea that demons take over the World of Sanctuary and Heaven. It would be cool

Ohhhh thats right, I forgot about the 'tragic hero' warrior from D1. OKay, well, thats a relief, because now they probably won't do that again.
Wow, that list of ideas is good.
Also, something that is very absent from Diablo (not including the books) is 'love'. There aren't 'partners' in the games. Like, there are children, but no parents. Inarius and Lilith were the first 'couple' as far as I'm aware. They were introduced after DII LoD, so Blizzard could follow suit and have either them as a couple or someone new. I don't wanna turn it into a love story, but just something like Inarius and Lilith would be cool.
I think a diablo prequel when Cain is young would be the best thing in the world, like it's how he became a horodriam or somefin like that, just, have like a younger cain... and a younger griswold like a little kiddy griswodl
I got idea, what if like someone sympathises for diablo and like, she's a chick ofc, guys just kill him and don't care cuz we're gangsta like that... ne way, she tries to rez him and like you become her friend and then you get sent to kill her, but you don't know it's her... and you get there and you're like wtf... and then you like can't kill her cuz you lub her, and she summons diablo, and she gets owned by him... and then you have to run like a mofo, and then, you're banished from the city... and then you're all vengful and like go own everyone (not just evil people...)
Well, have you ever talked to Anya ( or maybe it was Malah) after you destroy Baal physically? She says that the prophecies never mentioned the Worldstone ever needing to be destroyed. My guess is Tyrael did that on purpose to help the minions of Hell, probably so that they would usurp whoever controls the Heavens so that he could take over or something like that.
it would be a huge twist and probably a huge disapointment to some players as well

I have an idea ,maybe a piece of the worldstone remaindand the hero who killed the prime possses by the soulstone of diablo set a meeting with tyrael about the evil may coming back and he strikes tyrael with the piece of worlstone and corrupt him P.S. is just an idea

The player character enters the portal labelled Destruction's End, before Tyrael destroys the worldstone. While there is no true way to know where the portal goes, until Blizzard come right out and gives a difinitive answer, we can be fairly certain it is away from the Worldstone Chamber as there is no evidence to suggest there is anyone else besides Tyrael present when the Worldstone gets destroyed.

Belial wouldn't send Azmodan though, they are currently at a state of civil war, fighting over the leadership of Hell. If Azmodan went to Sanctuary, it would be of his own accord, and a costly one at that, giving up the war for Sanctuary which he previously thought completey unworthy (which is why they rebelled against the Prime Evils in the first place). His followers wouldn't like him for wasting their time at a war either. I'm sure there were many casualties. Noone likes to have a war for no reason, especially if its a civil war and when the time and effort could have been better spent against Heaven, their real foe.
Diablo wasn't banished back to hell though, he was banished back to the Black Abyss that spawned him.
What orb does Azmodan destroy? The Compelling Orb? The one that our character already destroyed?
Diablo, Mephisto and Baal can easily overpower Belial. 3 Prime Evils vs 1 Lesser Evil? easy. They were only beating in the first place because they let themselves be beaten - it was part of their plan to get to sanctuary and the worldstone.
There's no 'God' in the Diablo Universe. But, there could still be some sort of powerful Heavenly sword, sure. I like this part with the sword.
But I don't like the end. NOthing is ever safe for all eternity. And Hell can't just be destroyed so easily.
Well, in the Diablo universe, that is to be expected. In every game, you act on the behalf of good by attempting to vanquish evil and restore balance.
Aye, except the only character fighting "on behalf of good" is the Paladin. The other characters are fighting for peace. If heaven was invading, (excluding the Paladin) I can most definitely the heros would be fighting them back as well.
