I love playing HC just for it's decreased reliance on the AH for most players. However, the permanent death thing keeps many people away from HC because...well that's just not something many folks want.
Yup. I'd love to play a mode that has the ethos that HC has, but I just plain dislike permanent death. I don't play enough time to keep restarting characters, and the thought of losing hard-earned gear through no fault of my own (lag spike, DC, etc) sickens me.
Diablo 2 - iron maiden ..nuff said!
I would insta DC myself as quick as I could when that shit happened in HC.
If they could ever fix the rubber banding/lag spikes and other bs issues with the service I'd probably get into hardcore in d3..but I'm not going to waste my time right now.
Ha....the 'ol Iron Maiden.
I remember helping a buddy Chaos run with my uber OMFGodly geared lvl 98 Zealot in NORMAL mode.....got insta-whacked by IM and ...well everyone had a big ol fuckin laugh at my expense.

I lost a few HC characters that way due to IM in sanctuary of Chaos and then the ones that could do it in the worldstone levels. But yeah it was funny shit, but I was happy when they finally removed it...8 years later.
wow, you guys are harsh to OP. Here's my take on his situation (because I feel similarly). It's not so much a matter of whining about how much time you spent vs $10 as it is about the side effects of the situation. I play with a group of about 8 online friends that all pay to play and the problem is they are able to spend money to advance significantly faster than I do. I'm not able to keep up with their rates of progress and so now instead of being a part of a group, I'm now a detriment to the group.
Do you guys honestly feel that the "satisfaction of finding your own equipment and making your own way in the game" is not undermined by $10 spent by someone who just started the game? I understand that the game is about the journey, not the destination, but I just find something inherently stupid about the fact that my 800 hours of my life doing boring leveling up (who wants to level a new character to 60 after like the second time) and farming for items when I could have paid $70 for this game instead of $60 and not only skipped all that, but got good gear as a bonus for starting late.
TL;DR 800 hours played, probably 200 hours *really* enjoyed. There is absolutely no way that the vast majority of the time I've spent playing couldn't have produced a better quality of life for me than $10 worth of equipment would have.
I played for about 400 hours without spending any money except for the initial 60 euros on the game itself. Time passed and i kidna stopped playing that much... Got a new job a while back and i started playing again. I saw that all of the characters are crap and i don't really have the time to farm for good drops or flip the AH so i just spent some money on gold and bought gear with it in order to be able to farm higher mp's something that seemed as fun to me and turns out i was right.
The last time i came back to D2 was 2011 and i spent some money on it. I built some crazy characters that i never could dream of having.
As others already said, people spend money on hobbies. I always use the going out or having a barbecue or something example... You can spend 100$ easily on any of those activities and no one would think that you are weird or stupid, but when you spend the same ammount on a "video-game" then you suddenly turn into a geek weirdo nerd. To hell with the haters. If i don't go out on the weekend, i don't have any problems with spending some money on the RMAH if it will instantly increase my enjoyment from the game.
For ~10$ your friend could have gotten like 300-500m gold from a 3rd party website. Quite alot of gold for starters i'd say... Hell if it bothers you that much, just spend 20$ on it and you'll pwn him xD

How is what people say harsh? Everyone plays this game for their own reasons. Everyone will also have their own consensus about if their time spent has been worthwhile or not. If he doesn't like what people state here that's fine..everyone is entitled to their own opinion and if you don't agree that's also fine.
However, with your examples of 'enjoyment' in purchasing items that's fine..some people feel the need to get the best gear they can to have fun and to compete (for lack of a better term) and then some people simply enjoy finding items to sell or items to use.
I've spent a few $ on this game, and it was to buy gems, simply because I didn't feel like having to farm like 500 ruby's to craft into the end game gems.
I won't encourage people to spend gold, nor will I tell people not to..whatever makes you happy go for it. What I will do is tell you that if you need to complain and cry about what someone else is doing in the game and how its somehow inadvertently affected your game play (as in the OPs) case, that perhaps you should take a step back and look at what truly matters. If you cannot find enjoyment in playing this game if your friend's character is better than you because he spent money, then perhaps you're playing the wrong game.
Also: If people knew in d2 and even d3 about the other community and the items, weapons, and gold that is flying around..you'd be highly depressed. D2JSP is practically the end game economy once again because Blizzard fails to structure their economy appropriately.
Do you guys honestly feel that the "satisfaction of finding your own equipment and making your own way in the game" is not undermined by $10 spent by someone who just started the game?
What you're saying is that I am crazy for not being outraged at Jaetch and that his use of the RMAH should have completely ruined my enjoyment of the game. What you're expecting me to say is "Maka, if you buy something on the RMAH then I have to quit the game because I cannot possibly enjoy it anymore" or "Bagstone, when you sold that item on the RMAH to someone you don't know it crippled my enjoyment of D3 and I think you should apologize to me."
I *might* concede that on a very broad level the RMAH could influence someone's ability to enjoy the game. But to say that your friends have destroyed your ability to play D3 and like it by spending $10 on RMAH items... that's so completey off-the-rails and sociopathic I don't even know where to begin.
Does it bother you that Barbs can farm faster than DHs? Does logging in to a DH toon make you want to hang yourself from a tree? I mean where does the blatant emo-ness end? At what point is this nothing more than a "woe is me because someone else plays the game differently from me" whinefest complete with pints of Ben & Jerrys and 15 girls all wearing their pajamas and watching The Wedding Planner for 10 hours at a time?
Your buddy spent a bit more money on his hobby. Alert CNN. This is surely groundbreaking news that will completely redefine our understanding of the world. People spend money on their hobbies. Fuckin-A.
Do you get this worked up if your neighbor decides he really likes his car but he wants a new paint job on it and sinks a couple hundred in that? Does that make you want to torch your car and walk to work? Does his extra financial commitment to the thing he likes make you unable to get in, put the key in the ignition, turn it, and drive to the grocery store without erupting in an explitive-filled tirade as if you were a Tourettes kid in a hailstorm?
I competed in D2 Zealot tournaments for years. MOST....and I mean fuckin most of my opponents had bought all their gears, including such dubious and heavily duped items as a full inv of 3/20/20 charms.
My brother competed in these back in the day, and had the same mentality as you. Props.
You should be rewarded in some sort of way for playing the game and dedicating time into it. I think most people are now paragon 100.
Its rewarding getting free stats because you earned it. Maybe more paragon levels are needed or some other sort of reward system.
Yes finding loot is rewarding but most people can now buy gold because its so cheap and end up with top end gear. The crafting system can be rewarding to an extent but like with drops its random.
"You should be rewarded in some sort of way for playing the game and dedicating time into it" Really? No I don' think so. If you need to be rewarded for playing a video game, just uninstall now. Do you really want some false rewards like the stupid fucking achievements the game has? Nerd points is about all that they amount to.
This mentality is what ruined WoW. Everyone feels their entitled to something and the game becomes watered down, bland, and boring. How about in 1.09 they log in, and you get 30 seconds to pick up as many high end legendaries as you can before the game crashes. If this sounds like I'm trolling... I am.
More paragon levels? Okay sure, what then? You hit the next paragon cap? What more levels?
Playing a video game is not supposed to be a rewarding experience. It's a game.
If you want a rewarding experience, go help the homeless.
I love the Diablo franchise, but I'm a very naive gamer. I pre-ordered D3, and woke up at 3:00 am only to be disappointed with several other thousand gamers. But have still played throughout the many up's and down's.
I have a DH Paragon 35, and a Monk at Paragon 2.
I haven't spent a dime of my money at the auction house, and my strong point isn't hawking items on the AH just sell them for more later. I do feel that I'm good at this game, if that can really be said, I love going through each skill and finding little niche fighting styles with the different builds.I didn't stay away from the AH, I used it for gold and selling items that I wouldn't use, but I never found anything extravagant. But I don't feel that my lack of economic skills at moving items should hold me back from progressing the best character that I can.
I feel that I've gotten my value from the amount of time I've put into the game, but it hit me today why I feel I won't play again. I was playing with a friend of mine who finally leveled his DH to 60, and purchased items for about $10 which made his DH SO much better than mine. Of course it might feel fake but it really took away the gaming experience that I was looking for away.
After about 350 hours into this game, I must be silly to want that time to mean something that $10 can't beat out.
Thoughts? Lyger20#1446
This sort of thing is not un-common in many of today's online games. Yea, I suppose it is pretty disappointing that all of your efforts can be dwarfed by $10, but buying your way out of a game also comes with disappointment as well.
To start, think about all the experience and "fun times" you've had with the game by playing it out for your rewards rather than buying your way to victory. Your efforts don't only reward you with good gear, but also with experience and the pleasure of being able to say that you worked your ass off for what you do have, and had a good time doing it. The guy who whipped out his wallet cannot say the same, and buying your way to victory is an easy way to get bored of a game very quickly.
Some people forget the very point of playing ARPG games like Diablo, and the point is the loot. It's like a hit of a drug once your efforts reward you with that badass gear that few can say they have obtained. You are playing the game to get better gear, not necessarily to be better than everyone else. Sure, it helps with PvP to have awesome shit, but that is kinda moot since PvP in Diablo III blows at the moment. What I'm trying to say is that your friend just payed $10 to beat the game, in a sort of way. He has nothing left to do other than display his e-dick to others via his gear and in PvP, which he will eventually find to be something that nobody is going to give a shit about.
You could argue that his buying better gear will help with going up in paragon levels, but the whole point of paragon levels in the first place was to help with magic/gold find so that you could get better gear, so it really defies the point.
You should be rewarded in some sort of way for playing the game and dedicating time into it. I think most people are now paragon 100.

We probably have a different definition of "entitlement". I'd rather say the players with a feeling of entitlement are the ones wanting the gear immediatly and buying it at the RMAH (or a 3rd party site), not the one playing for hundred of hours, hoping to earn it.
You are saying players playing hundreds of hours feel "entitled" and then that they ruin the game because they want immediate reward as soon as they log in (you'll have to explain me how playing hundreds of hours in order to get rewards and wanting rewards immediatly is the same thing), but buying the gear at the RMAH (or a third party site) as soon as a player log in is not feeling "entitled" ?
I don't blame the RMAH nor the players using it, but almost insulting someone playing hundreds of hours and wanting decent rewards, that, I blame...
Perhaps you should read through what I said slowly to get my point. No wait here I'll make it easy and break it down for you.
I said that TYPE of mentality of gratification and reward is what has ruined games. Yes WoW is included. Just because you've put X amount of time into something doesn't mean you DESERVE or have EARNED anything. This game is RNG, and as such you can play 20 hours a day and you might not find a damn thing, or you could log on for 15 minutes and get two decent items.
Nobody is 'entitled' to anything regardless of how long you play, what you spend, or what you do.
There is no difference between playing hundreds of hours and playing 5-10 hours. You're not entitled to ANYTHING. Gratification and entitlement do not belong in this game. I used WoW as a reference because people complained they couldn't get epic's like other people, that they didn't have as much time to play as other people, that the content wasn't accessible to them like other people. and so on.
I've played over 300 hours and I haven't complained, I think the best selling item I had sold for 160million gold. You take the hand your dealt and deal with it.
Actually I can compare both because your attitude and the OPs attitude are exactly the problem.
I'll reiterate once again..THE OP, MYSELF, YOU, ANYBODY ELSE are NOT ENTITLED to ANYTHING.
You can expect something all you want, it doesn't mean you're entitled to it. This game and its drops are all based on chance and luck, and yes somewhat regarding your MF level.
Your comparison is not even remotely what I'm talking about so I'm just going to stop trying to explain things to you...I'm talking about one thing and you're off in space with your comments.
Bottom line, you're not entitled to jack shit in this game, nor should you expect to get any special treatment just because you've played for x amount of hours.
I wouldn't give up. It doesn't matter who spends money and who doesn't as long as you are having fun.
